News from scrubsville... Not so much

Which is part of the reason I've not been around. Life without certainty of continued employment has been stressful, but no more so than for others who perhaps experience this on a more regular basis. Our group formed over 15 years ago and, while the hospital has always tried to get the better of the deal, this is the first time many of us have wondered a) if they're really going to boot us out and b) is it worth staying even if they don't. Aside from all the hospital politics DRAHMAH, or in spite of, the contract has been approved. 18 months rather than 3 years ( hospital's choice) and one of our department's strongest members jumped ship and moved to Portland.

It has seriously crossed my mind. But for now I'll wait. I hate change.

ION, three kids in college. Oy! Hopefully a couple will graduate before the end of 2012 (typo was '2021' LOL) Two living at home, one moved onto campus with friends. No potential daughters-in-law yet and no unplanned pregnancies. Yay, team!

Dark, cold, rainy, but maybe flurries tonight or tomorrow! I love snow so long as it covers the grass and looks pretty.

Chessie tries to catch fish in the pond every time she goes out. I've caught her up to her chest in the cold, dirty water. The other dogs couldn't care less about them. I'm mystified but impressed by her perseverance.

My African Gray is obsessed with my Swiffer WetJet and croons at it, trying to coax it into his cage, presumably with amorous intent. Again mystified.

My mother put the kibosh on the only present I could come up with for my dad: OnStar FMV. She insists that he's a good driver at 83, despite family reviews to the contrary. *sigh* I am uneasy about the end of that road. Being a loving daughter, I warned them when they drove to Atlanta in Oct (after i offered to fly them and their golf clubs) that if they were going to die in a fiery car crash they should be sure not to take anyone else with them.

TMI. Sorry. If you've made it this far, know that I love you all and miss you all but really lead a very boring life and have nothing worth reading to report.

Hi, all!

It's November 22 and I'm sitting on my deck with a duraflame log in the firepit and a glass of cheap Pinot Grigio in hand. Unbelievable! It was in the 70s here today. Bell bottoms, leisure suits, and shags -- both hair and carpeting -- and super windy, so perhaps the fire was not the best idea but it's lovely.

I had some more gum grafting done a week ago. Nuff said, except for the fact that this was much less painful than previous experiences with same. I'm already back to talking and eating, much to the family's chagrin. ;) Two weeks off work, though, and I feel guilty for not being there. Not guilty enough to call and offer my services, after all, I'm heading for Atlanta tomorrow with #1 and #3 sons for Thanksgiving at my little bro's house. The 'rents are already there and, goddess willing, we'll be there about midnight. Scrubshub and #2son are staying home to go to the OSU/Michigan game on Saturday. And to take care of the dogs, cats, birds, and fish. mwahahahaha!

Some Christmas shopping is done. Some is being considered. Who would've thought that SH would want a steam mop for Xmas? Not I! #1son wanted a large dry-erase board. Done. #2son is getting a telescope. Thanks, cretkid for the invaluable advice and assistance there! #3son has not made his wishes known. I'm thinking about a gel fuel fireplace of some sort for my bro... Will check out the screened porch's suitability for same when I get there. May not be practical.

Did you know Bed Bath and Beyond has open stock All-clad? *drool*

I've been spending way too much time on FB playing flash games. I need an intervention.

O hai thar, levaquin!

So, sinus infection, not bronchitis. Still feeling like crap, though. Work tomorrow, come hives or high snowfall. I'm still not sure what to do about Christmas dinner. I'm hoping I'll feel well enough to go grocery shopping this afternoon. Damn it! I hate to 'dumb down' Christmas dinner! SH offered to have #2Son grill something. SRSLY?? You want to cook out? In Ohio?? For Christmas??? Is it too much to ask that someone go pick up a Honeybaked ham?? "You have to order those in advance and stand in line and..." WTF ever, dude. I'll deal somehow.

