My, time flies!
It's been roughly a year (a week short of it, actually) since I've made a public entry on LiveJournal. My wife has gone about the same length of time.
Both of us are on Facebook (rarely use MySpace since it's become the cyberghetto of the internets) and I know a number of you stay in touch with us over there.
I'm packing for an Ironman triathlon next Saturday, which explains why I haven't really made time to post over here. Between that and work, I find little in the way of spare time.
I'll try to post here more often.. if anyone is even reading this journal anymore.
Hope you are all doing well. I should try to catch up soon, though that's a hell of a lot of reading!

Pot or Kettle?
"Those were taken out of context and that's cruel," Palin said. "It's mean-spirited. It's immature. It's unprofessional and those guys are jerks if they came away with it, taking things out of context, and then tried to spread something on national news." -- Sarah Palin, referring to rumors being circulated by McCain staffers who blame her for their campaign's failed pursuit of the presidency.
I find this amusing because she's complaining that someone is doing exactly what describes every stump speech she gave..

Vista and CNN's CSS
Does CNN.com look weird to anyone else running Microsoft Vista? http://cnn.com
It looks like the CSS is getting discarded when I view it from my Vista machine, but looks fine from Windows XP. I've even tried different browsers but experience the same problem.

West Virginia Early Voting
You push the Obama button and it records McCain. You push Obama again and it records McCain again. After a few more times, it eventually registers Obama. I don’t know what is more troubling to me here… the fact that the company that makes the machines claims that no inaccurate votes have been cast (like they would know the intentions of the voter?) or that County Clerk blames the voter.
In West Virginia's Jackson County, there were some reports that voting machines were accidentally recording the wrong vote.
"I went in there and pushed the Democrat ticket, and it jumped to the Republican ticket for president of the United States," said Calvin Thomas, an 81-year-old West Virginian. Thomas has voted in West Virginia in every election since Harry Truman defeated Thomas Dewey in 1948.
The same thing happened to his daughter, Micki Clendenin, when she cast her ballot. In both cases, poll workers at the site had them touch the screen a few more times, and the voting machine changed their ballot to their candidate choice.
"The lady came in, and she was -- very nicely, she just said, 'it's just been doing that.' She said, 'just hit it again.' So we hit it again, and this time it did go to Obama," Clendenin said.
CNN's Brian Todd reported that at least five voters in two West Virginia counties said they encountered the same problem. State and local officials said that they were isolated cases and that poll workers fixed the problems so the correct vote was cast.
The machines were manufactured by an Omaha, Nebraska-based company, Election System and Software. The machines will be used in several states this year and were among those that had problems in Ohio in 2004.
The company said that it has inspected the machines in West Virginia and that no one there has cast an inaccurate vote.
The West Virginia secretary of state's office said most of the problems occur because the machines are not calibrated properly. Jeff Waybright, the Jackson County clerk, disagreed and said the problems reported there were probably the result of voter error.

A matter of great Urgincy
Dear American:
I need to ask you to support an urgent secret business relationship with a transfer of funds of great magnitude.
I am Ministry of the Treasury of the Republic of America. My country has had crisis that has caused the need for large transfer of funds of 800 billion dollars US. If you would assist me in this transfer, it would be most profitable to you.
I am working with Mr. Phil Gram, lobbyist for UBS, who will be my replacement as Ministry of the Treasury in January. As a Senator, you may know him as the leader of the American banking deregulation movement in the 1990s. This transactin is 100% safe.
This is a matter of great urgincy. We need a blank check. We need the funds as quickly as possible. We cannot directly transfer these funds in the names of our close friends because we are constantly under surveillance. My family lawyer advised me that I should look for a reliable and trustworthy person who will act as a next of kin so the funds can be transferred.
Please reply with all of your bank account, IRA and college fund account numbers and those of your children and grandchildren to wallstreetbailout@treasury.gov so that we may transfer your commission for this transaction. After I receive that information, I will respond with detailed information about safeguards that will be used to protect the funds.
Yours Faithfully Minister of Treasury Paulson

House Update
I still hate painting, but Jen and I are slowly getting there.
I'll post before/after pictures of the house in the next couple of weeks.
I'm staying very busy with work (big implementation that goes live on 8/1) and coaching the running team. What little spare time I have seems to go into doing stuff around the house, whereas I should be trying to rest/relax a little.
Owning a home is a hell of a lot of work!

it's been a couple of weeks since we moved to the new house, so i figure it is a good time for an update.
here's an update: i hate painting!
other than that, things are going well -- we're slowly getting unpacked, settled, and our furniture delivered. the new living room furniture came last week, the bedroom furniture (chest, dresser) is next week. we can actually finish unpacking then.
we love the house -- especially clancy. he's getting used to it and once we fence the back yard, it will be so nice to be able to let him out without having to actually go walk him every time.
i'm learning that owning a home is a hell of a lot of work. i suppose that yard work wouldn't be so bad if i weren't trying to stack it on top of painting, unpacking, etc. i feel like i haven't really had a weekend in several months, mostly because i haven't.

ok, time to shut down...
next time i post, we'll be in our new house!
i may actually post from the blackberry if i have time.. we hired movers, so it's not like i should be busy or anything, right? :)
in case comcast screws up (like they always have in the past) and i don't have service again by tomorrow, have a good holiday weekend everyone!

Make The Pie Higher
I think we all agree, the past is over. This is still a dangerous world. It's a world of madmen and uncertainty And potential mental losses.
Rarely is the question asked Is our children learning? Will the highways of the Internet become more few?
How many hands have I shaked? They misunderestimate me. I am a pit-bull on the pantleg of opportunity.
I know that the human being and the fish can coexist. Families is where our nation finds hope, Where our wings take dream.
Put food on your family! Knock down the tollbooth! Vulcanize society! Make the pie higher! I am the Decider!
* this Haiku poem is composed of Bush quotes and was arranged by Washington Post writer Richard Thompson
