I just wanted to write you a quick Merry Christmas message and wish you all of the best for the holiday season whether you’re spending it with friends and family or going solo.

2023 has been a big year for Sailor Moon and 2024 is already gearing up to potentially be even bigger. There’ll be plenty of time to recap and look ahead in the email I’ll be sending out after Boxing Day though.

For now, take some time for yourself and those close to you and enjoy the quiet this time of year can bring.

What a week! Sailor Moon Cosmos Part 2 has debuted in Japanese theatres which means that it’s now only a matter of time until we get an official announcement concerning the Sailor Moon Cosmos English dub and the eventual International release.

My prediction? Netflix announced their aquisition of the Sailor Moon Eternal movies just over two months after Eternal Part 2 premiered in Japan. Both Part 1 and 2 then launched on Netflix two months after that announcement. Assuming that the same timeline’s followed, we may get a Sailor Moon Cosmos announcement in August or September with an International release (likely also on Netflix) around November.

It’s a pretty safe bet that we’ll be watching an official English release of Sailor Moon Cosmos Part 1 and 2 by the end of the year.

• As you may have guessed from the above image, a Proplica of the Sailor Moon’s Eternal Tiare has been announced! No pre-orders have gone live yet though it is currently set for release in January 2024. Update: Pre-orders are now live here.

• A massive 60x57cm Eternal Sailor Moon model has also been announced. No pre-orders or even images of the model yet though it is confirmed for release later this year in NH autumn/SH spring.

• The Sailor Moon Museum has been confirmed to contine in Japan in 2024.

• I just came across these official Sailor Moon pajama pants.

• The Sailor Moon Cosmos Song Collection album has now been released. I just recieved mine and will be writing a review for it this week.

• The five main actresses from the PGSM live-action Sailor Moon TV series recently got together.

It’s been an exciting time lately with the release of Sailor Moon Cosmos Part 1 in Japan at the beginning of the month and Part 2 set for release this Friday.

To help build hype for both movies, the opening sequence for Part 1 was released on the official Sailor Moon YouTube channel and it got an absolutely massive reaction from fans online.

The Sailor Moon Cosmos Part 1 opening, which you can watch below, clearly draws inspiration from the 90’s Sailor Moon S opening credits but it also features elements from the other classic openings as well.

Personally, while I do like Moonlight Legend as a song, its use here does feel a bit too safe. I think it would have made more sense to use a new version of Moon Pride since this is a conclusion to the Sailor Moon Crystal iteration of the franchise. It doesn’t bother me too much though.

A fan has already made an edit with the English Sailor Moon theme over it. I’m obsessed.

Sailor Moon Cosmos Part 2 won’t use Moonlight Legend. Instead, that film will use a new cover of Sailor Star Song, the opening song for the final season of the 90’s anime, Sailor Stars. The animation for that sequence hasn’t been officially released yet though you can listen to a preview of it here.

A third song has also been released online. Its name is a bit of a spoiler for Sailor Moon Cosmos Part 2 so I won’t mention it here. If you’ve read the manga though, feel free to have a listen here. Curiously, this new song has very strong Sailor Moon musical vibes.

What an exciting month June has turned out to be for Sailor Moon news! Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Cosmos Part 1 is now showing in theatres in Japan with Part 2 still on track to premiere at the end of this month on the 30th.

While most had assumed that all of the casting announcements for Sailor Moon Cosmos had been made, the fandom was rocked this week by the reveal that Keiko Kitagawa would be voicing the role of Sailor Cosmos in Part 2.

You can watch the announcement video below though note that it contains some spoilers for those that haven’t read the Sailor Moon manga.

Also worth checking out is this cute photo of Keiko with Kotono Mitsuishi, the Japanese voice actress who plays Sailor Moon in both the original 90’s anime and the new Sailor Moon Crystal productions.

