Prague - first teaching attempt

They say that it wan't an unmitigated disaster, but I don't think I believe them. Sure as hell FELT llike it, and I still don't handle that awesomely. Fuck.

Excuse me while I attempt to wrench myself of out wallowing in abject humiliation. I was going to see if I could bum some vodka from Aaron, but he drank it all last night. ~_~ I'm thinking chocolate ice cream then vodka, since he said that he would pick up some more. ...and he's buying the ice cream next time, since he's the only one who's eaten it yet so far.

Dude, between Aaron and Stefan switching rooms, Rosalie splitting a beer with me and general basic activity, I'm really pretty much out of my funk. Now... for the ICE CREAM.

(Also, Mila (our instructor) said that the feedback from the students was actually not negative. O.o I'm baffled, but very greatful, both for their rating, and him telling me.)

Prague - First Day of Classes

First day of classes were kind of intense. It was, of course, all introductory stuff, but both teachers went about a million miles an hour. I think that all of our eyes were kind of rolling in our heads, but that we had at least a decent handle on it.

Tomorrow, we're going to do an 'on-site' teaching session (yes, on our second day), but it's not as freakishly intimidating as it sounds when they first tell you that. We're eaching going to spend about an hour with a bank employee who has pretty good English and has been taking classes from ITTP 'teachers' (trainees) for a while. This first meeting is supposed to be mainly a 'getting to know you' type thing, mainly socializing, but with a mind to let us get a handle on their grip on English, strengths, weaknesses, things that they'd like to work on, what they are/want to use English for, etc. I'm really rather nervous, but also kind of excited.

In the morning, though, we're going to observe an English lesson in a local school. Both the on-site and the in school sessions are individually. However, since three of us are going to the same school, we're planning on going there together in the morning, even though our appointments are for staggered times. It's right in Prague 1, where I haven't had much opportunity to look around yet, so I'll probably be quite happy to poke around while Rosalie (that's actually her name, and she's apparently more likely in her 50-60s) goes first and Stefan (that's how his name is spelled) goes after I do. We have a form to fill out while we are in the class, to guide our observations. Again, nervous, but kind of excited.

Since we have just met the three people in the past two days, we've been asked several times what we plan on doing after the course; stay in Prague, elsewhere... They've said point blank that basically if you pass the course, you can get a job. Then later, they talk about the fact that teaching English in Prague is rather competitive and that a single position will easily get 20 CVs coming in. I still really don't know what I want to do. I really enjoy listening to the Czech language, but I don't think that that's a terribly good reason to stay, to be perfectly honest. I do quite like the city, and still like the other members of the group (though it'd have to be a pretty dramatic second day to change that after liking them the first, wouldn't it?) and Aaron and Rosalie sound like they're seriously considering trying to stay here. Rosalie has back-up plans, but Aaron is gung-ho about staying at least a year. I think that if I'd spent the last 3 years in El Paso, I'd probably want a way to get the heck out too, though.

I think I may start to do a little mild research about opportunities in Thailand and Japan, to see what options are out there. Ugh, a month simultaneously seems like an eternity and the blink of an eye. I know that's not quite what Einstein meant with the Theory of Relativity, but meh, it works.

It is possible that Aaron has a rather exemplary prosterior. <.< But I'm not going there.
Prague-Day 3 (pt1)

Well, I was only half an hour late. But I only had half of the money, though I thought I had all of it. Turns out that the email that I was looking at only had the remaining tuition on it, not the remaining tuition AND accommodation cost, so... hell. Now I need about 13,000 more Kč by 7:00 tonight. That's about $730. And I just pulled out 10,000 Kč this morning, which was more like $860 because of the shitty conversion and commission that the banks use. I am going to be SO broke when I get back. So, so broke. Balls.

