<description>Hailed by The Guardian as “a cellist of power and grace” who possesses “mature artistry and willingness to go to the brink,” three-time GRAMMY®-nominated cellist Seth Parker Woods has established his reputation as a versatile artist and innovator across multiple genres. Woods’ projects delve deep into our cultural fabric, reimagining traditional works and commissioning new ones to propel classical music into the future. As The New York Times wrote, “Woods is an artist rooted in classical music, but whose cello is a vehicle that takes him, and his concertgoers, on wide-ranging journeys.”

Following a notable 2024/25 season that included his debuts with both the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestras, Woods enters the 2025/26 season with several high-profile engagements. He joins longtime musical partner Hilary Hahn in the world premiere performances of Carlos Simon’s double concerto, appearing with the National Symphony under Gianandrea Noseda and with the St. Louis Symphony under Stéphane Denève. He also makes his solo debut at London’s Barbican Centre, returns to Brazil for the South American premiere of Nathalie Joachim’s cello concerto Had To Be with the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra, and performs with Ensemble Resonanz in his debut at Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, featuring works by Jessie Montgomery, Chinary Ung, and Julius Eastman.

In January 2026, Woods premieres a new trio formation with soprano Julia Bullock and pianist Conor Hanick on a national tour that includes a world premiere by composer Tania León, with appearances at CAP UCLA, 92Y, Virginia Tech, Eastman School of Music and the University of Chicago.

A prominent champion of contemporary composers, Woods has premiered numerous concertos written specifically for him. These include Tyshawn Sorey’s For Roscoe Mitchell with the Seattle Symphony; Nathalie Joachim’s Had To Be at Spoleto Festival USA and with the New York Philharmonic, Orchestre Métropolitain (Montreal), and Chautauqua Symphony; Julia Adolphe’s Chrysalis with the Los Angeles Philharmonic; and the American premiere of Rebecca Saunders’s Ire with the Seattle Symphony.

His GRAMMY®-nominated, autobiographical tour-de-force Difficult Grace has been performed to critical acclaim at 92NY, the Harris Theater in Chicago, CAP UCLA, the San Diego Symphony, and the University of Pennsylvania. As a recitalist and chamber musician, Woods has appeared at Carnegie Hall, the Library of Congress, the Kennedy Center, Konzerthaus Dortmund, and Harvard University, among many others. He has curated and performed in tributes to the music of Julius Eastman at Lincoln Center and to the chamber music of George Walker at The Phillips Collection.

Woods’s discography includes the GRAMMY-nominated Difficult Grace (Cedille Records, 2023); music by Anna Thorvaldsdottir with Claire Chase (New Focus); and multiple recordings as part of Wild Up’s Eastman Project, including the GRAMMY-nominated Eastman Vol. 4: The Holy Presence, which features Woods as soloist in Eastman’s The Holy Presence of Joan of Arc. His next solo recording, From Ordinary Things, will be released by Platoon in March 2026.

Since 2022, Woods has served on the faculty of the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California and was appointed the Robert Mann Chair in Strings and Chamber Music in 2024. He has also taught at the Music Academy of the West and the Ilumina Festival in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He holds degrees from Brooklyn College and the Musik-Akademie der Stadt Basel, as well as a PhD from the University of Huddersfield. He has served as Artist in Residence with the Kaufman Music Center and the Seattle Symphony, was honored at the Seattle Symphony’s 25th Anniversary Silver Gala in 2023 and received the 2022 Chamber Music America Michael Jaffee Visionary Award.

Woods is also recognized for his distinctive personal style, having appeared on Best Dressed lists in Vanity Fair, Variety, Texas Monthly, and the OC Register.

DIFFICULT GRACEAn evocative, theatrical, and genre-bending collaboration with choreographer/dancer Roderick George, Difficult Grace is a multimedia concert tour de force conceived by and featuring Woods in the triple role of cellist, narrator/guide, and movement artist, performing music written for and with Seth by Freida Abtan, Monty Adkins, Fredrick Gifford, Ted Hearne, Devonté Hynes a.k.a Blood Orange, Nathalie Joachim and Pierre Alexandre Tremblay.

Heightened by film, spoken text, dance and visual artwork by Jacob Lawrence, Barbara Earl Thomas, Zoë McLean, and Freida Abtan, Difficult Grace is a semi-autobiographical exploration of identity, past/present histories and personal growth that draws inspiration from the Great Migration, the historic newspaper The Chicago Defender, immigration, and the poetry of Kemi Alabi and Dudley Randall.

