Saving Lives
Protecting Freedoms

Secular Rescue works to protect atheists and freethinkers who exercise their basic human rights to freedom of expression, conscience, and nonbelief—and encourage others to exercise those rights, as well. Our work saves lives, lives that are in danger because of blasphemy laws, religious zealots, extremist ideologies, and governments that promote oppressive dogmas.

Secular Rescue is specifically designed to assist human rights advocates, specifically journalists, secular-freethought writers and bloggers, and secular publishers and atheist rights activists whose lives and freedom are in danger because of their writing, nonreligious views, and related public activism.

Do You Qualify for Help

Before applying for aid, please make sure you meet these four mandatory prerequisites:

  • The applicant must be nonreligious or an atheist;
  • The applicant must be under threat of violence within the past 180 days (and can provide verifiable proof);
  • The applicant must be facing legal discrimination, social ostracization, or physical violence because of accusations/charges of blasphemy or apostasy (and can provide documentation or other means of verifiable proof);
  • The applicant must engage in, or have engaged in, public secular rights activism and be able to provide documentation of a body of work covering at least one full year.

Unfortunately, Secular Rescue does not provide direct assistance if you do not meet the criteria listed above. However, we are pleased to provide up-to-date listings of other aid programs and links to a variety of online resources for those in need of help.
