Salute to Firefly & Serenity, Burbank 08

(MY) PROGRAM

1100: registration & went around the foyer looking at stuff. Also, lunch.

1340: RON GLASS. Had a nice question and answer session. He told a story about Joss calling him about Serenity and telling him that it was a good news-bad news phone call. Good news: they agreed to Serenity. Bad news: you died. Ron nearly did not join the cast for Serenity but Nathan and Joss eventually convinced him. He was much much happier with the revised version of how he died. We also learned that there's gonna be a comic that might explain Shepherd's past and that when Firefly ended, he got the ripped Bible from the set.

1430: Firefly Fan Film, Bellflower. Saw a bit. It was a nice set with pretty cool special effects but we left halfway through the sets walk-through. Then we skipped a whole bunch of stuff while I go study and my sis slept in the car.

1700: Came in just in time to catch the tail end of the Auction. With prices for autographed posters and banners going for as high as $450.

1720: JEWEL STAITE. The highlight of the day. She's just so preciously sweet and refreshingly honest that it's a joy. She told a story about how Nathan kept coming up with increasingly creative ways to give her the finger (magic trick, close her eyes, jewellery box; she retaliated by making Nathan think that he has a creepy stalker during Valentine's) and how she finally won at DragonCon (the whole audience gave Nathan the finger).

Also told a story on how she really really hated that pink dress that they had from the Firefly set. Oh! and that she got Kaylee's door sign while Nathan took everything else (from the Firefly and Serenity sets), the giant Firefly fan that he is. Apparently, he'll throw parties and have Firefly running on mute on the background. Jewel was wondering whether Nathan was playing Firefly games with the props that he had...

Nathan also loves to sing - he used to organize karaoke nights. Gina is classically trained as a singer and Gina can sing as well. Alan Tudyk, of course, since he went on Broadway.

And of course, no story is ever complete without Captain Tightpants' pants ripping from the pilot. =D Oh also, her favorite shoe brand is Steve Madden.

Telling stories about her experience with the SGA crew, apparently there's much less pranking going on but there's periods where David, Joe, and her will make funny noises and just laugh hysterically. David also made up some lines regarding Atlantis: The Musical and having the wraith sing or something like that. Jewel and David will also, for some unexplainable reason, call each other BingBing on set.

Note: Jewel also stated that Nathan will sometimes give out Firefly/Serenity props to people who ask really good questions at conventions. =P

Creation Entertainment Official Firefly Convention, Burbank 08

ETA: Added more stories from the convention, with more details.

Like middle-class income. Any job where they give me free stuff to test out is a great job for me.

Unfortunately, I think this idea is shifting. I wouldn't want to be a passive consumer forever. If I were to consume it so vicariously, I wanna be able to make it. So what's keeping me from it then?

My own confusion on what I want. My doubts that I'm good enough for it. If I'm doing something I love, I wanna be good at it or I think my heart would just break.

I didn't really notice in SGA because of the hair and the glasses and the fact that Joe Flanigan is pretty much the pretty boy in the set but David Nykl is seriously hot.
I'm taking a break from the World Cup furor and as you might imagine, I've spent the whole day reading fanfics. Mostly POTC Norrington Slash but there's a few Percy/Oliver as well. Delightfully, I came across this slashy Wonka fic...

Title: Abracadabra by lyricality
Pairing: Adult!Charlie/Wonka
Summary: Eight years after that fateful day, Charlie finally learns how to get what he wants.

lyricality does excellent work in taking two difficult, and mostly two-dimensional, characters and infusing life into them. Charlie here is not the goody-two-shoes boy that most of us are familiar with. Oh, he still retains that boyish charm but he undeniably moodier and prone to bouts of temper such as you and I. Wonka, on the other hand, is deliberately painted as mysterious and we don't see much of him in the fic. Nevertheless, lyricality's Wonka is someone that I could definitely believe in. lyricality had also managed to give us a glimpse on the day-to-day technicalities in the factory; both men's creative genius that had kept the factory going for so long. I liked how the progression of their relationship seemed natural. I liked the way the author managed to inject a whimsical air into the fic. Overall, the fic is a bit briefer than I would have liked but she did a great job in just three chapters.

READ IT

OHMYGOD!!! UPSET FOR BRAZIL. Whoever thought that the favourite would be out against France in this match. *I* certainly didn't foresee this. I'm going out there to celebrate as soon as I type this up. OH MY GOD!!!!!

I love France. Of the teams that I've watched so far, France gives the impression of being elegant. They play clean and well. It's a joy to watch them. It's definitely highly in contrast with Germany vs Argentina. Lots of shoving there and it was an ugly scene after the game...

The referee was awful in this match though. He seemed to be inconsistent about calling fouls and yellow cards. Some didn't get called and the last yellow to France was just ridiculous. He didn't even touch him!!!

FRANCE WON!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you Zidane.

...and of course, Henry. England is especially remarkable since they've lost Beckham and Rooney (that was a stupid thing he did) early on in the match.

Germany v Argentina

Yesterday's match was a massive disappointment for me. I can't believe that Argentina lost in a Penalty Shoot Out of all things. Grrrrr!!! It was a rough game with both teams shoving and accumulating fouls but I like the referee (Michel). He did a great job.

One of the most memorable moments in the World Cup, IMO, is when Ayala scored that goal for Argentina and immediately went to congratulate his teammate for that great kick...

It gives me warm fuzzies...

Next match...BRAZIL vs FRANCE.

