Presentation...
...by my brilliant niece, Laura: https://youtu.be/FauQlbdAMvo It was given to the Astronomy Deparment (Harvard-Smithsonian Center For Astrophysics ). So far I've watched only the start and the end (while it streamed live during my visit to my folks in southern California) but plan to view the rest (about an hour total) soon. Hope some of you find it interesting!

When life gives you oranges
Today I picked as many oranges as I could reach, which ended up being 68. I guess it's my way of honoring the 50th anniversary of 1968, the year that rocked the world. (My apologies to Mark Kurlansky, who wrote the book by that title - which is one of my all-time favorite works of nonfiction.) We'll enjoy fresh-squeezed orange juice for a while!

a little humor

I'm just glad Fred isn't a lap cat - I used to have 3, all vying for my one lap.

Update/correction
Sorry you couldn't view the little video. Just now I found it available on YouTube; it was posted in 2013 so you've probably seen it before, although I hadn't. Here you go!

Hope it's happy!
Well, it's still New Year's Eve in the United States! Sorry I'm late to wish my LJ friends from eastern Canada or other countries a very Happy New Year!

I hope you have enjoyed the end of the year holiday season, and that your coming year is overflowing with all the good stuff, like joy, laughter, and fulfillment.

Also...
...too many FB posts like this one: https://www.facebook.com/fillmoremissingpets/photos/a.1406104119652321.1073741829.1374680879461312/1983873181875409/?type=3&theater

It's good to know the pets are being taken care of but so very sad at the same time.
My heart goes out to the many volunteers and firefighters working so hard to help ease the suffering of humans, pets, and wildlife confronted by the fires.

Overwhelm
My first initial is R, I was given no middle name (in adulthood I chose the initial C), my last initial is N, and my family nickname is Ron. So my middle initial should be O to make my initials RON. That O would stand for Overwhelm.

Current overwhelm is due to a combination of things, from global and national politics to global warming to California wildfires - all of which overlap and spiral all around each other.

The past week I've become a Thomas Fire (Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties) news junkie, even to the point of watching Twitter feeds (I don't have an account). It's all so heartbreaking. Here's one of the latest posts, representing much of the heartache - and resilience - for me: https://twitter.com/twitter/statuses/940351491046436865

P.S. My daughter is safe but still too close to the fires for her mama's comfort.

just dropped by...
...to mention something about "Giving Tuesday," but realized I've been away from LJ a bit too long and read some very thoughtful yet sad posts from some of you...

I would like to reply directly to each of you with heartfelt comments but simply can't - at least for a while. Giving Tuesday, and end-of-the-year charitable giving in general, is time-consuming but essential to me. I've considered changing it to the start of each year, but, well, maybe next year. (I do prefer to do things when everyone else is not necessarily doing it rather than being a sheep - that's the rebel in me.)

Meanwhile, if you don't work for a company that provides matched giving and you're interested in matched donations (donors match your gift with double or even triple the amount), today is the day for it. On the other hand, matched giving is controversial and not necessarily as good as you might think it is! Regardless, Giving Tuesday does make it easy to give any amount you might be able to spare - or at least reminds us all to give, one way or another.

Perhaps more important than financial donations is the sharing of love and support between friends - the kind we experience here in our little corner of LJ all the time. Thank YOU for still being here!

One more pic
Today my brother posted this on his FB page:

3:29 pm
My canine nephew, Max (2/2001-9/18/2017)
My dad emailed me and my sister to let us know that Max, our brother's amazing canine companion, died today at the grand old age of 16. In the past year he had on-again off-again digestive ailments, joint problems, and deafness, but still enjoyed his life - including daily walks and his housemates (one canine, two feline, and two human).

My brother was always a cat person who didn't think much of dogs, until my sister-in-law (who adores all animals) convinced him to adopt Max, a wonderful mix of black lab, German Shepherd, and probably some Great Dane (based on his longer legs). Max's smart, friendly and caring personality plus good looks had us all hooked from the start. He quickly became my brother's cure for a long-term tendency toward depression. It will be a tough grieving process, even though we've all been braced against the inevitable for some time now. And my visit with my brother and parents next month will include a definite emptiness without Maxo. My heart hurts.

Here are some pics:

A little funny
While filing some papers I found this clipping from 2011, took a pic of it, but was unable to upload it via the LJ editor (it kept appearing sideways, for some unknown reason). I'm glad it was available online to share. This would be moi:

In lieu of a real post (again), some pics
Yesterday when I got home from doing errands, Fred was lying near the head of the bed, rather than the foot of it which he tends to prefer. So I snapped the following pics:
