attention is the commodity
what we trade without noticing
i wrote this earlier this year and shared it on twitter. it’s been sitting with me since and it feels even more relevant now. posting it here as a marker.
attention is the most valuable commodity in the world
every platform competes for it every business model depends on it and most people don’t realize they’re trading it away
i read infinite jest in 2006
each reread has revealed the same warning: attention is scarce and someone will monetize it
in the novel wallace imagined a film so irresistible it left viewers entranced
unable to look away unable to live fully
today that film exists
not on tape but as the algorithm in your pocket
tuned to your micro-cravings designed to hold you until you forget you have a choice
instagram scrolls
tiktok loops
youtube autoplay
a carousel of infinite stimuli numbing boredom anxiety and existential dread
these platforms tap the same dopaminergic pathways as substances - reward without meaning
even productivity becomes addiction: slack threads notion dashboards quantified-self trackers color-coded calendars
we perform purpose in neatly designed ui but forget to live it
your iphone screen-time chart is the clearest balance sheet of your life
the numbers are precise the implications are not
delight isn’t the problem
the problem is that delight is engineered at the lowest cost to them and the highest cost to you
the exit is simple not easy
• decide what you want to build
• allocate attention like scarce capital
• measure adjust repeat
• guard deep focus the way you guard your health
real freedom is directing your own mind
it means meeting a child’s eyes when they share something “small” and realizing it isn’t
presence is active work
it asks for discipline restraint grace and a daily refusal to sell your gaze to those who profit from your distraction
tata for now! here’s to hoping you put down the phone step away from the scroll and step into the real world. your attention is yours - cherish it.
