I will make a general Lost finale post, eventually. This is for my thoughts about the last ten minutes of the episode. I loved it. Some people didn't. This is my attempt at explaining what I thought it was, with the caveats that 1. I was watching through a haze of tears and 2. I am a little tipsy, so I may have missed important things.

The way I see it: the flash-sideways timeline was not capital-p Purgatory; but it was a purgatory of their own creation. The best analogy I can draw is if you've played Silent Hill 2, you know how in the end you discover that all the monsters and Maria were James's way of dealing with his disgust with himself? The flash-sideways was how the people on the plane dealt with their problems, except they dealt with them constructively. It wasn't just irony that made Sawyer a cop, or that had Ben save Alex (and become a surrogate father to her).

Now as for why some people were in heaven and some weren't. On his show, Jimmy Kimmel suggested that the moment of turbulence in LA X, when Jack was clutching the armrest, was a few seconds in which Jack experienced, in some blink-of-an-eye subliminal way, everything that happened in the "real" timeline. From the moment he woke up in the bamboo to the moment he laid down and closed his eyes. When Rose looked over and told him he could let go, that was the beginning of the new life he created for himself. He gave himself a son so he could know that he wasn't his father, nor was he the man his father treated him like. He created a former relationship with Juliet to atone for their strained relationship on the island. He fixed Locke, because he was feeling guilt over having never appreciated or believed in him while he was still alive. etc, etc.

And that applied to every single person on the plane. From the ones who died quickly, like Boone and Shannon, to the ones who stayed on the island for a long time, like Ben and Hurley (more on that in a bit). Eventually they died with unresolved issues and were drawn to each other in this in-between place where they tried to change their fates, starting with the plane crash.

From what I can tell, the only people in heaven were:

1. The people on the plane, in the original timeline (most everyone)
2. The people who sacrificed their lives for the island. (Ben - because he worked as Hurley's number 2, Juliet, Desmond)

The only exception is Penny. I guess they didn't want to show Des without her. And Christian Shephard, although I suppose you could rationalize it; his last thoughts in the Australian dive bar were of the son he never cared for, and he couldn't reach closure until Jack did.

As for what happened to Richard, Miles, Frank, Charlotte, and Daniel, I suppose they didn't have anything to let go of, because they settled themselves on the island. Evidence of this could be that Charlotte and Daniel interacted, but didn't flash off each other; they were only there to move along Charlie, Desmond, and Sawyer's plots.

The Richard, Miles, and Frank thing gets more confusing. Richard and Frank didn't appear in the flash sideways, so I guess we can assume that they had no need for resolution. Miles did, but - as best I can remember - he only appeared in connection to other people. He was there to facilitate James's story and to listen when James needed to confess about Sawyer. (TOTALLY UNRELATED, back in the real timeline, I ship Richard/Miles 4reals. Their scenes were totally cute. I choose to believe they hung out afterward.) buongiornodaisy made a really beautiful point in her journal about the fact that Richard's storyline was initially about his will to die, and in the end became about his discovery of wanting to live. And that's what he got. That's why he didn't have to appear in the flash sideways. Just like Lapidus resolved his guilt over missing the 815 flight by taking them home, and Miles resolved his anger toward his father by seeing that Dr. Chang actually saved them. Charlotte found the island and the odd man who warned her of it as a child. Daniel I'm unsure about - his issue was so twisty and turny that I'm not sure how he could resolve it, unless the reset itself ended it - so there's possibly another loose end.

As for some more unanswered questions:

What happened to Hurley and Ben? They must have given up at some point and let the island go and let themselves die. Did they pass it on to a new generation of protectors?

What about the survivors who weren't in the episode? Either they had already reached closure, or they were still in purgatory. For example, we saw Ana Lucia, who was a plane crash survivor, in the sideways. Was she a creation of Desmond's mind, to pull him out of a tight scrape? Or was she really there, still trying to atone for what she'd done wrong? Same with Michael, Walt, Eko, even Nikki & Paulo. Obviously some of this is because of actor availability but you have to wonder if some of these omissions were purposeful as well.

How the hell did Desmond traverse between the timelines? I guess this would suggest that the constructed timeline was as "real" as the real timeline... which is pretty trippy to think about. Reality, it's like, in your head man.

What was Ben's unresolved business? I took this as him simply being unready to face his curtain call, perhaps a mixture of both cowardice and a desire to experience the normal life he'd never known before. However maybe I missed something more important.

Alright, let me know if this entry makes any sense at all and feel free to nitpick away at it. I might update it when I've rewatched the episode.

I wrote on Tumblr that I would probably not finish my Lost gender-flip spam in time to post it on picspammy, but I got it done anyway! \o/ I hope everyone enjoys it. It's pretty straightforward, my only real guideline was that I wanted to pick actors/actresses who were at least somewhat likely to appear on a TV show, although I did stretch that rule a little when there were picks I didn't want to change.

