Introducing the Grounding Lodge: A Wellness-Themed Mountain Retreat in Blue Ridge, Georgia
by Scott Hogan, ACE-CPT, COES
For the past several years, travel has become more than just a vacation for me. It’s become a necessary part of my annual calendar to disconnect from the day-to-day and think more deeply about my goals and how SaltWrap can most effectively fulfill its mission.
Some of my clearest thinking about SaltWrap — our mission, our strategy, and how we can better serve our customers — has happened away from the office. When I step outside of the day-to-day grind, I think more clearly. I make better decisions. I have less stress. And, in general, I’m able to reconnect with what matters most.
At the same time, my wife Carrie and I love traveling as a family — just for the sake of experiencing new places and people.
But we always felt like something was missing.
Too often, “vacation” becomes about sedation rather than true rest and recovery. The running joke for most vacationers, which I'm sure you've heard, is that you need a vacation after your vacation.
Itineraries are filled to the brim. We end up more stressed than we would’ve been at home. And for some reason, we often lean toward excess and sedation rather than reconnection.
So, we wanted to create something different.
That vision became The Grounding Lodge.
The Lodge and Setting
Nestled in the highly sought-after Aska Adventure Area, The Grounding Lodge is a private, wellness-themed mountain cabin just outside of Blue Ridge, Georgia.
It offers true mountain seclusion with treetop forest views while still being just minutes from everything downtown Blue Ridge has to offer — restaurants, shops, events, and family activities.
You’re close to hiking trails, river access, waterfalls, dining, coffee shops, and family attractions. But when you’re at the lodge, you’re tucked away in your own private retreat.
It delivers the best of both worlds: quiet seclusion and unbeatable convenience.
The Mission of The Grounding Lodge
Our mission with The Grounding Lodge is simple:
To create a place where families and health-conscious travelers can disconnect from the frenetic and “always connected” pace of modern life.
A place where vacation becomes restorative instead of merely indulgent.
Where you can move your body, spend time in nature, and reconnect with family and friends.
The same philosophy that guides SaltWrap guided this project.
The Grounding Lodge is an extension of the SaltWrap credo.
Your Private Wellness Retreat
Step outside onto the lower deck, and you’ll find your own dedicated outdoor wellness and recovery space.
I intentionally designed this space to offer opportunities for full-body movement and therapeutic exercise, including half-inch thick shock-absorbing rubber fitness flooring for joint-friendly training.
The wellness and fitness amenities include:
-
Outdoor gym with adjustable free weights, kettlebells, pull-up and dip station, TRX® suspension system, resistance bands, and workout bench
-
2-person outdoor infrared sauna
-
Galvanized steel cold plunge
-
6-person hot tub overlooking the lush mountain forest
-
Outdoor ping pong table
Sometimes your body just needs total rest. But I wanted to design a space where movement becomes convenient and blends in with the natural environment.
That's the exact feeling I get when I'm exercising in the lodge gym, or sitting in the sauna, cold plunge, or hot tub overlooking the forest below.
Beyond the wellness amenities, there are nearly endless things to do on and off the property.
Things to Do On (and Off) the Property
The basement game room gives families a place to gather without defaulting to screens.
It includes a full-size pool table, air hockey, a retro arcade cabinet, a convertible poker table with pub seating, and even (kid-safe) axe throwing. There’s a fireplace, a wall-mounted TV, and direct access to the lower deck and hot tub.
Also in the basement game room area is a third bedroom with a rare king-over-king bunk bed setup that kids go nuts for — and can comfortably sleep four adults if necessary!
Just outside the back door on the second-level deck is a full dining area with a ping-pong table, a fireplace-mounted TV, and a real wood fireplace.
Beyond the porch is a stone fireplace overlooking the valley that's perfect for ending your days together.
There's even a short on-site walking trail from an old logging road that allows you to weave through the forest down to the nearby creek. It also opens up to a field where you can catch deer grazing in the mornings and evenings.
If you want real hiking, you are in the perfect spot.
Just a couple of miles down the road is the renowned Benton McKay Trailhead. It offers both easy and challenging hiking trails for any experience level.
You're also just minutes away from the Toccoa River, where you’ll find kayaking, fly fishing, gem mining, and an endless stream of activities.
Lake Blue Ridge is also only a few minutes away, offering even more water activities, including affordable boat rentals and fishing options.
Designed for Families and Multi-Generational Stays
Another common issue we have experienced while traveling is inconsistent and less-than-ideal sleeping arrangements. So, we designed the bedroom layout to give up to three families full privacy and comfort.
And for those who, like me, sometimes need a quiet place to think or check in on work, there’s an upstairs nook with a standing desk designed specifically for deep work and reading.
You can disconnect completely — or stay lightly connected, as I often do during extended travel.
