Doctor Who and fandom rabbitholes

Thirteen is awesome. I love her. And she got some awesome episodes and some duds, just like all the previous doctors. I try to stay away from negativity in fandom generally, so while I'm aware of the sad fanboys that have done their best to drag her down since before she even started, I don't really know whether the decision to have less eps and the delay on having a new doctor has anything to do with her ratings/popularity.

I loved her first two seasons overall and her found family with Yas and Ryan and Graham. I watched the first couple of the 6 season 'Flux' arc a few months ago when they were airing, didn't really grab me and I got distracted. Finally sat down to finish off the series, and, full disclaimer, was tired, may have slept through bits, could tell it was an epic adventure with a cast of thousands, and was no doubt an excellent story, but I don't watch Doctor Who to watch the bad guys and one off characters take up most of the screentime while the Doctor and the companions are separated for nearly the entire series. I'm all for giving the companions agency and their own shit to do, but come on, four years?

Anyway, was pretty flat when I finished the series, but then, and this is how out of the loop I am, was pleasantly surprised to find the first of the three specials was there, Eve of the Daleks, so we watched that and I loved it to bits. It was everything I love about the show, the Doctor and companions fighting aliens together and taking care of each other and the guest stars were great too.

The Irish character sounded EXACTLY like my senior manager at work, from the sound of her voice to the phrases to the emphatic way of talking so I looked up the actress and she's a comedian as well and that sent me down a youtube rabbithole tonight.

I love all three of The Champions. I love that their partnership is professional, but that they care about each other. I love the fact that the three of them are so intertwined, psychically.

- a Big Reveal where have to use their skills in front of Tremayne to save them all/rescue him would be a bonus :)

Charles Emerson Winchester III/Benjamin Franklin/"Hawkeye" Pierce

Winchester was my favourite character. I loved the growth his character went through.

Some ideas -
- maybe Hawkeye finds out that Winchester is gay (repressed much?) and finds it mildly amusing and maybe occasionally sly alludes to it, so that Winchester knows he knows and gets all strung out about it, but Hawkeye doesn't really care and doesn't realise that he's pushing too hard...
- a fic where Hawkeye and Winchester are forced depend on each other in a way that creates a bond
- or maybe they meet after the war

Green Wing
Boyce/Alan Statham

Some ideas -
- a happy ending for them, omg.
- what went on the night of the auction and/or the morning after

I've tried to give you lots of scope, but if you find you can't work with them, or if you have another brilliant idea that excites you to write, then don't feel locked in to my prompts. I really believe the most important thing about Yuletide is writing a story that you're enthusiastic about and have fun writing.

A friend of mine asked where the best place to find hockey rpf vids is, and I realised that I am also out of touch about where to find vids nowadays. When did I stop watching songvids? Was it when it became super easy to rewatch actual shows and new shows, or when AO3 came along and all the fic in the world was suddenly at my fingertips?

Now, I have gone looking for vids on AO3 before and I'm not great at searching, so maybe this is the go to place now and I just don't know how to go?

Usually if I get a hankering, there's enough just on youtube to satisfy it, but when there aren't good ones I'm like, I should try harder. and then I wander off.

Tonight, WA is cut off from the rest of Australia, due to floods and fire and now a cyclone up north

Here in Perth we're not impacted by the fires that are burning in all six states. (Fire Map). In NSW and Victoria the fires have been burning since November. But we're not complacent, our Go bags are packed. We've had a close call before, where we got the official text instruction to either evacuate or stay and defend. It was scary, but nothing like the people over east are facing now.

It's devastating. I don't even want to link to articles, it's too upsetting. The loss of human life is bad enough, the biodiversity loss is incalculable. We're mourning.

The only, only, positive thing about this horror is that our pentacostal Prime Minister has finally been forced to acknowledge that there is a link between the fires and climate change. This is the same guy who once brought a lump of coal to parliament in order to laud it. Basically, we're the worst Australia ranked worst of 57 countries on climate change policy

Currently watching Black Lightning

SO GOOD.

I generally like my superhero shows to be escapism, not gritty realism with superheroes who beat up the bad guys who are gangsters and sex traffickers, which is why I didn't get through more than about half a dozen episodes of Daredevil or Luke Cage and wasn't even game to try The Punisher.

But I'm *loving* this, it deals with the shit black communities deal with, which is not comfortable to watch of course, but the superhero family are awesome and love and support each other but also have to work through all the crap together.

And honourable mention to the elder daughter, Anissa, being out and proud and it not being an issue.

