Suspicious Comments and Spam Comments

found this on digitalmeowmix2's journal, since Livejournal saw fit to never add a word of it to faq. If you mod or maintain a community, it gets to be highly obnoxious since you never get a notice about the comments being marked suspicious.

So I've been noticing in both my own journal and communities that I haven't been able to see some comments even thought it says there are more comments there than are actually showing up. Instead I'm getting a place holder that says (Spam comment) or (Suspicious comment).

Why are these showing up like this you may ask? In their rush to fight spam LJ has created a new filter that're AUTOMATICALLY TURNED ON in ALL journals and communities, which screens comments that are made with 'suspicious links' ie links that are not on their safe whitelist, so pretty much the majority of the internet. There is no noted way to add to the 'whitelist'.

What really gets me is that they didn't inform people that they were doing this until a week after it was done and that it was automatically turned on.

So how do I turn it off you might ask.

That's simple. Go to your Settings, click on the Privacy tab, and half way down where it says Spam Protection uncheck the box next to "Comments containing a link to a non-whitelisted domain will be marked as spam and moved to a special section." This applies to both personal journal and communities and the opinion has to be manually changed in each one.

While I understand how this could be a good idea, I think they went about it in a very backhanded way, and have implemented it poorly. There was no message to anyone that the link has been screened. It's automatically done. This went on for over a week before they said anything about it. There is still nothing in the FAQs about it even. The only way I found out about this way going through the support pages where people were reporting similar issues.

Hey look, a proper post

Yes, I do still remember this is hear. Like many it seems I've been neglecting LJ. Have gotten to points of neglecting the internet at times. Spending time shuffling through other things- reading, gaming, sims, genealogy, cross stitch, vegging to massive marathons of SVU and Stargate Atlantis and pixeling.

Last couple weeks I've been monitoring in Orange County, which means driving in to start at 7, with small periods of actual digging, in between long stretches of waiting. And the best thing to do is read, especially since there wasn't any good unsecured wireless connections ;) So I got myself a Nook Color (also so can take if I go and use my free flight vouchers). I think I love the thing. So much nicer than the ipad my dad claims is for my mom (and he loads with all his crap). Now hopefully some of the magazines I like will be available soon on the Nook (which is why I wanted color)

Almost gone and done it. Been a while. Took a vacation to see grandparents. Found out that my grandfather had gone into the hospital. Basically he wasn't doing exactly what his doctor told him to do (last year his bladder was removed due to cancer), so things were backing up on him, literally. So didn't do all that much while I was there since grandad was having trouble. We did go out to Wingfoot Lake State PArk, which used to be Goodyear employee park. There is still a blimp hangar there, and the blimp was out taking spins, and it landed while we were there. Then visited grandma in NC, and got a bit sidelined by a migraine (bad place to get one), and things took so long to get moving, we rarely left the house before noon. Don't know if this works for y'all, but Album of pictures or first picture. If not, I'll post some later when at my desktop.

As expected, not going to make 100 books this year. Currently at 35 (two were rereads), which is past last years amount, but I'm sure page count is equivalent to some peoples 100 books read list. Been joining some of the shelfari's groups monthly reads and am trying to reconnect with the library.

Currently I'm watching my youngest nephew, and the other, when he's done with school. Bro's daycare person has jury duty today and next monday, so I shall be here. Currently am being tortured by Spongebob Squarepants, which rates near Barney, high on the obnoxious meter.

Have to go leave my Jeep at the dealer tomorrow. Apparently the mysterious noise was the sound of the rear end bearings dying, so they are supposed to replace them tommorrow. I think I'm going to blame the site bringer of bad news. First time I visited the site, I go to leave in the morning and my TPS is going off, and I find a screw in the offending tire. So I borrowed the folk's Jeep (which I will beat in mileage within the year > <), so my visits, then take the tire to be fixed later. Four months, later, now the bearings. Which is the first time someone else has been near/in the Jeep when its done it (usually only when Jeep is cold). Got to fix it now, and not risk it failing next week, when I have to go out to Fort Irwin, which is in the middle of nowhere, mojave desert. Need to be there about 8am, since we have to take a 9am class before we can go on the range to the site. Which means I should leave the house about 5am to get there on time, on a Monday...... Not much doing. Watching the dog, so usually spend dinner time watching tv with her, because woe is her if she doesn't get her routine. So I spend time bumming around internet or entering info from the family books into the family file. Tres exciting, no?