Keiko Kitagawa is known to fans for playing Sailor Mars in the 2003 live-action Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon TV series. It’s curious that PGSM is turning 20 this October though it’s unknown if Keiko’s casting in Cosmos is related to it or not. Still, it’s great to see that she still has a fondness for the franchise and is open to returning for some projects.

A full trailer for Sailor Moon Cosmos Part 2 was released after Part 1 debuted in Japanese theatres. It features loads of new footage though, like with the above video, also contains some major spoilers. You’ve been warned.

In addition to the above two videos and the Keiko Kitagawa announcement, the official music video for Sailor Moon Cosmos’ main theme, Moon Flower, also dropped.

Rather surprisingly, the Moon Flower music video boasts entirely new animation with original Sailor Guardian characters. Check it out.

The big Sailor Moon news right now is the official announcement of the Japanese theatrical release dates for Sailor Moon Cosmos Part One and Part Two.

Sailor Moon Cosmos Part One will will debut in Japanese theatres on the the 9th of June. Part Two will follow just a few weeks later on the 30th of June. The fact that Part Two is debuting on Usagi’s birthday does make me wonder if some kind of announcement will be made both at the end of the movie and via official Sailor Moon channels. Could the Sailor Moon Crystal anime continue past the Stars arc? Or maybe we’ll just get an announcement of a Crystal Blu-ray box set with the first three seasons plus Eternal and Cosmos. Time will tell.

A short teaser with new footage was released as part of the release date announcement. You can check it out below.

Marina Inoue, Saori Hayami, and Ayane Sakura were announced as the voices for Sailors Star Fighter, Star Maker, and Star Healer. Days later, Megumi Hayashibara was announced as the voice of Sailor Galaxia. Anime fans may recognise her from her work in Neon Genesis Evangelion, Slayers, and Pokemon.

Nana Mizuki was confirmed as Sailor Kakyu and Kotono Mitsuishi, who most will know as the voice of Sailor Moon, will also be voicing Chibi Chibi.

Pretty exciting! But wait, there’s more!

Earlier today, a brand new poster for Sailor Moon Cosmos was released alongside another new trailer. This new trailer gives us our first look at both Chibi Chibi and Sailor Galaxia and also includes a small sample of the movies’ main song, Moon Flower, performed by Daoko. Check it out below.

The new poster is also pretty cool and gives us our first look at the fan-favourite Sailor Moon character, Sailor Cosmos, in the lower-right corner in one of the crystal shards.

The Sailor Moon Cosmos hype is real and with only five months left until its premiere, movie-related announcements are bound to ramp up even more.

Is Sailor Saturn in Sailor Moon Crystal?

Yes, Sailor Saturn does appear in the Sailor Moon Crystal anime series. While Sailor Saturn is absent in the first two seasons of Sailor Moon Crystal, she's a major player in Sailor Moon Crystal Season 3. Sailor Saturn was voiced by Yukiyo Fujii in the original Japanese version of Sailor Moon Crystal and Christine Marie Cabanos in the English dub.

Hotaru's first appearance in Sailor Moon Crystal is in Season 3's second episode, Act 27 Infinity 1 - Premonition - Part 2. After her initial appearance, Hotaru becomes a major supporting character and eventually evolves into somewhat of a main villain for the season. READ MORE

With new Sailor Moon anime, manga, and musicals on the way throughout the rest of 2022 and into 2023, major Sailor Moon news is going to be dropping very quickly and at very regular intervals.

The top Sailor Moon story right now is the announcement of a new line of item replicas from Premium Bandai. Named the Miracle Shiny Series, this new product line is set to debut in January 2023 with both a Transformation Brooch and a Moon Stick boasting fresh redesigns and a new colour aesthetic.

These Miracle Shiny Series items are very similar to the previously released Proplicas (though noticeably cheaper) and feature LED light-up functionality. Japanese pre-orders are currently up on the Premium Bandai website. I’ll make sure to share international links once they’re live. They’ll likely be live on the CDJapan website soon.