I did manage to guilt #3Son and his friend into helping decorate the big tree last night. SH decided to decorate the tree in the dining room by himself. "What are you putting on it?" asks I. "The box of ornaments for that tree." "Well, no, you're not because I just saw that box in the basement." "I'm putting these on." "Those are not all there are." As he made no move to bring up the others, I did it myself and then got punished with the guilts when he glared at me at bedtime and informed me that he was really sore and had done too much. (Hernia surgery a week ago.) Dude, I never asked you to deck the halls. I asked the boys. I just insisted that, if you were going to do it, you do it correctly with, you know, actual glass balls and such and not just the garlands. *eyeroll*

Newsflash: apparently a common side effect of levaquin is insomnia. Are you fucking kidding me?? SONOFABITCH! I tossed and turned all. night. long. I'm hoping that changing my dosing schedule and taking it this morning along with copious amounts of benadryl and my iPhone sleep app tonight will put an end to that crap. At least it's broad-spectrum enough that if I am also working on bronchitis it will knock it out, along with every other potential bacterial pathogen in a five mile radius. I'm bound to start feeling better soon. I hope. Please, God? Or Yahweh? Or Santa? Anybody?

revolos55 has a lovely holiday tale of mouse herding here.

Sick.

Started as a cold. Has progressed to a mild form of bronchitis (yes, I'm self-diagnosing. Bad doctor!) and diarrhea. Currently, I'm trying to rehydrate but since nothing tastes good, not even water (and I LIKE water), it's hard to keep pushing myself to drink. I'm tempted to have #1Son bring IV supplies home from work along with a couple of liters of crystalloid. I'll see how I'm doing at three o'clock. He's there til 5.

So long as I'm not doing anything, I'm OK and I don't cough. I don't think I've been febrile but my chest and abs hurt from coughing.

Then the puppies got out.

I would headdesk if I had the energy.

I caught them, after trekking what seemed to be miles in the snow and cold, but couldn't keep them. They kept trying to run in opposite directions and, at 70 and 60 pounds, I had to let them go after I wound up on my ass in the snow, panting like a pulmonary cripple at the top of Everest, Ziva's collar in my hand. I staggered back to the deck s-l-o-w-l-y and sat down in my pajamas in the snow until I had recovered enough to make it through the back door. Then I grabbed the phone and called SH to come home from coffee and catch the pups.

Meanwhile, I lay on the floor of the kitchen for half an hour until my BP was above 80. If you can feel a pulse at your wrist/radial artery, it's above 80. Carotid pulse means it's above 60. I couldn't feel my fingers. I don't know what BP that indicates but it wasn't because they were cold. Probably cerebral hypoperfusion.

The cats came and lay next to me on the floor to insure continued proof of life. Cats giving CPR: there's a thought. Chessie would probably have been there but she'd locked herself in #1Son's bedroom. *sigh*

So, my annual vacation the week before Christmas week to get things done has been a bust. I've been mostly in bed since Wednesday. I think presents are all bought. Not sure when I'll be able to get to the grocery store. Nothing's been wrapped, the trees aren't decorated, half my laundry is done but I may have to make do with that. I go back to work Monday. If I'm at all able. We don't get sick days.

SH had an inguinal hernia repair done Monday and is doing great but isn't in any position to do much more than he already has. He'll make a run to the liquor store next week for Tanqueray for my dad and brother. But if he overdoes it, he gets sore and tired. I was hoping #2Son could help SH raise the height of the fence where Ziva gets over it (Victor getting out was entirely my fault. I thought he deserved a run after his sister had been scampering after bunnies. Then Z decided to hop the fence again and that was all she wrote.) but he had to go to work. #3Son is still in bed. It is now 1:50. I may have to legislate/delegate jobs for the three of them, such as decorating and grocery shopping. Yeah. That'll go over like a lead balloon. Kill. Me. Now.

The scrubsspawn and I are at my bro's in Atlanta with the g'rents, too. #1Son, up uncharacteristically early, and I are watching the Macy's Day Parade (sorry. I've called it that for years.) I still don't understand the point of the Rockettes. The cast from Hair did Aquarius. Damn, I'd love to see that. The cast from Shrek did I'm A Believer and Donkey is still love. The Kermit balloon is still the best.

Tonight we gorge. Tomorrow, a late dinner at Watershed, Emily Salyers' (Indigo Girls) restaurant. I heart Watershed.

Be it with family, friends, or just chatting online with your loved ones, have a blessed Thanksgiving.