I'm rooting for France although they won't probably win.
It's been raining non-stop today.

I went to accompany a friend to the bank at about 3.30p and had dinner at California Pizza Kitchen. It was freezing when we finished and made our way to the bus stop. My school bag was soaked but fortunately the pen I used to write all my notes is waterproof, so I didn't need to recopy them or anything. Had to wait fifteen minutes in the rain with the wind buffeting from all directions. My hands were numb when the bus finally came. It was wonderfully warm in the bus but our shoes were soaked through. At least we're not freezing anymore.

Just came home, had a hot bath and tea. Mmmm...it was pretty fun actually.

-sevter-

Fanfiction.net is now known as the Pit O' Hell and seasoned readers would sooner spork their own eyeballs out than trawl through the trash that could be found in the site. Based on events from Spider-Man 2.

Additional info: G, General, very brief mention of Peter/Mary Jane, Completed.

Told from the point of view of one of the passengers in the train, Maggie O'Reilly, the fic has excellent characterisation of Peter Parker. I am in awe. There's only two settings in the fic and we don't really get to see the second one till the last chapter or so. Nevertheless, katheryne managed to make it so that there is a wealth of knowledge to be gained. Lovely, lovely characterisation (if a tad cliched). Not so much about plot than it is about relationships and character. Read it.

I have a horrible suspicion that I'm missing rather a lot when I skipped Harry/Draco fics. The problem is just that the moment Snape or Percy walks out of the scene (certain fics not withstanding, like Draco Malfoy The Amazing Bouncing Rat), the fic becomes a whole less interesting lately. I'm bookmarking The Shadow of His Wings though. Looks promising.

I'm moving to Los Angeles in August. Now's 29 July and I haven't even packed yet!!! Other than my clothes, I have no idea what to pack...let me see I have to pack my backpack, school stuff, laptop, Judo gi. Unfortunately, I'm travelling by commercial aircraft which means that there's a limit on which I can bring my stuff there. That also means that my books and manga would have to be left behind!!!! Waaaaaaa!!!!!!

My mum probably won't let me send my stuff by cargo to LA anyway and I'm not staying long at the apartment that I'm going to rent. A year at the most before I go into University, which means I have to move again. Taking too much stuff would be inconvenient. Still, it doesn't mean I have to like it. I'll feel abandoned without my books and manga. I'll see whether I can at least sneak in HBP, if not my full HP collection...

    <lj:music>Double Trouble</lj:music>

I picked up my copy only at around 12pm on Saturday. They released it on 7.01am. Read it till 6pm before going on the net for a bit and sleeping. Resumed reading at around 9am on Sunday till about 12pm.

Snape
I swear this is fodder for Evil!Snape theory. Like many in the fandom though, I believe that Severus had decided to kill Dumbledore at Dumbledore's behest before he even made The Unbreakable Vow to Narcissa. And that Dumbledore was pleading for Sev to kill him instead of saving him. It's also nice to see Severus acting as a spy at the start of the book. We can fully appreciate his skill more that way.

The relevation of Severus as the Half Blood Prince wasn't as surprising as it was too, since I had my suspicion since Harry got that "Advanced Potion Making" text. I mean, who else do you know that was so skilled in potions? Plus there's the fact that Severus is just a tad too knowing, too smug for his own good. I was dissappointed to know that Sev didn't invent the Wolfsbane Potion though, it was a nice pet theory...

Narcissa
Narcissa is very interesting. We see her not as "The Ice Queen" but as a worried mother. It gives the villains more substance

Draco
This is stuff for dreams for Redeemed!Draco fans. Personally, the fact that Draco can't manage to bring himself to kill Dumbledore means that he can in fact, be redeemed. Of course, this could also be because he's too afraid of Dumbledore to kill him w/o back up but nah, don't think so. Even when some of the DE came he also can't bring himself to raise his wand, Severus had to do it for him. Still, it strengthens Severus' position within DE so I guess I can't complain.

Dumbledore
We definitely see a lot of Manipulative!Dumbledore here and he's stricter too. In fact, I think that Movie!Dumbledore really do reflect this Dumbledore after they changed actors. He used guilt on Harry to persuade Slughorn to return to his old position and to convince him to part with the memory...

Fleur --- Fleur's okay, we see a bit more on her here and that she doesn't really care for appearance that much

Tonks/Remus --- I didn't like the new Tonks or this pairing. We didn't see much on Lupin and her anyway, just bits.

The Staff/The Order --- It's a bit dissappointing to note that no one really put their trust on Severus except for Albus. I'm convinced that he made the Unbreakable Vow to Albus though, that's why he was trusted so much...

I'm thinking of picking up the Deluxe Edition of HBP (Half-Blood Prince) which cost slightly more than the normal copies...but it has a wonderful illustration with it and they're printing only 100,000 copies. The thing is...I'm not even sure whether I want to buy the book, though it seems silly to not buy it now that I've had almost the complete collection of the books. And anyway, I need to read the book for the fandom anyway, to understand some of the plot, to check canon facts and stuff.

I'm slightly jealous of Rowling now that she's rich, and her writing nowadays are kinda dissappointing, especially after PoA. GoF was okay I guess but I can't really stand Ootp. No offence meant. I should probably wait till the price dips a little but I think all the excitement had gotten into me...I can't wait to get my hands on a copy now.

I can't wait to see the explosion of discussion the fandom's gonna see after HBP is released tomorrow. Damn, the atmosphere is really getting into me...