Some other big Sailor Moon news worth highlighting before we delve into the rest of the stories is the debut of the English dub of Sailor Stars on Hulu in the USA and other regions. The original Japanese version of the 90s Sailor Stars anime has been on Hulu for a while now but there’s been a bit of a wait for the English language version made by Viz Media.

The Spanish version of the first season of the 90s Sailor Moon anime also launched on the Claro Video platform this week. I know the Spanish version of Sailor Moon has a lot of fans so this’ll likely make a few Moonie’s week.

• Remember that documentary that uncovered the lost USA Sailor Moon TV pilot? Well some of the music from it, which is a remix of the show’s theme song, is now available to listen to on its own.

• Melendy Britt, the original voice actress for She-Ra has confirmed that not only did she voice Luna in that unaired Sailor Moon pilot but she also did the voiceover as well.

• Converse is releasing some shoes that are totally not related to Sailor Moon in any way.

• TikTok has added a Magical Transformation filter which essentially allows anyone to make their own Sailor Moon anime transformation sequence.

• Miyuu Sawai, the actress who played Sailor Moon in the Japanese live action Sailor Moon TV series, recently did a rewatch of the show’s first few episodes on her YouTube channel.

• A new collection of Sailor Moon products inspired by traditional Japanese crafts has been announced.

• This Sailor Moon x Moon Knight cosplay is amazing.

• New Sailor Moon necklaces inspired by the princess designs have been announced.

• Speaking of the planetary princesses, the 2023 pre-orders for Ban Presto’s Princess Pluto, Uranus, Neptune, and Venus figures are now online. This series looks incredible.

• After a smaller Moon Kingdom figure? The Tamashii Nations Figuarts Mini Princess Serenity figure is also up for pre-order as is the Prince Endymion one. Both are currently set for release in February 2023.

• The Eternal Sailor Moon Figuarts Mini figure is set for release in April next year and can also be pre-ordered now.

I was thinking this was going to be a pretty mid newsletter in regards to Sailor Moon news but then, just yesterday, a fan uncovered the full unreleased proof of concept pilot for the proposed half animated/half live-action USA Sailor Moon series soooo let’s dive right in!

Long-time Moonies will remember that classic off-screen recording of a part of this project that was made behind closed doors at an anime convention and then uploaded to the internet and shared to every corner of the 90s Sailor Moon fandom via email lists, discussion forums, and even RealPlayer streams.

Here’s a copy I just uploaded to Odysee and my YouTube channel for prosperity.

For the most part, everyone assumed that we’d never get a better quality version of this “Saban Moon” Sailor Moon project (which was actually made by Toonmakers, not Saban, which is why many now refer to it as the Toonmakers Sailor Moon show) let alone see more footage from it.

However, filmmaker, Ray Mona, did the impossible and managed to track down the entire Sailor Moon video as part of her research for the second part of her Finding Saban Moon: The Western World of Sailor Moon documentary.

The video below is cued up to play when the Toonmakers Sailor Moon pilot starts though I highly recommend watching the entire documentary once you’re done as the effort that went into this documentary is super-impressive and there’s some legit interesting nuggets of information in it that most Sailor Moon fans will appreciate.

The internet has exploded since this video dropped just over 24 hours ago. Some fans are still bagging the project out for its 90s fashion and cheese but there’s also a lot of positive interest shown by fans in regards to the lore and world-building that this reinterpretation of Sailor Moon was trying to attempt.

Personally, I’ve been surprised by how much I now like the Saban Moon/Toonmakers Sailor Moon pilot and I honestly wouldn’t be upset if we got something like this after Sailor Moon Cosmos Part 2 comes out next year.

Last Minute Update: A follower of mine on Twitter noticed that Luna’s voice sounded a lot like that of She-Ra from the original classic 80s cartoon series. I agreed and reached out to the voice actress, Melendy Britt, via her official Facebook page. She got back to me within an hour and confirmed that she did indeed voice Luna for this Sailor Moon project. She-Ra in Sailor Moon! How cool is that?!

