068: Tutorial requested by kailorien

Here is a tutorial that kailorien requested!!

---

Before you start, this icon looks best on women, because of how soft their skin comes out. Or girly looking men. Like Orlando Bloom as Legolas. You get the picture.

01.
Pick an image. This icon looks best when the backdrop for the character is fairly simple, such as ocean and sky. I chose Shannon from LOST because she is my favorite character on the show.

02. --
Crop it so that the character is far to one side, preferably with a shoulder or something in the picture. Sharpen it once.

03.
Give the skin an air-brushed look by using the SOFTEN tool, with a density of 50. Avoid eyes and skin, but be sure to get as close to them as possible for that flawless look.

04.
Sharpen it again, go over the lips and eyes with the sharpening tool if you're moved to do so. I just go over the lips in these icons. It kind of looks like crap now, but be patient!!

05.
Add two new layers. The top one should be SOFT LIGHT at 34 and the middle one should be SCREEN at 52.

06. ---
This is my favorite color to use on icons. Layer it on top of everything else at SATURATION at 20. It'll look like the image on the right.

07.
Now do Brightness/Contrast. Brightness: 5 Contrast: 3

08.
Take a circle of just the character's face, then shrink it to 50% and sharp it. Just set it to the side for now.

09. ---
Take this lovely texture by ewanism and rotate it as needed so that it's in the emptiest corner of the icon. Set it as a new layer as LIGHTEN. Move it around so that it's only overlapping the character's face a little.

10.
Time to grab the small circle again. Copy and paste it onto the icon, and while it's still selected color the entire thing in BLACK. Cut it (CTRL + X) and paste it as a new layer (CTRL + L). Merge the two layers.

11.
Mirror the circle image if you want, I didn't because Shannon is facing left on the left side of the icon. Paste the circle so a little bit of the shadow shows. It gives it a 3D effect. V. nice.

12.
Add whatever words you want, I just did her name because that's my name, too haha. I also added some tiny text because tiny text is LOVE. I used a paintbrush that I made myself.
Here it is in case you want it:

Tiny text should be put as a new layer, I put the opacity at 46.

I hope that was helpful...it's only my second tutorial.
Please take a look at my last entry, too {H|E|R|E}.