I'm presuming that when I actually start the course, it'll feel less like I'm just tossing cash out of a bus window? In case anyone is interested, there seems to be a distinct possibility that that bus is heading for that cliff up there. ~_~ Surprising to very few, I'm sure, but it is indeed quite possible to feel very alone in a big city. Oh, woe. Poor me, poor me. I'll shut up and drink my orange juice now.

I'm sitting in a KFC, since that's the only thing with WiFi around here that has stuff cheap enough I felt I could get. I feel like a 'world experiencer' or something. David Bowie was playing when I sat down, but now it's something really current American and grating. Oh look, an influx of barely pubescent boys! This will make this better, and by 'better' I mean I'm digging through my bag for earphones now.
Maybe try to get on AIM or Skype. Don't think JJ has a microphone though. It could be some fairly amusing internet charades, though.

Prague - Day 2

So, today I managed to forget that I'd put my ID and credit card in my back pocket last night (which scared a good 16 months off of my life some 8 hours after I got up and realized that I didn't know where they were), spent about 5 hours in the National Museum, found the Oxford Bookshop, got a power plug adapter, walked by (yes, by, not in) about 6 more bookstores (seriously, search "knihkupectví loc: Václavské náměstí, 110 00 Praha, Czech Republic" in Googlemaps), ate, went to a concert and managed to get back to the hostel. Woo.

So, that went (in actual, chronological order) ...

National Museum

Oxford Bookshop

adapter

bookstores

food

found ID&cc

concert

hostel

(Forgive me, but I've realized that I want to remember some of this trip in the future, which means writing stuff down due to my crappy memory, but I don't have a decent notebook, but I do have a computer. Then I recalled that despite all recent evidence, I actually do have a livejournal, so I may as well do this here. So, on I ramble.)

I got to the museum around quarter after 10. I know this because my ticket says 10:22, and I spent at least 7 minutes dithering, trying to do currency conversion in my head, trying to dig out some of my Cz koruna and dithering a little more. The ticket was 100 Kč (which is a dashed hard abbreviation to do on a regular American keyboard) for a student, or roughly, a little over $5.50. I turned up my nose at the audio guide, because it was another 150 Kč (~$8.50) and I can be pretty impressively irrational when it comes to what I'll feel too skint for and what I'll be a complete spendthrift about. (See Oxford Bookstore, later.)

As it turns out, I can spend a rather prodigiously long time in a museum, even if I don't understand the language that 80% of the placards are in. (That 20% is accounting for some of the broader subject signs that had English translations, the 'origins of the area' type exhibit, and a really cool exhibit where they all did, but more on that below.) I don't mean this in an unkind way, but I know that it'll sound that way no matter how I say it, so just know when I say it that I really enjoyed it and would drag friends through it in a heartbeat, but ...The Národní Muzeum (National Museum) isn't as large or impressive as some. I mean, I could spend DAYS in the British Museum (and may have tried), but I went though every public room in the museum in about 5 hours. At least I think I did. The audio guide is apparently the only guide, so I'm not absoluuuutely positive, but I'm pretty close. You also have to pay an extra 50 Kč ($2.80) to have permission to take pictures, which I didn't, and naturally now do regret. The audio guide I really don't regret, but I do wish that I'd been able to take pictures. Just of the BUILDING if nothing else. I mean, LOOK at this place!

(Google lies: those stairs are carpeted in red now. Really brings out the balustrades.)
But a lot of other things too. I may have to go back just to take pictures. I feel like I could stand to part with another $8.50 to support the place. ^_^

Also, I want to get pictures of all of the brass busts that they have in one room on the first (as opposed to ground) floor, which are AWESOME. They're clearly Important People to either the Czech Republic or Prague or the Muzeum, or some combination thereof, but what I love is all of the period hairstyles, facial hair, collars and ...well, faces are INTERESTING, and there's no way of getting around that. Busts are my favorite type of sculpture, I think. Well, full figures, too, but with just the head and shoulders, the artist says so much, defines the person and agh, the short version is this-> ::flail::

Then there's the ancient artifacts from Bohemia, Moravia and erm... Silesia? Slovakia? One of them, I think. They started really early and I think one of the researchers was obsessed with canabalism, because on at least three of the identifying things, it mentioned that there was 'possible evidence of cannibalism' on human bones. The first one said that there were marks, or scratches, ...oh, I wish that I could remember the actual word used, but it seems like one that occurred to them they really got behind the idea and any human bone with funky markings became 'possible cannibalism!' Or, the Paleolithic people really liked them some tasty neighbors.