After a significant delay, the previously announced 2022 Sailor Moon musical seems to be a 99.99% lock due to further details and official cast images now being made available.

Unlike most of the previous musicals, Sailor Moon Musical Festival Chronicle will be a kind of special performance with a variety of songs from all of the recent musicals. The song list hasn’t been confirmed yet, and likely won’t until after the first performance, but the cast list does confirm Snow Princess Kaguya and Human Luna so there’ll likely be a good chunk of content from the recent Princess Kaguya musical.

The Sailor Moon Musical Festival Chronicle will show at the Shinagawa Prince Hotel Stellar Ball over the course of only four days from the 17th of November through to the 20th.

Each day will feature different special guest performances. There’s no information on who these will be but my guess will be various performers from past Sailor Moon musicals and possibly even the official Sailor Moon J-Pop group, SG5, who officially debuted last month.

Tickets have yet to go on sale so stay tuned for that information. It’s worth pointing out that members of the official Sailor Moon fan club will get early access to ticket sales so, if you’re a member, make sure you check your emails and other communications regularly.

Sailor Moon Musical Festival Chronicle will 100% get a DVD and/or Blu-ray release so don’t stress if you’re in Japan and can’t get a ticket or are outside of Japan and can’t get in.

If you’re abroad and you’re thinking of going to Japan, make sure to check if you’ll actually be allowed into Japan before buying your flight tickets. As of the time of this writing, even those tourists let in have to stay with a wierd kind of observed tourist group thing. Japan is being really strict with tourism right now. Personally, I’m waiting until things return to normal in 2023 (or God forbid, 2024.)

Full details on that here. This online event will be available to watch on the seventh disc of the above box sets.

First of all, I want to apologise for my absence over the past few weeks. It’s winter here in Melbourne, Australia and that world-famous virus swept through the city leaving almost no one untouched.

While I thankfully didn’t need to be hospitalised, the virus completely knocked me out and, even now that I’m free of it, I’m still experiencing massive nausea and fatigue. It’s a genuine struggle to sit at my Surface Pro and type but I’m assuming that I’ll be like this for at least a few more weeks (as was the case when I first caught it in early-2020) and didn’t want to keep you guys waiting any longer.

I especially don’t want to let down any of my awesome subscribers who have upgraded to a paid subscription. Your support honestly means so much to me.

The biggest Sailor Moon news by far has been the announcement of an official Sailor Moon J-Pop group called SG5. SG5, as you may have guessed, stands for Sailor Guardians Five, and features five performers with aesthetics inspired by Sailor Moon, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Venus.

Something I personally like about the SG5 concept is how the five members aren’t simply dressing up as the Sailor Guardian characters. They’ve each drawn inspiration from the vibe of the source material kind of like how a fan of Sailor Jupiter may throw on a green jumper instead of going all out with a full Sailor Jupiter cosplay.

So far, SG5 have performed in a sneaky quasi-secret performance at Anime Central back in May and in an official debut performance at Anime Expo earlier this month.

Here’s a video of SG5’s appearance at Anime Expo 2022:

It’s unclear if this group will be solely used to promote the Sailor Moon franchise at North American anime conventions or if something bigger is planned. I personally wouldn’t be surprised to see at least a few songs from them in the upcoming Sailor Moon Cosmos movies.

SG5 is officially described as an “intergalactic pop supergroup that protects the universe from evil, injustice and negativity” and has apparently been in the works for at least two years. The names of the performers are Sayaka, Ruri, Miyuu, Rui, and Kaede, each already with a history in the J-Pop industry.

In other Sailor Moon news:

• The Sailor Moon Vans products came and went literally in just a few minutes. Unfortunately many fans were unable to purchase the items they wanted due to them selling out too quickly both online and in realworld store locations. Many also reported that orders that were successfully made online were cancelled after the fact due to the Vans website being unable to keep up with the number of orders being made. In short, they ran out of stock and were still accepting orders.

