Three Drabbles
The first one was inspired by this fic, by 
quiet_rebel. The second one was inspired by the first, and thus indirectly by the fic as well. The third came out of nowhere.

Demons can stay awake indefinitely, but there are times when Ruby is sorely tempted to let herself fall asleep next to Sam. She’d do it, too, if she weren’t afraid of waking up alone. So while Sam slumbers, Ruby watches, protecting but also guarding. She won’t let anything harm him, and she will make sure he stays exactly where he is. She keeps her silent vigil the whole night through, never leaving his side, so that when morning comes and he wakes up, she will be the first thing he sees. Nothing is going to take him away from her.

Not surprisingly, Sam has frequent nightmares. Ruby knows better than to ask him what he dreams of that makes him thrash and cry out so violently. He doesn’t want to tell her, even though isn’t hard for her to guess. He doesn’t want her concern.
Still, she stays with him when he sleeps, and when the nightmares start she takes his hand in hers and gently strokes his forehead and whispers in his ear until he calms down, helping him whether he likes it or not.
Their nights are never peaceful. It doesn’t matter, though. Ruby isn’t looking for peace.

There are plenty of reasons Sam should feel guilty about his relationship with Ruby. There’s the inherent wrongness of sleeping with a demon, but that bothers him less than it once did. There’s the fact that he’s hiding it from his brother, but lately Dean has been keeping secrets of his own. The only thing he can’t rationalize away is the intense emotion in Ruby’s eyes, though she tries to hide it, when he catches her watching him during a quiet moment. It fills him with remorse to see it, because it’s an emotion he doubts he can ever return.