This and that

Someone sent me fic feedback more than two years after posting. That was a lovely surprise and made me go back and reread the thing. Parts I quite like and overall I'm satisfied with it so I guess it's stood the test of time, but it's hardly my best effort. But the feedback was good for my ego.

Bravo, Brandon Sanderson! This is the <strike>poor schmuck</strike> author chosen by Robert Jordan's editor-wife, Harriet, to finish the Wheel of Time series. He did an outstanding job on The Gathering Storm. The plot moved at an acceptable pace and I actually felt as though things happened in this book, rather than just setting the stage for things to come, as has happened in several books. There was no Lan, no Elayne or Birgitta, but otherwise he hit all the main characters. I actually enjoyed this entry into the series far more than I did the past few, which were bogged down in the great sink hole of prolonged and enormous fantasy fiction. This effort seemed far more focused and easier to follow. Two more books to go, one a year from now, one two years from now, and I'm actually looking forward to them again. And, of course, the last lines of the book will be "The Wheel of Time turns, and ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the age that gave it birth comes again..." because it's, you know, The Wheel of Time. The fans who think there will be an eternally happy ending with the Dark One's destruction haven't been reading the fine print and I mock you all from afar.

I'm way behind on Dexter as one of the eps didn't record and Showtime On Demand has been a pain in the ass over it, but John Lithgow is completely creepy in a different but equally disturbing fashion to Jimmy Smits last year. These guys who almost always play good guys must be having a blast being Teh EvOl. But it creeps me the fuck out. How say all of you? Perhaps we need a poll.

I'm UTD on Californication, tho, and cringed at the end of last week because I am so not a fan of that chick. I love the stripper and the TA (and Karen, of course) but the Brit snob is completely not my cup of tea.

Loving NCIS this season however NCIS:LA does not impress. WTF did they do with Macy, the boss from the pilot eps? I liked her. She had depth. Potential. Bah! Mike Rowe trumps NCIS:LA and even my Tivo understands this without explanation. TV Guide NCIS spoiler: Robert Wagner has been cast as Tony's dad!! SQUEE! Due to air in January.

dashakay has pointed me toward some Big Bang Theory fic. I may never forgive her. Also, cretkid wrote a drabble about Wallowitz for me here. Just scroll down to my request and the drabble is in the reply. Thank you again, CK!! *hug*

I miss True Blood. Has anyone seen the True Blood soft drink? Borders had some yesterday but it seemed exorbitantly priced so I passed. Hot Topic has three TB t-shirts (and a metric fuck-ton of New Moon crap), tho: a bright red Fangoria t, a Bon Temps HS football team t, and the Merlotte's waitress t, which is the one I bought although I may have to go back for the Fangoria one.

I bought my Hallmark ornaments for the year last week: the leg lamp from A Christmas Story (sadly, not lit from within, damnit! C'mon, designer people. It's a lamp!!), Kirk, Spock, and Pike from The Menagerie (TOS). Kirk and Spock argue and are so very slashy that it makes me smile. The third ornament is the Swedish Chef with Lobster Banditos!! They don't move but they say several phrases from the skit and the Chef sings his song! *loves* I made sure to get my ass out early this year as I had to order last year's Muppet ornament on eBay and the damned thing doesn't work! *sob* I was crushed. I may go back for Dorothy and Toto and the TOS phaser (with sound). *contemplates spending more $$* *contemplates new master bath* *contemplates robbing a bank* *sigh*

Been gone. Am back. I think.

So...... It seems I took a short break from the interwebs (LJ, DW, YIM, fanfic) that turned into a couple of months. *glances around* Looks much the same from where I stand/sit/type. ;) I've missed birthdays and sundry life experiences and am now perusing hundreds of entries in an honest effort to catch up, so if you get a late reply to an entry or a late birthday hug, please to be excusing my belated self. I am quite out of practice at this internet stuff.

What have I been up to, you ask? Reading. Work. Puppies. Children.

Reading: I've read all the Jim Butchers over about five weeks in September and October, both the Dresden Files and the Codex Alera series. I love Harry Dresden. He is John Crichton, with all of his hope and bad planning and snarky humor, minus wormholes but with magic. The fantasy series is enjoyable and well-written but my heart belongs to Harry.