• No official word has been made yet on future Vans Sailor Moon collaborations though given the popularity of this initial run, future collabs are incredibly likely.

• The annual Japanese Usagi’s Birthday celebration happened at the end of June but due to the number of announcements made during the Sailor Moon Cosmos event, there wasn’t much new news to be made so it was downgraded to just a quick YouTube video this year instead of a whole presentation. Here’s the super-short official video for the non-event:

• One announcement that did stand out was the Sailor Moon Jimmy Choo collaboration. The prototype for these future premium boots are curently on display at the Sailor Moon Museum event in Tokyo which is now open to the public.

• Speaking of the Sailor Moon Museum, the menu for its Sailor Moon Cafe is now online and it looks super fun.

• Details on the Sailor Moon Museum exclusive merchandise have also been announced. These items are only available on-location and are pretty expensive so, if you’re planning on going, make sure you have extra funds on your credit card. My personal favourite item is the official Sailor Moon neon signs which I would totally buy if they didn’t literally cost over $4,000.

• A Miracle Romance Sailor Moon Collaboration Book has been announced for a release in September.

• The Eternal Sailor Moon Figuarts figure has released in Japan. The USA version is expected in November.

• Volume 3 of the Naoko Takeuchi Collection Sailor Moon manga (basically a cheaper paperback version of the Eternal Edition) is still set for a 2nd of August release in the USA. Yay for no more manga delays!

• Some cute new Sailor Moon keychains have been announced for Sailor Moon Store locations.

• I love this retro Sailor Moon top from Box Lunch. This black one is also pretty cool.

• Marco Albiero, an artist frequently hired to create artwork for Sailor Moon posters and Blu-ray covers, tweeted out this pic he made of Sailor Cosmos over one of the new James Webb Telescope images.

The biggest news by far this week is the debut of the official Sailor Moon Vans products which launched today in the United States and are expected to roll-out to other regions by the end of the month.

In addition to a rather impressive number of Sailor Moon Vans shoes, Vans has also produced a number of other official Sailor Moon products ranging from shirts and caps to backpacks and socks.

All of Vans’ Sailor Moon items can be purchased via the official Vans website and offline in Vans stores. Sailor Moon Vans products will also likely pop up in other retailer locations and websites that have a history of selling Vans shoes.

As of the time of this writing, Amazon doesn’t have the Sailor Moon Vans products up for sale just yet but you can bookmark this page and check once a day until they appear.

Note: The Vans Sailor Moon items are incredibly popular online and are expected to sell out incredibly fast. If you have your eye on one or two products, I’d grab them ASAP. Don’t be so picky with where you buy them from that you miss out.

Sailor Moon designs are also now available in Vans’ custom shoe creator if you want to customise your Sailor Moon shoes.

Where Can I Buy Sailor Moon Vans in My Country?

Not in the United States? That’s cool. Neither am I.

Sailor Moon Vans products have been confirmed for several major regions and most are expected to go live at various times before the end of this month (June 2022.)

Some Vans websites, like Vans Australia, have a dedicated page for the Sailor Moon releases while others don’t. The easiest strategy is to simply check your local Vans website and do a search for “Sailor Moon.”

If you can’t find your local Vans, simply visit the Vans USA website and select your country from the menu at the bottom of the page. You can also pop into a local Vans store and ask staff. They may even be able to show you some of the merch before they start selling it.

Japan seems to be getting some special black and white Sailor Moon Vans items on the 16th of June alongside the other coloured products. It’s unclear right now if these will be releasing internationally.

It’s not all about Vans this week. Here’s what else has been going on in the world of Sailor Moon recently:

• New Sailor Moon art! Naoko Takeuchi has produced three new Sailor Moon images which will be on display at the Sailor Moon Museum exhibit starting next month. Here’s my favourite.