Otherwise, I played fast and loose with age, race, and physical resemblence. I wanted to choose someone who would do justice rather to the character instead of someone who had a physical resemblance but didn't fit the character. Which brings me to why there's no Eko. I didn't know any African actresses and I didn't want to just Google "Nigerian actresses" and stick one of my favorite characters with someone whose talent I can't judge, so... in imaginary!Lost we'll just say there's an open casting call for that role.

Simple enough. Great actress who could pull off the lead role with aplomb.

Jamie Bamber as Chris Austen

"Here we go again, huh?"

This was difficult. It's hard to put a finger on what makes Kate Kate. I settled on Bamber because he can play emotional as well as badass.

Christina Hendricks as Jane Ford

"There's a new sherrif in town, girls. I suggest y'all get used to it."

Christina Hendricks with a southern accent, swinging a gun around, being sarcastic and self-destructive, wearing half-buttoned blue shirts. Enough said.

Mary McDonnell as Joanne Locke

"I've looked into the eye of the island, and what I saw was beautiful."

Locke and Roslin (especially season 2 Roslin) are quite similar in many ways, and I think she'd get what makes Locke such a vital character to the show.

Joan Allen as Beatrice Linus

"If you mean time travelling bunnies, then yes."

Talk about tough shoes to step into. I figure Allen's Beatrice wouldn't be the same as Emerson's Ben, but would be equally engrossing as Lost's most morally gray character.

Jon Hamm as Julian Burke

"The last thing either of you need right now is more blood on your hands."

So much of Juliet is wrapped up in Elizabeth Mitchell's performance. Hamm can bring that same range: from emotional to restrained to pitiful to forceful. (LOL I just realized this would mean Don shacking up with Joan in season 5. Total coincidence.) And, well, yeah. With Mr. Hamm, I know that my favorite character would continue to be my favorite character, gender-flipping aside.

Shohreh Aghdashloo as Saida Jarrah

"Part of my training entailed getting the enemy to communicate."

Yes she's a bit older than Sayid but I had to include her. Just imagine her giving the epic "I am a torturer" speech and you'll know what I mean.

Gaborey Sidibe as Hannah Reyes

"I wanna do a cannonball. I've been walking up and down this beach every day and looking out at this water. And I wanna do a cannonball."

We already know she can be damn funny. I kept the last name cause eh, she could have a Hispanic family.

Rose Byrne as Desdemona Hume

"I have to get my honor back. That's what I'm running to."

Wrong accent, I know. :P

Tony Leung as Xuan Zhuang

Technically she had a small role in Lost ("The Glass Ballerina"), but since that was gonna be gender-flipped along with everyone else, might as well cast her elsewhere!

I know what you're saying. I switched out the cute little blonde for Stringer Bell?!?! But hear me out on this. He can play sensitive and good-natured, as well as crazy evil and unpredictable. Badass + badass. I struggled a lot until I remembered Fehr, I haven't seen him much since Sleeper Cell ended but he was quite good ~~and disturbingly hot when you consider the subject matter~~ and he'd make a good Ilan.

Reiko Aylesworth as Rachel Alpert

A more out-there pick, and of course they'd have to change Richard's backstory since she isn't Spanish, but she's just as gorgeous as Nestor Carbonell and would bring justice to the enigmatic character with her tragic backstory. (Aylesworth also had a small part on the show, but we can assume that'd be recast as well.)

Asia Argento as the Woman in Black

Tilda Swinton as Esther

Maybe predictable? Maybe out there? (Hard to imagine Swinton doing network TV...) But just picture her as Jacob, mysterious, wisdom-imparting, totally stoned Jacob. Or Esther, as the case may be: I thought it was fitting for the character, and maybe the WiB's name can turn out to be Vashti.

So I've been working on a project for the month before the Lost finale. Starting on April 23, I'll post a song on my tumblr each day that reminds me of the show and an artwork, and then in the end I'll collect it all on LJ to make one big fanmix.

Look at me guys, actually entering a picspammy challenge! The very last day! Ahem. I wanted to do something Lost-related, since it is the Fandom of My Heart and no more so than right now in the throes of its last season. Originally, I planned on doing something Juliet-related, but most of the ideas seemed to be taken. Then I considered "Top 5 Juliet crack!ships", but realized that most of them would involve explaining who the characters were and why I found them interesting enough to pair with her. Then I realized that what I really wanted to do was expound upon the characters who didn't get enough love... thus... this idea. My top five "supporting" Lost characters.

