PayPal services launched in the Maldives on Monday through a historic cross-border payment integration, bringing an end to a long wait.
The services, introduced through a seamless integration established between PayPal and Ooredoo Fintech’s m-Faisaa, was officially inaugurated on Monday morning by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in a ceremony held at the Barceló Nasandhura Male’.
The ceremony was honored by President Muizzu, and attended by Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed; Vice President of PayPal’s Asia-Pacific Division, Amir Valliani; Managing Director and CEO of Ooredoo Maldives, Shadi Qawasmi; Regional CEO of Ooredoo Group, Ahmed Al Naeema; CEO of Ooredoo Fintech International, Mirko Giacco; alongside senior government officials and representatives from Ooredoo and PayPal, as well as business leaders and representatives from the local creative industry.
The global payment platform has been integrated with Ooredoo Fintech’s m-Faisaa service, allowing Maldivian users to link their PayPal and m-Faisaa wallets, enabling seamless cross-border transactions and global e-commerce participation.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Muizzu described the introduction of PayPal services in the Maldives as the fulfillment of a key pledge he made during his 2023 campaign.
He said that the milestone forms a core component of his administration’s broader digital transformation roadmap, “Maldives 2.0”, and the strategic pathway to achieving Vision 2040.
He characterized the introduction of PayPal services in the Maldives as a monumental gateway that directly links Maldivian entrepreneurs, freelancers and innovators to international markets, allowing them to participate fully in the global digital economy.
Meanwhile, Saeed said that the seamless integration of PayPal services in the Maldives was the direct result of intensive work undertaken by President Muizzu since assuming office.
He noted that the integration effectively eliminates a long-standing barrier to expanding Maldivian participation in the global digital economy.
The Economic Ministry states that it expects the historic milestone to catalyze revolutionary growth across the domestic e-commerce landscape and digital economy, unlocking unprecedented avenues for private enterprise, while also strengthening the foundational resilience of the national economy, creates immediate avenues for Maldivian products in international trade, and secures a vital new pipeline for foreign exchange inflows into the country.