Work: I'll spare you the draaaaaaahma. Regime change has not been forthcoming but the challengers are still annoying us all. One partner is on medical leave... for at least FOUR MONTHS. Just what we all needed: more work and more call over the holidays. If it wasn't for the patients and the nursing staff and, you know, mortgage payments, I'd be so out of there.

Puppies: Wonderful! They're sleeping through the night (meaning we don't have to take them out to pee in the wee hours), progressing amazingly well with their obedience training, and growing. Victor is up to 55 pounds and Ziva is 45. She's bossy and picks on him and sleeps with Chessie in our bed. He's sweet but wimpy and a bit fearful so he's destined for more trips to the pet store and puppy kindergarten and such in an effort to better socialize him. He's also only got one testicle descended and so the breeder won't be breeding him and we can neuter him when Ziva gets spayed. One less headache. \o/

Children: #1Son is looking forward to a court date Monday for a DUI. *headdesk* For a great kid, he can be awfully dumb sometimes. His car has been revoked and we'll be selling it and replacing it with something far less sporty and more practical. Maybe we'll be replacing it. He may need to learn how to ride the city bus to school for a while as we won't be subsidizing his car insurance any longer and we're tired of chauffeuring him.

#2Son turned 20 yesterday. Family party Sunday. He's still power lifting and college seems to be going well. He's been blowing leaves out to the curb all week for the city to vacuum up and was not amused when the puppies played in them a few nights ago. *g*

#3Son, high school senior, continues to try and negotiate with us for $$ to live in a dorm next year. I am not paying for him to move ten minutes from my house however he is welcome to take out a loan to pay for it. Calculus has been a struggle but it seems to be the new teacher as he's always been in honors math and everyone else in the class is struggling, too.

If you have not yet read amalnahurriyeh's Machines of Freedom, run, do not walk over to her journal and read it now. It's a lovely long fic, beautifully written, with illustrations by scooly42! It's kidfic, apocafic, MSR, and had a (for me) surprise ending (no doubt because I'm slow on the uptake). In the words of Shaina Berkowitz, what's not to love?

Damn, I hate the shorter days. It's 4:30 and almost dark.

Soooo...

Long time no see. Or, since the puppies are sucking up most of my spare time, that should probably be Kong time no see. Ziva and Victor are gorgeous, growing like weeds, and more fun that a barrel full of... well, PUPPIES!

Victor:

Ziva:

Chessie and Buddy do very well with the puppies, although Chessie believes she has dibs on their toys and Buddy wants them to leave him alone when he goes potty. We've only had them fifteen days and already they look twice the size they were when they came home.

William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy and Patrick Stewart and Bruce Boxleitner and Scully's Mom to be at D*C! Sadly for my BSG friends, EJO and Michael Hogan cancelled. *hugs BSG friends tight and consoles them with tequila* Felicia Day (oh, poor Penny!) and Thomas Dekker (weep for T:SCC!) and Ron Glass (I love you, Book/Harris, forever and always!) will attend. Gareth David Lloyd I may just eat with a spoon this year. He is just as adorable as you would expect Ianto to be, even from the back of the room. I am currently debating costuming, assuming that I don't injure myself tripping over the curb again before the con even starts. *eyeroll* Grace I am not at the best of times but bruising and scrape-age led me to not wear leather or the corset last year. Of course, leather in the Atlanta summer is never a wise move but I've never laid claim to wisdom even when experience was the teacher. I did do Scully in scrubs and lab coat but nobody got it. *sigh*

ION, my brother wants me to record a flute intro for one of their songs while I'm down there. That'll be interesting. I might want to take a listen to what he expects of me. I also might want to time travel back to the late 70s when I could actually play old Betsy.

PM me if you want my D*C contact info (ie: cell phone). Nikki, I lost your number at the next to last phone change.

Love you all!

ETA: Michael Hogan IS on the schedule. I misread it. D'OH!

My new German Shepherd puppy, Ziva, was born yesterday! \o/ No pictures yet and the breeder is a bit low on sleep but she dashed off a birth announcement for me this morning. These are her parents. SH is very interested in a sable from a litter born two weeks ago so we may have two pups come August. Yeah, it'll be a lot of work for a while BUT we'll get it over with all at once. And we've got Chessie and Buddy to help train them by example. SH is retired, the boys are all still living at home... Lots of help. SH mentioned calling his pup Ivan. I'm not crazy about that but I have six weeks to come up with something better.

