My life, it is kind of crazy right now. There's work, and there's being wiped from work. There's the fact that I'm sick and feeling yucky and tired. There's additional work I'm doing because teachers' salaries are crap. This, to sum up, is why I barely post here, and also why I've done a major friends cut. I just don't have the time to keep up with as many people as I used to. I also cut out a whole big bunch of communities.

The sad thing is that even after the cut, I ended up getting to skip=120 since I just didn't have the energy to go online in a few days, other than mandatory email checking (which is good, because our principal sent out an email this morning that his new daughter was born yesterday).

Finally, I am sorry for not making this post sooner, but I needed smarter people than me (aka scatterheart) to explain to me how to make a post public, since LJ wasn't cooperating.

I love you bunches, but for the most part if I've removed you it means we didn't have that much direct interaction, and most likely we were just still on each other's flists since the merry old QAF days, and out interests have varied.

1. The past few weeks were so tiring I spent most of the weekend asleep. I woke up at 11 on Friday, went out to breakfast, then took a nap when I got back home. After dinner, I fell asleep in front of the TV. Yesterday I think I was awake for maybe 8 hours. This would be more fun if I didn't have a paper to write, and if I wasn't feeling so crappy when awake (I have a cold and yesterday I also had a splitting headache).

2. I didn't post about it, but after a tough time my beloved basketball team crushed the Russian Kazan 106-67. There's a home game tonight, on Tuesday, and on Saturday. I'm very excited, and I'm hoping the new energy level sticks.

3. Everyone in my office is out to lunch, and they left the radio on with some guy yelling about something. It is very annoying. I am waiting to have lunch with someone who is stuck in a meeting.

4. Starting tomorrow we are all obligated to fill in some time allocation test for the American government (you were probably forced to do that if you every worked in an American non profit). For an entire week, I will have to account for all my office time in 15 minute increments. I wonder how I should classify LJ and Facebook? Probably both fall under Management & Administration (as do all types of breaks).

5. There were two earthquakes in the past week. I slept through Friday's one (see no. 1), but the one on Tuesday was while I was at work, and in our 4th floor office it was very noticeable. Although at first it felt like someone was kicking my chair, the falling paperwork soon proved otherwise.

6. It's COLD out. I know the Israeli version of cold is different than in other places, but since the tenants association has yet to turn the heating on properly, it is definitely cold in anyone's standards indoors.

7. Apparently my feet has high arches. In fact, according to the specialist guy, they're high among the high arches. Plaster models of my feet are on their way to California as we speak to create corrective insoles for this. Also, apparently a low heel is much preferable to a very flat shoe for me.

In 2006 a new edition of Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman's Good Omens came out with an introduction by the authors and an essay in the end. For a paper for school, I need both. Very badly.

As most of you have noticed, since I started my new job in September, my online time has been greatly reduced. I've decided to cut down my friends list massively (from 160 to 100), because I honestly can't keep up with all those people. In fact, I've been reading a smaller, filtered list for a while now, because it just wasn't possible to read everyone. I hope I haven't hurt anyone's feelings, and I'm screening comments so that you can tell me anything you feel like in response.

Ha'aretz (the daily paper we subscribe to) is organizing donations through the UJC, and The Hebrew University, which is the university I go to, has announced that anyone who's academic studies have been disrupted due to the storm, can come here for a semester.

On last night's Daily Show, Bernard Goldberg, author of 100 People Who Are Ruining America, suggested that culture becoming more crass is important. Jon Stewart objected, saying that people saying "fuck", and other expletives, is "just words". Goldberg disagrees. He believes it's more than that. If, for example, there was a "bigot channel", which would refer to Jews as kykes, to gay as fagots, and to African Americans as "you know" (I wonder, are his other examples less offensive, or is he just more comfortable offending some groups over others?), liberals wouldn't be as accepting.

But there is a difference. A big one. Some words are just words, some are not. And if anything, recent events here in Jerusalem are an example of it.

Who gets hurt when you or I say "fuck"? I don't mean who gets offended, I mean who gets hurt. Probably no one. The use of that word does not promote or even suggest any action against anyone. When you call gay people "fagots", on the other hand, something can happen. If, for example, you say gay people are an abomination and bring shame to the city, and you say so repeatedly, and you say the gay inhabitants of the city should be thrown "down the stairs", like our mayor has said, someone might (and did) show up at the Pride parade with a knife, and try to kill people. And this is the major difference.

I am sick and tired of people treating all bad language as "bad". Not everything is the same. The words "cock" and "fuck" were bleeped out in last night's broadcast. The words "kyke" and "fagot" were not. Neither was a speculative rap quote stating all women are "bitches and hos", which again, can do a lot more damage than Jon Stewart saying the word "shit", which was bleeped out.

Yes, there is a culture war. Not just in America, but around the world. And in it words are important. Because some people believe harmless words relating mostly to sex are too offensive to be used, and that there lies the important battle, where as truly offensive, hurtful, dangerous content is left alone.

P.S.
Yes, Jon Stewart was a little meaner than necessary. But people like Goldberg are the ones who are truly dangerous, by diverting the discussion from the critical to the inconsequential, and therefore I don't really care.

Edit: He also mentions "spicks", which I totally forgot.
Edit #2: I have looked this up (on the Racial Slur Database), and the correct spellings are as follows: kike, spic, and either fagot or faggot, although semagic prefers the former.

Pardon the Hebrew, but this announcement is only relevant for those in Israel anyway

The ubiquitous Simon Dumenco (isn't he still running the show at Colors or something?) will get a few bucks per word authoring a weekly column on media something or other. Well, whenever he gets around to opening his laptop in between redecorating with boyfriend (and newly jobless) Queer As Folk's professional gimpy bottom Randy Harrington (or has someone been cheating?).

The official press release is here, but includes no mention of QAF or Randy.

Edit: So they noticed their typo. Oh well. I thought it was funnier the other way...

Holiness and WorldPride

This coming August, thousands of people from around the globe will convene in Jerusalem to march under a banner of respect for human dignity, liberty and tolerance for diversity, in "WorldPride Jerusalem 2005," a series of events sponsored by the Open House, the city's gay and lesbian center.

Recently it has been argued by an unholy coalition of American fundamentalist Christians and Jewish Israeli right-wing clergy and politicians that an event in which gays, lesbians and supporters champion these values publicly is somehow incongruent with the sanctity of the Holy City. Nothing could be further from the truth.