Anyone know how AO3 coding works

I just attempted to copy and paste a polished version of a fic for a challenge, only to find that for some reason it's picked up one of my italicise tags early in the fic and repeat it all the rest of the way through the fic between every paragraph break. so that I've ended up with words

I tried the c&p from both Word and googledocs, same result.

It's quite a decent length and picking them all out individually is going to be very frustrating.

Edit: It was user error, because of course it was, AO3 is awesome.

I hope I gave you plenty of ideas to play with and inspire you. I've tried to give you lots of scope, but if you find you can't work with them, or if you have another brilliant idea that excites you to write, then don't feel locked in to my prompts. I really believe the most important thing about these fic exchanges is writing a story that you're enthusiastic about and have fun writing.

Just briefly with the likes/dislikes - I love character driven stories that focus on relationships (either ships or devoted friendships), add as much or as little plot as you like. Please, please, NO character death, rape, partner betrayal etc. I don't mind angst, as long as there's a happy ending. I am all about THE HAPPY.

Hogan's Heroes

Colonel Klink FTW!!!! I want Klink to pwn everything, basically. I like to believe he's secretly reasonably competent - after all, he was a pilot in WWI.

am all about a Hogan and Klink relationship. I'd be completely happy with a fic that just focuses on how they get together, and their relationship, any emotional conflict about loving 'the enemy' etc (just for example)

If you did want to add plotty things, some completely optional ideas to play around with: - Klink's known all along and has been sekritly protecting them. - A mission goes wrong and Klink has to protect/rescue them. - What happens at the end? Do Hogan's gang stick it out to protect Klink and Schultz etc when the camp is liberated or are they ordered to escape en masse before then? How do they spin it so Klink isn't blamed?

The Champions

Prompt - “Telepathic pain” is how they describe it, when one gets hurt and the others feel it. I love that when Richard kisses a girl, Craig smiles. I love that their partnership is professional, but that they care about each other. I love the fact that the three of them are so intertwined, psychically.

I’d really love a fic that showcases that relationship. It could a fic where they realise that they will always be the most important people in each other lives and live happily ever after together. Or a mission fic with lots of hurt/comfort and depending on each other.

MASH

Winchester was my favourite character. I loved the growth his character went through. Happy for however you would like them to get together. If you're wanting a prompt, though - maybe Hawkeye finds out that Winchester is gay (repressed much?) and finds it mildly amusing and maybe occasionally sly alludes to it, so that Winchester knows he knows and gets all strung out about it, but Hawkeye doesn't really care and doesn't realise that he's pushing too hard...

Green Wing

Prompt - Alan/Boyce is my OTP, not gonna lie.

A few OPTIONAL ideas - a happy ending for them, omg. - what went on the night of the auction and/or the morning after - any getting them together 'first time' fic, can just be them realising they want to be together if you'd rather keep it G rated.

Blood Ties

Prompt - What I *love* about this show is that it revolves around an awesome, competent, believable female character, and the two male characters never steal her limelight. I love the way they're both totally into Vicki and have an antagonistic relationship that they are totally able to put aside to help her. And I love the intense way Mike and Henry react to each other, not to mention the scene where Henry feeds off of Mike.

Extra random squee - I love Vicki's relationship with Mike, the current conflicted feelings compared to the warmth and ease in the flashbacks to when they were *together*. To be honest, I find Henry a bit bland - my fave scenes are when he gets to show his true nature - like when he drags off the priest and comes back all languid and sated. Mmmm. And then eyefucks Mike ::cough::

I can't keep up with all the superhero shows, I tend to binge watch several eps of one i like then get distracted by something else, non superhero-related and then forget which one I was trying to catch up on. And when it's a new show I'll watch a few eps and if it doesn't grab me I'll get distracted and have good intentions *shrug* Never did watch more than a couple of eps of The Gifted, The Defenders, Luke Cage, Inhumans, Daredevil, Runaways, Legion etc Unless I get hooked on a show when I conveniently have time to BINGE binge watch. I've just watched all eleven eps of s1 Titans in a couple of days. It's dark. And the mutants are funky. and messed up. And they deal with real messed up issues, like the big tough ex-football player superhero who we meet in ep 2 then you don't see again till ep 9 where the whole ep is just his and his partner's backstory including dealing with the trauma of childhood sexual abuse. Dick Grayson is one of the main characters, he's Moved On from being Robin cos he doesn't like who he was becoming, and then later he gets to meet Jason Todd and there's some amusing replacement-jealousy. Plus I what I'm assuming is a nod to the Batman/Robin shippers out there. It amused me :) Now I'm watching the first ep of Doom Patrol and holy crap, that's Brendan Fraser, he does not look well. And there's Alan Tudyk and Timothy Dalton and Matt Bomer and I am absolutely shallow and very sad about the fact that Bomer's character's bandaged like a mummy *g*

Being Human vs Being Human

So I loved Being Human UK season 1. And then the US version started the next year, and it was the same plot line, so I didn't bother, and just kept watching Mitchell and George and Annie, but then season 2 got dark, and then season 3 was just dark, dark and more dark and ended horrifically. But then season 4 and 5 had new characters that I adored, Hal and Tom and Alex, yay!!