*bounces* I can't wait for pictures!

Do they do anything or is it just like playing with virtual dolls? annimarie75, 'splain it to me!

Since I usually talk about the dogs and the kids, pictures of my cats:

Pixel:

Penny:

They were litter mates and just turned 14. They're the sweetest cats in the universe and if it wasn't for the peeing in inappropriate areas, we'd have no complaints. For the record, laminate flooring is NOT pee-proof. I think we'll replace it with hardwood. At least that's sealed and can be sanded down and refinished. The laminate just kind of separates from the bottom. *sigh* We only just put that in a year ago.

They are the feline equivalents of Jack Spratt and the missus: Pix is so thin we try to feed him whenever he's interested. Penny is a tub, although she's been on a diet for almost a year and is much more active now, but it's a constant effort to keep her from eating Pix's leftovers. LOL She's hoping the baby robins will come down to play. ;)

Happy Sunday!

Dear God!

True Blood has the longest freakin' opening credits I've ever seen! Thank god for Tivo and dvds. I really enjoy the show, though. It's been so long since I read the first book that I forgot who did it. I found the dvds on sale at Target a few days ago and am looking forward for the start of season two tomorrow night. Michelle Forbes is the Maenad! Outstanding cast. The pretty young guy who plays Jason is from Australia and has been on several of the classic Aussie shows such as Water Rats and A Country Practice. He probably knows Claudia. The actress who played Dawn is going to play Dejah Thoris in the ERB/John Carter/Mars stories movie that's being made. Terry is played by the actor who played Zach (Lane's husband) on Gilmore Girls. I knew he looked familiar!

Nurse Jackie so far reads as 'female House with sex', but I love her already. Like House, she's a chronic pain patient-cum-drug addict who does and says what we in the medical community wish we could, forging a signature on an organ donor card after a young, healthy man is killed, flushing the ear of a man who sliced up a hooker. Unlike House, she's not only intellectually involved: she really cares about her patients. And,unlike House, she's sleeping with the pharmacist to get her Vicodin. It just wouldn't be HBO with out the sex.

ION, three baby robins in the nest!! \o/

Chessie got into a bag of dog food left out by SH a couple of days ago. She looked like a sausage with legs by the time she finished and pooped every time she went out for about 24 hours. It was pretty darned funny.

No beer so I've opened a bottle of wine. Life is good. *g*

Don’t take too long to think about it. Fifteen books you’ve read that will always stick with you. First fifteen you can recall in 15 minutes. Copy the instructions into your own note.

1. Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand
2. The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien. He originally intended it to be one long book and so I will count it as one. The publishers insisted it be broken up into three volumes.
3. I Will Fear No Evil by Robert Heinlein
4. The Fifth Sacred Thing by Starhawk
5. To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis
6. The Zero Stone by Andre Norton
7. The Number of the Beast by Robert Heinlein
8. The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein
9. The Dragon Reborn by Robert Jordan
10. Moon of Three Rings by Andre Norton
11. The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum
12. Little, Big by John Crowley
13. The Lensman Series by E. E. 'Doc' Smith. OK, this is more than one book but I'm going to count it as one.
14. The Doomsday Book by Connie Willis
15. Judgement on Janus by Andre Norton

I started this list at Panera this morning but the wifi kept stalling so I finished it this afternoon at home, but I did not cheat and look at my bookshelves, though I will admit the last few were tough calls. And damn! I need to reread Little, Big ASAP!

And now, for your entertainment pleasure, a meme for fic: Name fifteen fics that will always stick with you.

1.
Well, so much for NCIS and beer.

#2Son comes in, turns on the lights in the bathroom, and starts examining his throat in the mirror. "Mom, come look at my sore throat." Oh, goody. Exudative pharyngitis, indicative of either strep or mono. "I was up all night, it hurt so bad." *sigh*

Quick scramble to look for an OSU Urgent Care, because I knew a few of them had been transformed into simple Family Practice offices, meaning you have to have an appointment and they close at five. Since it was already five, I was not sanguine about our chances of being seen. I finally called the ER and asked if they saw urgent care patients there. They do, and guess what? There are no more OSU Urgent Care places. Period. WTF? The hospital system and OSU-insured population must be over 250,000 in Central Ohio alone and they don't have a fucking Urgent Care anywhere?