If anyone sees any Haven or Pillars of the Earth icons about, please point me in their direction. Having trouble finding good ones for those shows.

I don't get the current trend of multiple repeated small images in one icon, so it is, for lack of a better term, a clusterfuck of itty bitty little character clones. Makes less sense than the red blob of doom.

Have to be in Compton at 8am, so have to be off with nothing much of substance.

Oh look, I did a Mer. Its been how long since I last posted. In summary:

- Birthday. Got the Percy Jackson books and devoured those. So glad he's revisiting them this fall.

- Went up to San Francisco for work. Was totally not conditioned for walking around San Fran's hills, so did no site seeing at all. Unless you count seeing Golden Gate Bridge from a hill and parking structure.

- Since office was last minute buying ticket, I got bumped from my flight back, so now have some vouchers for where ever I want to go that airline flies.

- Work has varied from insane to calm. Insane usually involving San Francisco projects. Y'all have an idea how old San Fran is? Then having to find how many historic buildings are within a half mile of a certain point. some areas near 1,000 buildings having been evaluated for National and California Register significance.

-Folks been having renovations done, including a new garage for my dad's radio and trailer crap. They went away while I was dog sitting for a neighbor, so had to watch our big dog too. But the work in the back wore down parts of the dirt trailer side parking, so the dog would escape while I was away, howl her woes to the neighbors, and played peeping tom looking in the neighbor's son's window. But she would squish back under before I came back, and only found out when the neighbor said something the last night.

-Yay for summer tv! Watched or listened to as much World Cup as I could (next on will rock since in Brazil). And summer dramas are so much better than fall tv. Really enjoying Covert Affairs and Haven. Pillars of the Earth seems like a pretty good translation so far.

- Will be taking first real vacation in a while. Going back east to see my grandparents. Haven't seen them since I was in Savannah, so should be good.

- I started rebuilding my family tree from scratch. All I can say is I am, genealogically speaking, old German mutt. Have lots of german, spanish, scottish, dutch, native american, english, french, formerly Checkoslovakia area (documents say Slovakland?), and supposedly some Welsh too. So many more documents and transcriptions online now, for free.

- Pooh broke another tooth, below the gum line, so she gets to go to the vet again. Might take her to the closer, all animal one, instead of just cat one. Mom always has complained about their prices (at cat hospital), and I'm not sure how good a job they did cleaning her teeth last year when she broke a tooth, which may have made a difference

- I am still alive. Just a bit of an lazy book reading app zombie.

- Had a hankering to sim, so created a new Sims 2 founder (doubt I remember much about the older ones). Played through first baby, which was about when found got secret lot membership....and she can't access the Hobby lot at all. One reference to similar problem is game corruption, which sucks since it was the clean copy of Veronaville after reinstalling after rebuild. Which means uninstalling and reinstalling. Since new family is new, was going to just start over on her. But what to do on the old legacies? Snows are done, and Riverblossom Hills probably could use the clean family. But Bonnets, Morzans and whoever the hell the one legacy challenge one was are all incomplete. Probably could do without the one legacy challenge one, but the others I'm not sure on. Haven't played either in about a year. And most are already packaged so could restart anywhere new if wanted. Thoughts?

- Looked at Sims 3 store to see recent additions, and now want to make a run on things. Though may want a fresh start there too.

- Starting a slow process of weeding down my boxes of books in loft. Putting it to my advantage by reading ones unread before getting rid of them, as far as the 100 aim goes.

- Nothing much of significance. Loving to PS3, if most of the time its used as a bluray player (tend to not notice when 2hrs pass when playing Assassin's Creed). Now completely spoiled on hd & bluray, so want to upgrade normal dvd player to an upconverting one (current is almost 9yr old model). Because would hate to kill PS3 by movies, like Bro and SIL did with his XBox.

Since the last time I post, I've been an app zombie. I'm trying to ween away from some, and just say no to more farms and animals

Then the week before Thanksgiving went crazy for work, filling in for the LA/OC people, which I am still trying to catch up from. Hopefully I can get a dent in it tomorrow. Got the other counties caught up, so just mammoth reports for Downtown to finish assembling.

