Starting Fresh
And leaving Substack..
Dear friends,
This is Maks, and this is Second Space. You’re getting this email because you subscribed to my newsletter sometime in the last few years. It’s been dead for the last little while, but I am intending to relaunch it with gusto in the New Year.
I’m writing to let you know that I’m going to be taking the newsletter off Substack, and moving to Beehiiv. I’ll be porting the mailing list to Beehiiv in the next few days, and you may receive an email confirming this – if you do, please don’t be alarmed, it’s just me! After this happens, I will be deleting my Substack, though you’ll still be able to find my essays on the new site and you can find me on my website, on Bluesky, and on Instagram.
Why the change? Substack has increasingly been creating a walled garden around its infrastructure, locking users in with more social functionality and aiming to become it’s own social medium. At the same time I’m pretty uncomfortable with how comfortable the company is with far right and nazi voices on here and its forthright refusal to do anything about it. I thought since I’m starting fresh, I might as well start somewhere else.
About a week from now I’ll send the first post of the new version of Second Space, in which I’ll talk in more depth about why I’m restarting the newsletter, and the joy of being properly medicated for the first time in my life. I hope you’ll be there to read it.
See you soon!