So we schlepped off to the ER, walked out to the car again to leave a parking pass, waited for about 90 minutes. The doc who saw him was someone I'd worked with during my ER rotation my first month of residency, someone I'd liked a lot (Not THAT way! Get your minds out of the gutter!!) so I had to introduce myself. Naturally, he didn't remember me. It's only been 24 years. LOL But he was eminently wise and didn't even bother with a strep screen as, even if it was negative, he was going to treat him anyway. I love wise doctors. (That's how I found my own doctor. She said, "You've been sick for a week and waiting for three hours. You're getting antibiotics.")

Then we dashed to the in-hospital Walgreens to get the scrip filled before closing. Now we're home, Cart's had his penicillin and a couple of Percocets to ensure sleep, I've finished my beer and missed both NCIS and Nurse Jackie, and I'm ready for bed. Living the dream, people. Living the dream!

Some time. "Let's get together, yeah yeah yeah." May your day be filled with cake and presents and whorled peas. ;)

Points about ME!:

1) kerlin, why the heck didn't you tell me that there's a new Mary Russell book??? I squeed in Borders! I am currently eyeing it with lust but planning to wait 'til vacation to read it. Although that may change...

2) I read the 2nd Sookie Sackhouse book yesterday, one of the books that HBO's True Blood (which I haven't seen) is based on. I was floored. The first book I found to be so bad as to be almost unreadable, not the actual writing so much as I didn't like any of the characters. Or the story line. At all. The second book could have been written by another author. I was astounded. And happy that I now have a whole series to read at the beach next month.

3) I also bought the first No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency book as I fell in love with the characters via the HBO series. Thank you, kernezelda!! Yet another series to read on the beach. \o/

4) Read John Levitt's first two 'wizard with dog' books, Dog Days and New Tricks. Both were enjoyable magical mystery tours and one reviewer compared them favorably with Jim Butcher's books, but I haven't read those and cannot support the comparison. Next one's not due out 'til the end of the year. *pout*

5) I believe the new Janet Evanovich is due out tomorrow. SQUEE! That will most likely NOT remain unread until the end of July. I need my Lula and Grandma Mazur fixes. And Stephanie, of course.

6) The computer died in #2Son's Jeep and so he is carless for a week. This will entail a bit of scrambling, swapping, switching, and sharing but with five of us sharing four cars, we should be okay. *fingers crossed* He has finals this week so he won't need a car 24 hours of the day. It's not like he has a job or anything. *eyeroll*

7) I will not plant any more plants this year. I will not plant any more plants this year. I will not plant any more plants this year. I will not plant any more plants this year. I will not plant any more plants this year. I will not plant any more plants this year.

8) I have baby robins! Well, I saw mama bird feeding baby robins in the nest she built on the pergola above my deck. It's hard to get the right angle to see them until the parents are there to feed 'em. Damn, those little things have huge mouths! Anyway, I counted two mouths.

I'm sure I have more to share but my brain is fried. Is it time for NCIS reruns and beer yet?

Any suggestions from my better educated, illustrious friends? All of my ideas seem to contain four-letter words and that, while sadly representative of my earthy approach to life, doesn't seem appropriate as a by-line for my blog.

ION, I'm in the hospital all night long but off tomorrow (if I survive the night, that is) and the weather is supposed to be delightfully sunny and warm. It will be a nice break before I'm on call all f*cking weekend. *sigh*

For the record, a few thoughts:

1) I hate Fox with a deep and abiding passion. They have yet to prove to me that they aren't complete and utter morons.

2) There's never a terminator around when you need one. Except for Fox, which terminates every genre show before its time.

3) Fox, you suck.

4) If that t-shirt that says "I'd rather be watching shows Fox cancelled" didn't list That 80s Show, I'd be tempted to buy it. I may have to make my own.

5) Fox, you still suck.