And the last week I've been obsessing a bit on Syfy's Alice. I loved it. Much better than Tin Man, which I liked when I watched it, but rewatching the rerun today, it felt a little more forced and doing too much, when compared to Alice (done by the same people). So I've been hunting icons and fanart on DA for the show (points to icon). Might actually try making something again.

For now, I think its decided not to get a guinea pig. Already have to keep up with litter boxes used by 3 cats, and a fish tank, and not probably enough space to give the pig what it should have. But maybe another time.

I did finally cave signed up for facebook to see if could find some folks from high school (since whoever planned the reunion are a bunch of holes who can does something like mail to the last known address). This is me. If you add me let me know your name, or add a note. Though I mostly waste my time with games when I should be working (instead of wasting them on the Windows games).

Have to go. Watching the dog for my folks and she is just a cow at times. Whiniest, needy, spoiled thing she is. Doesn't do things when she is supposed to so wakes me up at all times of the night (plus she has abandoment issues and is afraid of the dark, so sleeping in a room by herself is just TOO CRUEL in her mind). These times remind me why I like cats better.

Guinea Pig

There was a very pretty Guinea Pig at the pet store today when Mom and I were out. Girl at the store thought he was a year or two old, and that he'd been surrendered to the store. Red and white, albino eyes. Almost as big as the rabbits he was in with. So we were debating him. I think the nephews would like helping with him and watching him, but would have to weigh more where would the cage fit, and checking up on behavior a bit more (like a single male, would he try to mark) before we decide.

Not much going on. I've been reading like crazy, haven't been motivated for much more lately. Finally reading through all Narnia. Also read Mistress of the Art of Death, which is very good. It reminded me very much of the Temperance Brennan series, except it is set in the Medieval period.

Been stalking the Mount Wilson camera over the weekend, because it was a different perspective for fire coverage. This is the peak where all the main transmitters for tv and radio stations are, and some cell sites. Plus the obeservatory where Hubble did some of his research on the big bang theory (did not know this). But this afternoon the camera went out (they think the backfires got to the electrical) so don't even have that to watch. Plus the winds changed and started blowing smoke and ash over the valleys today.

I'm also taking any PS3 game recommendations. Since Sony finally came to their senses and lowered the price, I will get one by Christmas Day (I think I have worn down the folks to get it from them, if nothing else). Since I've been pretty much an Nintendo girl, I'm not too familiar with the games on other platforms. I know I want Assassin's Creed, and some of the games featured at E3 like Gods of War and Dante's Inferno look cool, but what else is worth the price? I'm not really interested in the games where you have to raise/collect critters (sims is probably the closest I'll get), but I don't think PS3 has many of those type games. Will have to go back through pokecharm's game reviews too

I think I have managed to solve the green/purple tint on my satalitte signal. Every so often everything would go purple or green, and only the satellite signal (even tv menu came up right), and go to be happening daily last week. So I updated the firmware on Sunday, and it has not happened since so fingers crossed. But it made me realise that I have no flyin fart in space of a clue where my flash drive has gone. Had to borrow one of Dad's to do the firmware update. Worse is, the last time that I definitely remember having the thing is before Christmas when I rebuilt the computer. I may have had it sometime after, because I remembered considering taking Dinotop and the flash drive with me incase I had to kill time between an info center visit and a late site visit, but I don't think anything came of that. So likely it got hidden REALLY well when I shifted furniture around earlier this year. So I have to clean = | Gives me something to do until Guitar Hero comes - I caved at the free Van Halen game.

Done this before, but so far this is the lightest tv watching list I've had. But it all looks so boring or redundant
Monday- Castle, and Chuck when it starts in MARCH
Tuesday- Might try NCIS: Los Angeles, but most of it looks pretty lack luster
Wednesday- Again lack luster. Might get back into SVU
Thursday- Bones
Friday- Can't get excited about it either. Might go for L&O and Ugly Betty, but kind of eh on Betty now
Saturday- Robin Hood & Legend of the Seeker
Sunday- looks boring

Network tv looks very pathetic by what I've heard so far. CW has gone completely vapid teen girl shit from the looks. Summer season is pretty good, but most of it is because of the cable channels. Not sure how long any of these are going besides Merlin which probably only has a few weeks left. This summer I've been watching:

Haven't felt like posting much since very nearly had panic attack last week. Some of the companies clients haven't been paying them promptly, so they in turn haven't been paying us (well atleast us contractors) regularly. Luckily the note sent about not working if no money resulted in us cell site folk getting some checks sent. I just refuse to keep pulling from my savings to pay for gas and related work expenses when they aren't paying people on a regular basis. Hopefully the economy has gotten its kick in the but so our clients can be better at paying, and will be more work around. I generally like the job when getting paid- sometimes paid to be a tourist, work from home and minimal human contact

BBCAmerica launched its HD channel, and it was supposed to be a happy tv time. Except they had no contracts with any cable or satellite companies to carry the thing before hand, so no shiny hd sci fi shows for anyone. Been checking twitter and the BBCAmerica boards and none of the major carriers have it, and reports that none do. Big, Major Fail, especially since the pushed Torchweek probably one of their top viewed shows. I'm doing a twitter campaign, but need to wrangle Dad into calling since its under his name. I've been waiting for this HD channel since first started teasing for it 2 years ago.

I need a new way to write up legacies. Doing updates is a chore and boring, and when I remember to take pictures, it just feels like a succession of birthdays, promotions, mixed with deaths and the hey new stuff! Just need to figure how to do a sort of minimalist update with as few pictures as necessary, otherwise I'll just post a tree and the sims for download. Maybe once something is done where the active family will initiate the early romantic behaviors autonomously it will be more interesting for me to write up, but not now. Playing is just funner, and trying out all the new things. Mad Scientists are awesome. Though I think at some point I'll go back and do a pixel trade in 2, because I don't think it would work as well in Sims 3, since you would have to repopulate each generation, unless you just initially populated the town with pixel trade sims, and used descendants

*pets shiny Permanent account* I now have 86 slots to fill as far as icons go. I need to finally add some sims ones, and hunt some Ashes to Ashes, Top Gear, Primeval and Lots icons, or caps to make some with. I already have Top Gear series 10 in my Netflix queue, because finding Top Gear icons can be a pain.

Have I mentioned how much I love youtube? I get to catch up on some of the interesting shows (from UK) instead of the crap we're stuck with on network tv. Or do something foolish like pulling Ashes to ashes series 2. Also shows you how screwy they are about copyright there. Can't wait for Sunday to see how Robin Hood plays out. Found the Doctor Who movie too, so get to see 8's time.

Having played Sims 3 a few weeks now, some further thoughts (and remember, this is from someone who had 30,000 cc files in Sims 2 at least):
- Custom content is not missed at all. Recolors aren't required with the CAST, just maybe a larger variety of patterns to use. I have eye replacements, and once good quality replacements are available for all 6 skintones, I'll probably get those, and that's mostly it.
- You won't need very many hacks. Its like they looked at all of the mods made for Sims 2, and incorporated all that they could and keep their rating. I think the only thing really missing is something to act like Insim or Simblender, and a pregnancy for all mod (instead of changing gender). Oh and perhaps something to lift the Klepto item limit.

Oh, if anyone is interested, I got my curves tool set to correct much of the bizarre darkness external capping programs and print screens get. I can post the settings if they are wanted.

Dear Jeep

Took the Jeep in for an oil change this week, and the front brakes needed changing, and the battery. Unfortunately next time I won't have an nice low service visit since differentials need servicing, and that's expensive. I need to remember and ask about the synthetic fluids they use on newer ones and if mine gets those. However I encountered a quirk in the cd player/radio that came in my Jeep. After the battery change, the radio could no longer see the cd player. Seems fairly common with the model, several people on fixya had the same thing happen. Today it got a little better, as it randomly decided to spit out one of the six disks in it, and the radio will now flip to the cd player. However it thinks there are no more disk in it =\ Good thing I got extended warranty on it when I bought the Jeep, and it still has some miles left on it. Bad thing is I have to be there at 8 for them to try a few things in it.

Also, anyone have experience with Diabetic cats? If so what do/did you feed them?

I'm still trying to find a high protein food Pooh will eat. The mixing with old food to phase it out isn't working, as she always crys for more when the old food is gone.

When playing the Broke family, I found my Loner selfsim at a protest for or against science, which happens to be her lifetime wish career track. It amused me greatly and since the in game camera for Sims 3 is so awesome, it is my wallpaper for the moment. As in life, my computer desktop has too much clutter taking up space. Though I do have a fab shot of Cycl0n3 looking like Bogart in Casablanca while having a picnic that I was going to probably switch to soon.
