Thor: Love and Thunder took all the wrong lessons from Thor: Ragnarok and told a nonsensical story that prioritized comedy over plot and gave no one any meaningful arcs or dialogue, its central villain being the worst offender of this and one of the worst villains in the MCU. Add in the ugly visuals, and the Thor franchise hits its absolute lowest with Thor: Ragnarok to the point of desperately needing another major retooling.
As a Taika Waititi fan, I had really high hopes for Thor: Love and Thunder. Man, was I let down. This feels disogranized and shallow, lacking the genuine humor that Ragnarok had. Wish Waititi could have done better by this one!
While there's some solid emotional beats and jokes, this movie just feels like a let-down. It veers too much into the sillier side of things and fails to fully explore its themes of divinity and mortality. The cast is able to uplift some truly uninteresting dialogue, and the action can be okay, but ultimately its potential feels wasted.
This just isn't a very good movie and a massive step down from the previous one which I also didn't even care for that much. The jokes are too bland and drawn out. Looks horrific. Seems like no one cared about the film they were making this time around.
I don't hate this film as much as most people do, maybe because of my bias towards Natalie Portman's Jane Foster. I was just so glad that she finally got redemption after her abysmal previous MCU arc. The plot is undoubtedly all over the place and clearly tries to recreate the magic of Ragnarok to limited success, but I do think there are still some decently entertaining moments.
I really disliked Thor: Love and Thunder and I was really disappointed because I loved Thor: Ragnarok and was excited to see what Taika Waititi did with this movie. The plot was not very high-stakes and felt almost boring at times, the writing was bland, and it felt like the movie relied more on cheap gags than the genuine, hilarious comedy that can be seen in the first Waititi directed Thor film.
I don't hate Thor: Love and Thunder as much as it seems most MCU fans do. I do, however, find the tone of the movie uneven, and that's what makes it so off-putting. It tries to hold onto the same humor of the last Thor movie, but everything here feels like it should be more dramatic and grounded instead of shooting from the hip. I did enjoy getting to see Jane and Valkyrie interact since they're from two very different times in Thor's life, but I wish this movie had a more even keel.
A surprising miss for Taika Waititi, Thor: Love and Thunder has the same sense of humor as Thor: Ragnarok, but with more confidence and self-indulgence that ultimately work against it. The movie struggles with stakes because of how little it takes seriously, and while Thor's inner pain is palpable, Gorr the God Butcher doesn't feel like he contributes to the story or larger metaphor - he's just the bad guy who happened to turn up this time.