That exhibit had some 'compare and contrast' artifacts from the same time period, but from other places, including a copy of Dying Gaul, which was the most striking work that we saw in my entire art history class (unless you include my striking dislike of the prof).

I mean, it took my breath away in the textbook, and when she got to the part of the class where she basically read from the text, I'd fairly often flip to that page and basically just go "LOOK AT THE PATHOS! AGH!" in my head and flail around a bit mentally. Well. This was a shitty copy. I mean, it was not protected at all, the sword tip had been worn off, one of his toes had been cracked off and the figure was just... dull. Flat. The only total let-down for me in the whole place. Clearly, I'll just need to go see the real one in the Capitoline Museums in Rome at some point in my 2 free weeks. Oh god, I'll never make it out of the city, there are so many museums. o.o

Their paleontology exhibit is pretty cool, but the highlight for me was a sub-exhibit of quite a few of Zdeněk Burian's work (the middle one on the bottom was there) and Jan Sovák's work (These aren't the best examples.) Their anthropological exhibit was in one room and would've been more interesting had I understood what the notes on the various bones were pointing out. Their zoological exhibit, though...

Their zoological exhibit was a taxidermist’s wet dream. I suppose if you get weirded out by stuffed animals (I should probably say 'animals which have been stuffed there, since it's pretty much the difference between this: and this: , huh.) Well, it doesn't creep me out, and this probably makes me a horrible person, but it was really cool! There were rooms of them! Though I have to say that the gem of the zoological collection is the full skeleton of a female fin whale, hanging between the second and third cases of mammals. The skull is about twice as long as I am! Fun thing to realize when you're standing under it, eh?

The minerals exhibit is enormous and includes meteorites and gemstones. I spent almost no time in the room with the precious gems, because who cares about peridots when there's a tiger's eye about two inches wide and NINE inches long in the next room! And there were blue stones that looked like morpho butterfly coloring, and stones a color green that I would have sworn had never been processed by the human eye until we learned how to rarefied and electrify neon, and HUGE crystals that ... well, it was fascinating.

There was also an exhibit on Prague from it's founding through several of the early rulers. It seemed to be geared mainly at younger school children and was kind of confusing. Eh.

OXFORD BOOKSHOP
After I left the Museum, I started to wander around Wenceslas Square a little, meaning I wandered down to the first street on the right and then away from the square (which incidentally, would have to try really hard to be less square, because it's basically a few blocks of a street where they let it be really wide and then stuck shops all along it. There's a Starbucks at either end, fyi.) There, I bought orange juice and then saw a sign for the Oxford Bookshop. So I went in. I bought Neil Gaiman's Fragile Things, since I finished reading Good Omens last night and wanted more. See, if I was being too stingy to get the audio guide, why did I pay 256 Kč ($14.40) for a book I probably don't really need? Because, well... Neil Gaiman is like literary comfort food, even if I've not read the story before. So there, self.

Oh god, think I just tweeted that AT N.Gaiman instead of mentioning him in the tweet. I meant his books are literary comfort food, not to tweet at him. ...Nor that he's food. O.o Hm. Well, in any case, I read the introduction, asked if she knew where I might be able to find an adapter plug and then left the book on the counter. Because I'm awesome like that.