• The second volume of the Naoko Takeuchi Collection of the Sailor Moon manga is now on store shelves (unless sold out).

• Some Moonies have begun to get their copies of the USA Sailor Moon Full Season One Blu-ray set which is officially set to launch on the 14th of June. Turns out it actually does have a better image quality than Viz’s initial releases, fixes the episode preview order, and even includes a new interview. Full breakdown in this Twitter thread.

• There was a Sailor Moon sighting in the Disney Plus Chip ‘N’ Dale movie.

• HotTopic has several new Sailor Moon items including an Eternal Sailor Moon bag.

• Sailor Moon rocked New York City last month. Read all about it in the previous issue of the newsletter here.

It’s been a pretty exciting time recently for Moonies so let’s dive right in with the latest news.

The Sailor Moon biggest news of the past week or so is the appearance of the Sailor Guardians at the Japan Parade event in New York City. Their appearance made a pretty big impact on social media and some official photos have been shared by both the Japanese Sailor Moon Channel and the Japan Consulate accounts.

Sailor Moon even made an appearance at the Citi Field stadium while she was in town. Pretty cool!

Fingers crossed this means that a proper return of Super Live is planned for New York and other cities around the globe.

In other Sailor Moon news:

• Volume 6 of the Sailor Moon Naoko Takeuchi Collection manga is now up for pre-order. It’s currently set for release in early-2023. Start planning ahead! For links for the other volumes and their release dates, check out my Sailor Moon 2022 (now also 2023) calendar.

• In sad news, it looks like the Australian release of Volume 1 has been delayed until August. The USA version is now available. (Both are identical, just a different regional book release thing.)

• Amazon’s new Sci-Fi/Drama series, Night Sky, is fantastic and you should totally watch it. It features Aussie actor, Chai Hansen, who starred in the Sailor Moon Dead Moon Circus fan film from almost a decade ago. You may also recognise him from The 100 and Shadowhunters. There are some great surprises in Night Sky so avoid all trailers and commercials and just dive right in.

• Some new Q Posket planetary princess figures are on the way featuring the Outer Sailors. Sailor Uranus and Neptune are due out in November this year, Sailor Pluto in December, and Sailor Saturn in Janury 2023.

• In Australia? You can grab the Inner planetary princess Q Posket figures at EB Games. Will share other links when live.

Sailor Moon Cosmos is a new movie project set for release in theatres in Japan in 2023. It’s essentially the fifth part of the Sailor Moon Crystal adaption of the Sailor Moon manga and will cover the Stars Arc.

Like Sailor Moon Eternal, Sailor Moon Cosmos will also be split into two separate parts. Details on the international release hasn’t been confirmed yet though odds are that it’ll at least be picked up for streaming by Netflix so I wouldn’t be too worried.

Looking for a textless version of the Sailor Moon Cosmos teaser poster? Drew Kanzumba in the Moonkitty.NET Facebook Group tracked down a high res version on the official site. Careful though. It’s MASSIVE.

Oh, and there’s also an official Sailor Moon Cosmos teaser trailer with footage and voice acting. Check it out here.

Speaking of the voice acting, it’s been confirmed that the recording for both films has already finished so they’re WAY ahead of schedule. This makes me wonder if they started production before Eternal premiered. 🤔

The Sailor Moon Cosmos reveal was made during a Sailor Moon special live event. Besides the Cosmos announcement and teaser trailer, most of the stream consisted of general discussions about Sailor Moon’s history though there were some other minor announcements.

• New official Naoko Takeuchi artwork was revealed for the Sailor Moon Museum exhibit which is set to run from July through to December at Roppongi Hills in Tokyo, Japan.

• The Shining Moon Compact is getting a re-release sometime in the near future.

• And a Q posket Special Collaboration Book is on the way with a cover featuring the prototype Sailor Moon design.

