Nautical Terms 2: Electric Boogaloo!
Yup, I've done it! Here's the new and improved "Special Edition" of Nautical Terms: Songs For The Modern Seafarer which was originally posted in December of '04.
Songs have been added, songs have been removed, and the cover art has been given a makeover. And just for nostalgia's sake, I've also included a .zip of the original mix.

"We're going to steal a ship? That ship?"
"Commandeer. We're going to commandeer that ship. Nautical term."
-William Turner and Captain Jack Sparrow, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
NOTE: These have all been uploaded to SendSpace. If SS doesn't work well for you, please comment; I'll try to upload the files onto a different host.
let us sing the sailor-song</i></small>
Pirate-themed technopop. Almost like "Barbie Girl" on the high seas. Need I say more?
3. Pirates of Penzance- I Am A Pirate King (NEW!)
Away to the cheating world go you,
Where pirates all are well-to-do;
But I’ll be true to the song I sing,
And live and die a Pirate King.
I honestly cannot believe I didn't include this song on the original mix. It's a classic! Hurrah for Gilbert and Sullivan.
4. The Vandals- Pirate's Life
Seven hits of L
and nobody could tell
So I spent every dime
just to get to Anaheim
I was in the Magic Kingdom
Now I'm in the Caribbean
You get something really wicked
when you spend an E-ticket
You know, for those times when you drop acid at Disneyland and suddenly find yourself trapped in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. I dunno about you, but I HATE it when that happens.
5. The Decemberists- Shanty for the Arethusa (NEW!)
We set to sail on a packet full of spice, rum and tea-leaves.
We've emptied out all the bars and the bowery hotels.
Tell your daughters: do not walk the streets alone tonight
Tell your daughters: do not walk the streets alone tonight.
Incredibly creepy. Covers the whole "pirates were right bastards" angle. Plus, it's The Decemberists-- you can't go wrong there.
6. Irish Rovers- Weigh Hey and Up She Rises
What will we do with a drunken sailor
What will we do with a drunken sailor
What will we do with a drunken sailor
Earl-aye in the morning?
How could I leave this one out? Probably one of the most well-known sea shanties in existence.
7. Hans Zimmer- Two Hornpipes (Tortuga) (NEW!)
From Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
(Instrumental)
A nice, spirited ditty. Good for drunken pub fights.
8. Flogging Molly- Seven Deadly Sins* (NEW!)
Sail away where no ball and chain
Can keep us from the roarin' waves
Together undivided but forever we'll be free
So sail away aboard our rig
The moon is full and so are we
We're seven drunken pirates
We're the seven deadly sins
For when that drunken pub fight turns into an all-out stomp-fest.
9. Reliant K- The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything
We don't know what he did,
But we're down with Captain Kidd.
We don't wake up before lunch,
But we all eat Captain Crunch.
We don't smoke, we don't chew,
We watch Captain Kangaroo.
Pirates of ineptitude = comic GOLD. Even when it's a song from a Christian kid's show, covered by a Christian band.
10. Poe- Walk The Walk
Take to the beat of my own drum
I wanna give to the beat of my own drum
Fly, cry, win, lose, live, die, take five
Pleased to meet you
Not even a mention of pirates in this one... But I've always regarded this song as a sort of idealistic pirate manifesto. Walking to the beat of your own drum. Plus, on a scale of one to ten? Poe rates a "fucking awesome."
11. Sex Pistols- Friggin' In The Riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
There was fuck all else to do
The dirtiest sea shanty in the history of EVER. Sung by one of the dirtiest bands. Of course.
12. Tim Curry- Professional Pirate
From Muppet Treasure Island
Some say that pirates steal
And should be feared and hated
I say we're victims of bad press: it's all exaggerated
We'd never stab you in the back, we'd never lie or cheat
We're just about the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet!
Sometimes bullshit can be a valid advertising strategy. Just roll with it.
13. Klaus Badelt- The Medallion Calls*
From Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl
(Instrumental)
The score backing one of the greatest entrances in cinema history.
14. Jimmy Buffet- A Pirate Looks at 40
Yes, I am a pirate, two hundred years too late
The cannons don't thunder, there's nothin' to plunder
I'm an over-forty victim of fate
Arriving too late, arriving too late
The token angsty song! I'm sure most pirate fans feel this way at times (give or take a few years off the age).
15. Y Kant Tori Read- Pirates
there is a light that
shines on the frontier
pirates, yeah
pirates
and on a dark night
when you feel lonely
and the world just
can't understand you
pirates, yeah
pirates
Old skool Tori Amos! Straight from the '80s. It's a pretty good song, despite the fact that this wasn't the best period for her. For anyone with escapist pirate tendencies.
16. George Harrison- The Pirate Song
I've got a Jolly Roger
It's black and white and vast
Get out of your Skull and Crossbones
And I'll run it up your mast
My love of pirates feels so much more valid now. How can you argue with a Beatle?
17. Pirates of the Caribbean- Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life For Me)
We're rascals, scoundrels, villains, and knaves
Drink up me hearties yo ho
We're devils and black sheep - really bad eggs
Drink up me hearties yo ho
What kind of pirate fanmix would this BE if I didn't include this one? Go ahead-- grab a bottle of rum and dance around the bonfire.
**BONUS: Billy Joel- Captain Jack
Captain Jack will get you high tonight
And take you to your special island
Captain Jack will get you by tonight
Just a little push, and you'll be smilin'
I couldn't include this on the mix, because it has NOTHING to do with piracy. But the title and the chorus are rather amusing.
**BONUS: DJ Tiesto- He's a Pirate (Radio Edit)
(Instrumental)
Disney released a CD full of different high-profile DJ's techno remixes of "He's a Pirate," from Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. They're all pretty crack-tastic, but I picked this one at random.
.ZIP of REDUX! (62MB, 19 tracks, 2 coverart images, and a .rtf of the lyrics) ETA: YSI Mirror
SENDSPACE REUPLOAD (08/22/06)
.ZIP of the original (43MB, 14 tracks, the original coverart, and a .rtf file of the lyrics)
ETA: There's been a request for the rest of the "He's a Pirate" remixes. Who am I to say no?
DJ Tiesto- He's a Pirate (Radio Edit Remix)
NOT the same one I uploaded originally. The beginnings are different.
Frank Lamboy & Glenn Friscia- He's a Pirate (Tribal Treasure Remix
The spookily-whispered "Pirates!" is what makes this one the most cracktastic of all. Very reminiscent of the always hilarious "Witches!" murmuring that peppers the soundtrack to Dario Argento's Suspiria.
Jason Fernandez- He's a Pirate (Pelo Verde Remix)
...I just keep trying to imagine people in a club, dancing to these. It's a great mental image.
Redtop & Sneaky Pete- He's a Pirate (Pete n' Red's Jolly Roger Trance Remix)
The only one that utilizes clips from Dead Man's Chest, I think. It's actually a bit repetitive, but hey! It's Bill Nighy! I'm not gonna complain
Chris Joss- He's a Pirate (Ship Ahoy Tribal Remix)
My favorite! Probably the most unique and inventive-sounding of all of them. Drums! Spanish guitar! Church bells!
DJ Tiesto- He's a Pirate (Orchestral Remix)
The same as the first one. But three minutes longer.

And for anyone who's interested: I've got another pirate fanmix in the works, though it's PotC-specific. The artwork is taking a while to finish (I got this GREAT idea to make a graphic for every song... I am an idiot), but it should be done soon. Keep a weather eye on the horizon.
ETA: By request, I've just uploaded the rest of "He's a Pirate" remixes. You can find them under the cut.