Then I followed directions and the map and got an ADAPTER! And then walked by a bajillion BOOKSTORES, one of which also had old maps. Man. I spent 10 minutes outside ogling, but managed not to go inside. Then I went back to the Museum to buy a ticket for the concert that somebody'd handed me a flier for earlier:
400 Kč is $22.50. This? Totally worth it. I got the ticket about 4:20, went back out to the square, wandered around a little to see if anywhere might have WiFi, walking into the Starbucks at the top of the square, walked back out after roughly 20 seconds and then remembered I had a sandwich in my pocket from the plane yesterday. Sat down on a bench, had my sandwich with my orange juice from its litre carton (I am class personified, but if you want the full picture, you must know that I was wearing my ASC sweatshirt under my Nepal coat, so the black hoodie poked out, and I was wearing a brown beanie, had my blue gloves shoved under my legs to keep them warm while I ate and my huge brown backpack was propped up on my shoulder. CLAAAAAAASS, baby.) Checked the time again... by turning on my camera and checking the clock on it, since I haven't a watch and am waiting for a recommendation from the training place before I get a phone. With 45 minutes to go, I shuffled into an outside corridor thing off the square and read more Fragile Things. When I sat down that time, I noticed something in my back pocket, and lo and behold, there were my drivers’ license and credit card. Oy vey. After a few of the stories, it was time to go to the concert!

CONCERT
Take a look back up there at the picture of the interior of the Museum. Now think about acoustics. Now drool a little. Yeah. It was a string quintet with a piano. I might go to the other two concerts too. >.> They had the piano, music stands and chair for the cellist set up on that huge landing between the upper and lower staircases. There were about six chairs on either side of that landing for audience, and then cushions laid out on the stairs for the rest of us. There were probably 30 or so people there, and it was gorgeous. If I go to either of the other ones, I'm going to stick my bag somewhere and dress a little nicer, because I felt like SUCH a hobo with my get up and my bag leaning against my leg on the stairs.

It was obvious that the group enjoys playing with each other, because they'd get to certain phrases in different pieces and they'd catch each other's eyes and start grinning. Really, really wonderful. Oh man, the acoustics.

When it ended, I managed to figure out how to get back to the hostel and only missed on bus stop reading. I am VERY glad that I stopped to ask directions when I got off the bus here yesterday, because a very kind fellow in an auto repair shop printed me off a little map of just these few blocks. Without it, it would've taken me about three times as long to find the hostel again. Not that it's really all that difficult, but it's a few blocks away and my sense of direction is infamous for a reason. And now I've been re-capping for about two hours, and I should be asleep, but I need to pull up directions to my 'give us the rest of the money' meeting with the program people, look up how much I need to give them, figure out how many Kč that is and where to get it before the meeting... and how to make sure that I wake up in time to get to the meeting. It's quarter to one here. Oh well. Tomorrow is another day... except that it's today for you guys. Heh.

I will say straight up, I haven't check my flist in ages, but I wanted to update something.

I had a fabulous Christmas, complete with quite a bit of travel. Up to Annapolis, MD on Christmas Eve, left 7am on the 26th for Augusta, GA and got back to Staunton today at 7:15 or so. Got to see 7 out of 7 cousins up in MD, and only 2 of 17 in GA. However, I did get to spend time with my uncle down in GA, which I must admit was the most important thing to me down there.

Now Mateo and Alyaa are visiting and we've had a fabulous 5 hour visit so far. She's lovely and charming I'm glad to have her in my extended quasi-family. ^_^

I'd love to do a longer post, but it's waxing on 1am and I'm starting to yawn.

Anyhoo, I'm back in town, and after tomorrow, I expect I'll be helping McCrazy for a few days, until the 2nd, though I've been claimed for New Years Eve. Call if you want to get in touch with me, or text.

PUMPKIN!

I spent five and a half hours carving my pumpkin. It needs a better camera than my webcam to do it justice, but look: pictures!

 The glare is lame. But the pumpkin is not!

 Again, crappy pic. And I didn't carve it backwards. (For those of you who can't tell from the previous picture, this one says "Coraline."

Well, here: my reference pictures.

I'm quite proud.

Yay movies.

My favorite line from any of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies is actually from the bloopers of the first one. I just found out that it is actually homage to Benny and Joon.

I just watched Benny and Joon for the first time. I love this movie. Lots.
Browzing Netflix instant view. Found this:

"Play Preview Jen (puppeteered by Jim Henson), the last of the Gelfling race, is charged with healing the Crystal of Truth -- now called the Dark Crystal after it was cracked, leading to an era of terror -- by finding a missing shard in Aughra's (Frank Oz) observatory. The wicked Skeksis will rule eternally if Jen doesn't complete his mission before the Great Conjunction of the three suns. Henson and Oz co-direct this classic fantasy film. "
Hellooooooo next film I'm watching.

MLIA of the day

Today while I was at work I was checking cake orders. (I work at a bakery) One of the cakes was decorated red and blue, with a black web on top, with a Spiderman toy on top. The writing said "Happy Birthday Grandpa Gordon" I hope I get cool birthday cakes like that when I'm old. MLIA.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Next year? I'm totally expecting a Batman cake. Or giant cookie. o.o
PR mid-term = whole lotta BSing. Oh yeah. I've never done particularly well in Dorries' classes. Never fear Ba-ru-ah: nothing against him as a person, or a teacher. I just don't. And I fear that I'm not particularly interested in the classes. This one is a major requirement.
I have a whole buttload of stuff to do. I know that that is welcome to college/welcome to LIFE, but still. Blegh. The monster mid-term of I-so-don't-care!doom was actually one of the smaller things. Yuy!
Once again, I feel like crying aloud, "I CAN'T WAIT FOR COLLEGE TO BE OVER SO THAT I CAN ACTUALLY GO LEARN THINGS!" Things other than the 'you will always have a butt-ton of stuff to do' and 'no, the schedule doesn't really get better if you want to be able to pay rent' kinds of things. 'Cuz I am getting those now.
ALSO! (and part of the business) It's looking like I'll be able to do both Carmina Burana AND Pirates! I'll just be missing the Pirates performance on the 15th (Sunday matinee at 2pm) to go perform in Waynesboro at 3pm. Please think about this if you're planning on coming to see the show(s). Because I expect you all to come. ALL OF YOU. ...wait, why am I promoting something that I'm going to be freaking out with stage fright about? ...I'm not sure. But only having been to two rehearsals for Pirates, I can ALREADY tell you it's going to be GRADE-A FUNNY STUFF! Woo! I'll just be hiding under a tarp or something. Way to misdirect any readers with your ever so clever wit.
Oh, I totally forgot that I should maybe tell the flist that I got cast in Pirates. ^_^ Chorus. Cool! Soprano. Wait, no really? Um. Ok. I have to check to make sure of my schedule, but I really actually do want to do it. ^_^
The reason I totally forgot about this news? The first MBC play. Unnecessary Farce. It is fantastic and awesome and hilarious and I almost tipped my chair over laughing. Twice. I actually found that I'm a little hoarse now from all the laughing I did. Go see this. No seriously. Go see this. It's at MBC, in Deming Hall at 7:30 on Friday and Saturday and then at 2:00 on Sunday. Tickets are $5 for students and seniors, and I think $10 for adulty people. SO EFFING WORTH IT.
If all my flailing doesn't convince you, I have just two words for you: SCOTTISH MAFIA. If that doesn't convince you... you can probably go ahead and take me off your flist. Because I'm not sure I want to know you. BECAUSE IT IS AWESOME!!!
Holy Jebus, it makes me stupidly happy. Oh, yes. It does.
concert
My mom found out about a concert series here in town which is pretty fantastic. For six concerts, a regular adult can get a season ticket for $50 and a student for only $10. Needless to say, we got tickets. Tonight was the first concert for this year, and it was the Presidio Brass.