(This post inspired by my Choc Box recipient having my OT3 as one of their other prompts so I was inspired to watch S4-5 again on the off chance I got inspired to write a Treat. But then I made the mistake of giving into to the urge to read a few of the handful of fics for them and found this awesome, perfect fixit ending for them and now i am feeling all replete, so idk.)

So now I'm into season 2 of the US version and can't decide if it's queer coding or queer baiting, like, in S1 when they house hunt and the landlord thinks they're a couple and Aidan just goes with it I was okay they did that in the English version, but now Henry's progeny (a pretty young soldier he picked up during a WW) has turned up and they're physically familiar (Henry is very pretty and hearteyes Aidan madly in the flashbacks) and meanwhile Aidan talks to Bishop about how Bishop chased him for years with a butterfly net and now we've had a scene with Aidan in a blood drinking orgy with two girls and a dude (I say 'orgy', Aidan was wearing pants, but the others were all in sexy black underwear) but with only a couple of quick flashes of him with his arm around the dude sucking on the back of his neck and then the dude's dead or unconscious and the two girls are all over him. And now his maker Bishop (in Aidan's hallucination) is referring to Josh as Aidan's wife.

And I'm only half way through season 2. Pretty sure it's diverged enough from the original that I don't have to worry about them doing to Josh and Aidan and Nora what they did to George and Mitchell and Nina.

Also, honourable mention to baby!vampire Henry being played by the same actor who played 700 year old vampire Henry in Blood Ties several years earlier. I OT3'd Henry/Vicky/Mike, of course :)

writing commitments including signing up for a fic auction

So, was thinking very strongly that I shouldn't sign up for Chocolate Box this year as it's probably a SIGN that it's due on the same day as this massive work project I've been complaining and procrastinating about.

But am going away with the fam for 10 days next week and I really, really didn't want to have to work on my work project while I'm away so I fell over my line in the sand and buckled down and am now mostly done, and absolutely plan to have it submitted before we fly out.

So I've signed up for Chocolate Box, requesting the same half a dozen fandoms I mix and match every year at Yuletide/rare pair exchanges (okay my Swedish film is new last Yuletide but I expect it to be just as obscure - I did get a nice little Madness treat...from the same writer who wrote the lone fic on AO3). I've received my assignment and although I only matched on one fandom I offered, there's several others I could write with a bit of canon review, am feeling spoilt for choice :)

And have also discovered Fandom Trumps Hate auction, for donations to activist/resistance type charities, so have signed up for that too because there's plenty of time to write for that. You're only allowed to volunteer three fandoms so I've just listed my three main ones, none of which were on the existing 'popular fandoms' list... so if anyone would like me to write them a Whitechapel, Sense8 or Lewis fic, feel free to buy me, I guess *g*

I would love to see Chris realise that he CAN be gay for Edgar. Maybe having him ineptly attempt to woo Edgar might be fun? Or if you have another idea you’d like to run with, that’s awesome too. I generally prefer character driven rather than PWPs - I like hot porn as much as the next slasher but I like a believable exploration of how the characters get there so it certainly doesn’t have to be detailed. But because Chris has had to completely reassess his identity and ability to have sex with a man, I wouldn’t mind some insight into what he’s feeling when he does take the leap.

Just random things I love about the film, mostly I never get to rave about how much I love them:
I love how Chris is bemused by the whole thing - his developing feelings for Edgar, his jealousy of Marco, the uncertainty of not knowing if he did have sex with a man and not rejecting outright the possibility that something COULD have happened. How disconcerted he was about Mike and Edgar suddenly apparently boyfriends now.

I love that Edgar is so genuinely nice, and completely in love with Chris, that scene where he looks at a dozing Chris and murmurs just a little sadly about having fallen for him at first sight. And the teasing, the goggles ‘Du machst mir blind.’ I HAVE SO MUCH LOVE.

I do have a specific DNW for this fandom. I don't know much about Sweden but going by the film they seem pretty chill, so no overt homophobia or slurs if you write a 'coming out' fic, or if there are any scenes where people see/recognise them.
