Maloof’s work carries a mix of grime, humor and sadness, with elements that are intentionally imperfect. It leans into its human qualities, and has a recurring theme of distortion—faces stretched, eyes uneven, proportions just off enough to be unsettling. He synthesizes elements from various art movements, crafting a style that melds cultural influences with personal interpretation and material experimentation. The body of work may be interpreted by some as underground, outsider, symbolic, folk art, or surreal Americana, however, the artist himself prefers it not to be defined, boxed or confined by labels. The total of his work is best viewed as parts of whole, each part of a singular, ever-evolving piece. All works feed into the next. Ultimately, it’s all an artistic ploy that attempts to turn even the unsightly parts of the human experience into beautiful representations; he hopes for his work to serve as his contribution to the world.
