A tribute to Olivebean
Well, it's probably a liiiiittle late to call it her birthday. But it was this week last year that we first saw our little Bean, when she was just a teeny feral kitty in our ABQ backyard. Too tiny to take from her momma, even. I remember the night we captured the kittens: we decided it was TIME when we watched Olive climb a 6' terra cotta wall. She swan-dived into the tree under which her den was hidden. We pulled up the boards to get to her. Squeaky hissed and bit. Olive quietly trembled as I put my hand around her and talked to her quietly. We got them inside, and she immediately found the tiniest spot in the room to wedge herself into. We could not find her until we heard soft cries-- and her brother went over to find her. Of course, we thought she was a boy at first-- her fur bore no traces of gold. One trip to the vet, and 'Oliver' became Olive, our little Bean.

Here she is, peeking at us with her brother, Squeaky, whom we miss dearly.

After much protest, she decided that food was a good thing.

The first time she willingly curled up with me, about a week after her capture.
She was a scaredy-kitten, always following Squeaky's lead,
but she eventually figured out I was her momma.
I snuggled her up in one of my worn tee-shirts and stroked her head until she relaxed enough to sleep.

The drive home from New Mexico.
I would periodically rub them down with a towel dabbed in cool water.

Leaving Albuquerque...

During our trip to the Outer Banks, she solidified her status as a Daddy's Girl.

They have a soul-bond.

When we lost Squeaky, she became as consistently at my side as a shadow.
She also refused to drink out of anything but a glass.
She also got very mouthy...
...and learned to slay dragons.

When we got Nox to keep her company, she had to show him who's boss.

She experienced the trauma of her first bath.

When Mim came along, she became VERY protective of her parents.

She also developed an eye infection that cost us $1,200 to treat.
Neither Olive nor we were amused.
We contemplated re-naming her 'Fortune,' as in 'you are costing us a..."

Happily, all is now well in the land of Olive.
