Witchy Meme!

So, astraea_sophia posted in her journal what's ostensibly supposed to be a 31-day witchy meme. I'm late to the party and prone to skipping days, so I'm going to try to do two at a time! As a note, I do have a Pagan filter where some of the more close-hold stuff is discussed in more detail-- only those who've asked to be on it are on it right now, but if you're interested, let me know and I'll consider you.

1. What’s your background with witchcraft?

Started out Wiccan... or at least Wiccan in the solitary eclectic sense. As Wiccans tend to be the most visible under the Pagan umbrella, that worked for awhile, until I realized I had some pretty solid disagreements with some of the theology. I switched to calling myself "Pagan" with no other qualifiers, and that's pretty much what I use consistently. I don't stick to a particular pantheon, though I do have affinities for specific Deities, who I try to view and work with individually inside of their own cultural contexts even though I consider myself a soft polytheist. My workings are usually of the kitchen witch variety-- I'm pretty lax about anything that constitutes a more ceremonial ritual and rarely do them. I do maybe one or two big things a year, and the rest are mostly candle spells and the like. Simple and effective. Your basic 'prayer with props' setup. I have started working with a very particular energy this past year, but that's all filtered stuff.

2. A symbol that has deep spiritual significance for you.

Candle flames. I've never really had symbols that called to me particularly, but when I think about it, whenever I'm feeling like I need an extra energy boost, I light a candle. They warm. They illuminate. They make the darkness and cold of winter more bearable. They're what I do to symbolize my intention and to begin a working or necessary change. When I begin a day's work in the studio, the first thing I do is light my altar candle to signal the creative spark. There are few things that have the effect on me that a gently flickering candle flame does. So they're symbolic to me, in that way.