• The first volume of the Naoko Takeuchi Collection version of the Sailor Moon manga comes out in the USA this week. It’s basically a smaller, cheaper version of the Eternal Edition. Great for those on a budget. Unfortunately it seems to have been delayed until July at least in Australia.

• The Prisim on Ice Sailor Moon ice-skating show has been delayed once again until 2023. I’ve updated my Sailor Moon 2022 schedule accordingly.

• Jay Jay’s has added more official Sailor Moon merch like a new men’s tee, a Sailor Moon tarot card tee, a moon kitty hoodie, and a pair of moon kitty trackpants.

• Pre-orders for the upcoming Prince Endymion Figuarts Mini are now open! If you’re a collector, I’d pick one up ASAP as Endymion merch is rare.

• Pre-orders for the Princess Serenity model in the same figure line are also now open.

• Sailor Moon voice actress, Erica Mendez, will be attending Anime Central this month.

• The May 2022 issue of With (that’s the name of the magazine) comes with official Sailor Moon stickers and an exclusive interview with Naoko Takeuchi herself. You can buy the issue here.

• Some new Sailor Moon merch is now available at Universal Studios Japan.

• OG Sailor Moon voice actors, Linda Ballantyne and Katie Griffin shared some photos of a recent con appearance on Twitter.

• There’s a REALLY cool planetary alignment happening right now that’s well worth checking out and is viewable from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

The Return of Sailor Moon The Super Live

Sailor Moon The Super Live, the Japanese spin-off of the Japan-based musicals for American fans, is returning to New York for a special performance at the Japan Parade event in Central Park on the 14th of May.

The performance will likely just consist of a couple of songs but it’s definitely a must-see for any Sailor Moon fans who can make it to the event. This is also an incredibly good sign that more Sailor Moon musicals are planned for outside of Japan, at least as far as the USA is concerned anyway.

Sailor Moon Anime Full-Season Blu-ray Box Sets Announced

This week, Viz announced the first full-season Blu-ray box set for the first season of the 90s Sailor Moon anime for the USA region.

This set essentially contains the two previously released Part 1 and Part 2 releases in one convenient package. The content appears to be the same as the previous releases so this set is mostly for those who missed out on those or who simply want the first season of the Sailor Moon anime in one collection.

Like Viz’s previous releases, this set contains the original Japanese language version with and without English subtitles and the new English dub made by Viz. It’s also Blu-ray only. Pre-orders are now live here.

It’s currently expected to come out on the 14th of June.

While the Sailor Moon The Super Live and 90s anime box set announcements are definitely the biggest news this week, there’s still some more Sailor Moon happenings worth mentioning.

• The Sydney Royal Easter Show, which runs from the 8th to the 19th of April in Australia, will have an official Sailor Moon showbag available for sale.

• Fortnite’s Chapter 3 Season 2 Battle Pass launched last week and it includes a character called Tsuki 2.0 that’s heavily inspired by Sailor Moon with its hairstyle, schoolgirl outfit, and name which literally means Moon in Japanese. I took some screenshots of its various appearances here. On a related note, all funds raise by Battle Pass purchases before the 3rd of April will be donated to organizations supporting Ukraine.

• Crunchyroll is begining to phase out its free ad-supported membership tier.

• A preview of new official Sailor Moon merch being sold at Universal Studios Japan from next month has been released.

• The May issue of the With Japanese magazine will come with several Sailor Moon stickers and an exclusive interview with Sailor Moon creator, Naoko Takeuchi. Pre-orders available while supplies last here.

• Love these new Sailor Moon cork coasters.

• A new episode of Fighter4Luv’s DiC-style Sailor Moon anime fansub has been released!

• I know it’s early, but there’s a new official Sailor Moon Christmas stocking that’s now available.

This is a pretty big month for Sailor Moon as the 90s anime series just celebrated its 30th anniversary a few days ago on the 7th of March. Kind of crazy how quickly time flies. I legit had to double and triple-check that I had the maths right but it is in fact correct.