Commissioned for Seth Parker Woods by the 92nd Street Y with the generous support of Elizabeth and Justus Schlichting. Co-commissioned by the Harris Theater, UCLA’s Center for the Art of Performance, and The Hopkins Center for the Arts at Dartmouth.

The world premiere of Difficult Grace&#38;nbsp;was presented by the Seattle Symphony at Octave 9: Raisbeck Music Center at Benaroya Hall in February 2020.“Seth Parker Woods’s audiovisually mouthwatering performance”&#38;nbsp;— CHICAGO TRIBUNE

ICED BODIES: Ice Music for ChicagoSeth Parker Woods and Spencer TopelTopel &#38;amp; Woods copyright 2017
Voice-hearing and undiagnosed schizophrenia in the African American community is linked to incidences of police brutality and prison abuse across the United States. Many at-risk individuals with mental health problems not incarcerated, often end up homeless and unaided. Iced Bodies is an interactive performance installation for cellist and electronic instrumental ice sculpture seeking to dramatize the ephemerality of matter in phase transition. The inherent vulnerability of a melting ice sculpture—with its eventual destruction—serves as a commentary to overlooked and undocumented cases of mental disability within underrepresented populations. This work serves as an ode to these struggling minds, and bruised, tattered, and broken bodies on display.Vocal emanations from within the cello serve to bridge socio-political themes in this work to the introspective and personal experience of the audience. In addition to sounds captured and activated through the ice, a disembodied male voice is heard reciting poetic phrases sonically-diffused on spatialized glass sculptures. These sounds serve as sonic feedback loops, evoking the isolation and neglect of voice hearers battling mental disorders. The audience at the end is left to revel in the visual image of freed bodies, represented by shards of ice, electronic entrails, and the sounds of an unrestrained voice liberated from the ice, symbolized by the performer clutching a sound emitting transducer.
Through experimentation, a carefully sculpted sonic universe exposes and amplifies the raw beauty of ice acoustics. Choreographic strikes, taps, scrapes, bowing and gouges produced by Woods, translate into sound by Topel who responds, processes and diffuses these actions across glass panels suspended around the gallery. Over several hours Woods feeds the sonification of material transformation by hastening the process through meditative and violent destruction. Once melted away, fragments of ice reveal the inner “organs” of the sculpture, consisting of hydrophones, wires, and a black Lucite fin.Iced Bodies programmatically engages the cellist by supplanting the cold body—the frozen body—of those lost to mental illness and violence in the African American community, with that of the ice cello. The voice, represented by trapped and fragmented vocalizations from within the ice, links mental illness to the conversation around neglect for those individuals battling these conditions, and acts as a call to action for those of us who can do more to help.

In 1972, artist Jim McWilliams devised a piece for cellist Charlotte Moorman called Ice Music for London. Moorman, nude, “played” a cello-shaped ice sculpture with a plexiglass “bow” for multiple hours. On the 45th anniversary of the original work, Seth Parker Woods and Spencer Topel readdressed McWilliams’ concept with an immersive two-hour performance installation experience. Woods, in a wetsuit, played an obsidian ice cello as Topel mixed and spatialized the sounds from the ice across seven panes of glass distributed around the gallery.

Company is a state of being here, on an album which speaks in worlds. In Edward Hamel’s Gray Neon Life the cellist is his own companion, uttering words which are not so much spoken over the music as sprayed on and under it, made both surface and core: adornment and essence. This double figure – cellist and voice in one – is Seth Parker Woods, and the piece in both concept and execution is a vehicle for his co-creative input, ranging from the precise choice of pitch material to the derivation of the texted component from the SAMO© tag of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s and Al Diaz’s New York street art, of which Woods is an aficionado. What Hamel makes from it is a sort of manifesto for city life and city art, summoned into existence by a harmonic double stop which, recurring as a fourfold refrain, finally offers a tentative way out … or on. On, at first, into a hall of mirrors. The three remaining works on this album – two of them, like Gray Neon Life, written for Woods – surround the cello with electronically produced sounds, and in the first two, by Michael Clarke and George Lewis, these sounds are derived in real time from the cello’s own material. In Pierre Alexandre Tremblay’s asinglewordisnotenough3 (invariant) the sound sources are more diverse, and yet the work’s worlds are again conjured forth by this lone yet multiple figure. Here he is at the centre of it all: muse and master of ceremonies, devising it all for company. © 2016 John Fallas For more detailed information and to purchase physical copies of the album please visit
