Second Steel Mill in 4 days; this one tucked away hidden away in a corner of Lawrenceville near the Allegheny River is McConway & Torley and the last company making steel within City of Pittsburgh limits.

They have have been making steel coupler knuckles vital components to connect freight railcars, in Pittsburgh since 1869 where the company built the first semi-automatic center buffer railroad couplers.

82 years ago nearly all of the men on the first few boats that landed on the beach in Normandy were dead before days end.

Sit here with that for a while.

Look at them.

Really look at them.

Look into their eyes.

Many of them are boys, they are someone’s son, someone’s brother, someone’s sweetheart someone’s father.

They never came home.

And every privilege, every convenience, every freedom and every little thing that you want to bitch about you have because of them and they paid the ultimate price for you to have those freedoms.

Today marks 158 years since President James Garfield spoke to over 5,000 men and women at Arlington, many of them family members of the fallen or soldiers struggling to understand why they were there and their friends were not.

Garfield conveyed that sentiment in the beginning of his speech saying, “I am oppressed with a sense of the impropriety of uttering words on this occasion. If silence is ever golden, it must be here beside the graves of fifteen thousand men, whose lives were more significant than speech, and whose death was a poem, the music of which can never be sung.”