Secondary or supporting characters in expansive works have always been an interest of mine. They're usually included to move the plot along, or spell out a theme for the audience; but sometimes they can exceed their role and become scene-stealers interesting enough to rival the primary stars. Part of that is 'cause of the actors: no matter how talented you are, if you're not young/sexy/marketable you end up doing a lot of supporting work - just see Terry O'Quinn and Michael Emerson's pre-Lost filmographies. And part of it is 'cause the show's production team have more freedom writing them, and I think they take the opportunity to write a character who isn't wrapped up in manpain/angst/convoluted storylines and roll with it. But maybe the most fascinating thing is that we know so little about these characters. Often, they show up with only half-explained motives and are either killed off before we get to know them or disappear into the writers' box of plot devices. Instead of being annoying, as these circumstances would be with a purported main character (cough, Libby) it only makes them more ~intriguing.

Lost is, to put it mildly, an expansive work, and it's got no lack of supporting actors: on the island, in flashbacks, in flash-forwards, and in altered timelines. With a few Bai Ling-shaped exceptions, I'd say they've done a damn good job of casting these characters and using them to augment the primary storylines. Some of these characters, especially the ones who have been around for a while, appeared enough and accrued enough goodwill from fans to basically be primary characters: Danielle, Rose & Bernard, and Richard (who actually became a main character) come to mind. However I wanted to cover the five characters I love who are probably a "huh? oh, him/her" to the casual fan. Despite not having their own storylines and flashbacks, they all made the show that much more interesting for their presence.

The Marshal

Let's get the ball rolling with a character who's intrigued me since episode one: Edward Mars. Part of that is because I have a HUGE thing for this straight-shooting "always gets his (wo)man" Eliot Ness crimefighting archetype (ask me about US ATTORNEY PATRICK FITZGERALD~ sometime), but also: dude! He tracked Kate everywhere. He tracked her to AUSTRALIA. I'm certain we'll never get full closure on this, but there are so many unanswered questions about why the hell he went through so much trouble just to catch a one-time criminal. And boy did he go through trouble. Even more curiously, he offered to end his crusade if Kate really could settle down with Nathan Fillion. We all know how that worked out (not so good), but hell if it wasn't another interesting aspect of one of Lost's more morally ambiguous supporting characters.

Cassidy

Part of my appreciation for this character is the fact that she's played by Kim Dickens, a woefully underrated actress who really needs to appear in more things. But I also love how she was sort of Kate 1.0 for Sawyer. As far as we can tell, she was the first woman who Sawyer worked with, and who made a formidable foil. Granted, he took advantage of her and left her -- but she got him back by getting his ass in the clink. Hee hee. I also love that she and Kate bonded before and after the crash. Besides doing their part to make "Left Behind" the Slashiest Episode Ever, their similarities made her the perfect person to exposit on Sawyer/Kate's relationship in "Whatever Happened, Happened".

(Sidenote: since I've just covered Cassidy & the marshal, let me point out that since no one knows how she tracked down Sawyer, my personal canon is totally that the two of them hooked up and went on the chase together for a while.)

Keamy

You know what I said about moral ambiguity? Weeeeeell sometimes you just need a complete monster, and I love that they had a character who was unambiguously straight-up no-bullshit shoot-a-teenage-girl kicking-puppies stealing-candy-from-babies EVIL. By the time he met his end on the wrong side on a dagger courtesy one raging Ben Linus, it was hard not to wonder what the hell took so long. That said, there are two things that make him one of my favorite minor characters: one, this more-than-slightly amazing fanfic, which manages to flesh out his character while also making him remain pretty damn scary (so go read it) (seriously) and two, dat body. unf, you guys. unf.

Naomi

Aww I love Naomi. Gone too soon! I love how she had this outer shell of cute spunkiness concealing her cutthroat special ops side. And much as "Henry Gale"'s debut in Season 2 began a new chapter of the show where people yelling at each other about buttons gave way to mythology about four-toed statues and our introduction to the creepos who stole Walt, so did Naomi's appearance herald the moment that Lost stopped futzing around and started getting ~real~ as we realized that holy shit they're actually gonna get home, what. Would have been nice to get more backstory as her double-death (knifed in the back by Locke... but she still jumped Kate after falling out of a tree!), but aside from her few outside world appearances, there's very little we know about her. Who knows what she was truly like? Unless she makes a surprise season 6 appearance, we can only speculate.

Patchy

Because he is an indestructible vaguely-Soviet eyepatched cat-owning gymnastics-appreciating killing machine. What the hell more do you WANT? If you didn't fall in love at first sight, I don't know what to tell you. If you don't love this character, I judge you. IDK what Darlton say, I believe that after being zapped til his brain bleeds, beat up by Jin, beat up by Locke, shot with a harpoon, and blowing himself up with a grenade to kill Charlie (woot), he is alive and well somewhere. And totally plotting his evil revenge. Unlike Naomi I really want no more of his backstory. He needs no characterization. He just needs to go and kill more useless characters while getting beat up a lot. Know why? Because he's Patchy.