They're actually quite marvelous. I realize that it sounds incredibly condisending to have the 'actually' in there, but it's Staunton so I didn't know how good the groups that they could draw would be. They're good. They're also fun. They are goofballs, which made the evening even more enjoyable. Their regular horn player wasn't there because his father passed on last night, but they flew out a classmate of one of their trumpet players and for such short notice, she was fantastic. Scratch that, she was fantastic, period. She used a stand, where everyone else had it memorized, but the fact that she was able to flawlessly hold up a demanding part in a two-hour concert with maybe two days notice? Damn. And this isn't stuff that would be familliar to horn players, these are pieces that more often than not were arranged for brass quintets.
I bought one of their CDs. Check out the excerpts in this list:
"Sounds of the Cinema" - TRACKS
01 Star Wars Main Theme
02 Night On Bald Mountain
03 Sorcerer's Apprentice
04 Adagio
05 Raiders March
06 Bohemian Rhapsody
07 Music From The Incredibles
08 Highlights From Jurassic Park
09 Danny Boy
10 James Bond Theme
11 Jabba The Hutt
12 Pirates Of The Caribbean
Especially Bohemian Rhapsody! It's GORGEOUS.
I've just discovered MLIA (MyLifeIsAverage)
"Today, I was going through customs, and a very scary official decided to search my bag. When he found my teddy bear, he proceeded to amuse himself by making it growl and attack me. I am now much less intimidated by customs officials. MLIA."
"Today, I was at a four way stop sign and another car got there at the same time as me. I waved for him to go, then he waved for me to go. We both sat there for a few seconds and then put our hands out the window to rock-paper-scissors for it. I won. MLIA"
"Today, I was babysitting a three-year-old. While we were eating ice cream, I told her she was very mature. She asked what it meant, and I told her it means she acts older than she is. She told me not to speak with my mouth full. MLIA "
"Today my brother baked cookies. He put them on the counter to cool and then accidentally fell asleep while waiting. My whole family ate them all while he was asleep and then we convinced him he dreamt baking the cookies. He believed us. MLIA"
"Today I found a crayon called "Your Grandma's Fake Plastic Plant". I know what my new favorite color is. MLIA " [[Also, can I have that job? I really want the job of naming crayons. Like, A LOT.]]
"Today, my friend told me he had to go reverse puke. I was disgusted until I realized that that would just be eating. MLIA"
"Today, I met a cardiologist named Lauri Pepper. I just now realized that her title would be Dr. Pepper. It made my week. MLIA"
"Today, I drove around with my windows down blasting the Harry Potter theme song. Throughout the time it took to drive from work to my house I got 6 thumbs up, caused 3 people to wave around fake conductor's batons, and received innumerable nods and smiles. This is going to become a daily thing. MLIA."
"Today was the first day of the school year. In three out of four classes, we went over class rules and safety regulations. In chemistry, we lit a gummy bear on fire. I know who the fun teacher is. MLIA"
[[I'm pretty sure that this is my new favorite site. WIN.]]
Oh god, I remember some of the reasons that I wasn't looking forward to school starting again. One of them is the fact that I am awake right now.
7:23 = yell at the cats for waking me up at an unholy hour
7:25 = yell at my alarm for going off when I set it to go off
7:26 = check email, facebook, lj
7:33 = get out of bed and switch laundry to dryer
7:42 = not be able to get on the online registrar because I never got the new PIN they supposedly mailed
7:42 - 7:50 = play with cats (Demetrius can waddle quite fast)
7:50 = unearth backpack bag thing
7:51 - 8:07 = attempt to figure out what classes I actually registered for
8:07 = fail
8:08 = be grumpy
8:11 = tell lj about it
Thaaaaaaaaat's my day so far. I'm super excited. ~_~ I guess I might actually be a little bit, if I weren't so tired/grumpy/hungry. Maybe I should try this 'breakfast' concept...