It is worth noting though that this anniversary is for the premiere of the first episode of the anime in Japan, not the English version which debuted internationally a few years later.

In some personal news, I’ve begun the process of copying the Moonkitty.NET YouTube channel over to Odysee, a new cloud-based video site that I’m really into right now. I’ve been surprised by the number of Moonies that are already on Odysee and the Fighter4Luv Fandubs even joined just a few days ago.

• The first volume of the Sailor Moon: Naoko Takeuchi Collection manga release has been delayed from the 5th of April to the 3rd of May. The dates for Volumes 2 through 4 remain unchanged. You can see the full release schedule in my special 2022 Sailor Moon Dates newsletter.

• The fifth volume of the Sailor Moon: Naoko Takeuchi Collection is now locked in for release on the 6th of December later this year and its cover art (see top image) has also been revealed. You can pre-order Sailor Moon: Naoko Takeuchi Collection Volume 5 here.

• While pre-orders for the Japan release of Tamashii Nations Sailor Chibi/Mini Moon Figuarts (Animation Color Edition) may have sold out, the pre-orders for the identical USA release have now opened.

• USA pre-orders have also now opened for the Tamashii Nations Eternal Sailor Moon Figuarts figure which is set for release in November.

• If you’re new to Figuarts, make sure to check out the various cool official accessories that can add special effects, attacks, and locations to your new anime figures.

• Japanese voice actor, Toshiya Ueda, unfortunately passed away in February at the age of 88. He voiced the gardener in the first season of Sailor Moon, Owl in Kingdom Hearts II, and Splinter in the Japanese dub of TMNT.

• Jennifer Cihi, the singing voice of Sailor Moon from the 90s English version, is holding a special event for fans in May. Details here.

• Emilie-Claire Barlow, the second voice of Sailor Mars and Sailor Venus in the 90s English version of the Sailor Moon anime, can now be summoned via Amazon Alexa for those in the USA. Pretty cool.

Let’s get into it. 🌙

• January saw the release of the Sailor Moon Eternal Crisis Moon Compact Proplica and Princess Kaguya’s Beloved musical Blu-ray and DVD release in Japan.

• During a Women’s Royal Rumble match this past weekend, Sasha Banks, who non-wrestling fans may recognise from The Mandalorian Season 2 where she played Koska Reeves, showed off her love for Sailor Moon by dressing up in her own personal take on the Sailor Guardian’s outfit. Check out some clips here, here, and here.

• Disney+ dropped the trailer for their upcoming Moon Knight TV series last month and it got a lot of Sailor Moon fans talking about the Moonlight Knight from the second season of the 90s Sailor Moon anime. While the Moon Knight character predates Sailor Moon by many years, it’ll be interesting to see if they slip in a Sailor Moon reference.

• Masaya Kikawada, Joji Shibue and Miyu Sawai who played Motoki, Tuxedo Mask, and Sailor Moon in the live-action Japanese Sailor Moon TV series recently starred in a project together 19 years after the end of PGSM. This time around they’re in a Power Ranger web miniseries called Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger: The Legacy of The Master's Soul. Details for those in Japan can be found here. Some basic info for English-speaking fans can be read here.

• Ayaka Komatsu (PGSM’s Sailor Venus) also made an appearance in the main Ryusoulger TV series as well.

• The Australian release of Sailor Stars Complete Series Blu-ray Set is set for the 16th of February. It’s likely going to very popular for both domestic and international Sailor Moon fans so I recommend pre-ordering if you haven’t already.

• A cute Princess Small Lady model is coming to UFO catcher/crane machines in Japan in June.

• The official logo for Sailor Moon’s 30th anniversary has been officially revealed. The Sailor Moon manga turned 30 in December last year while the original anime will hit 30 in March this year. Check out the new logo below and explore previous versions here.

• The special Roppongi Hills Sailor Moon exhibit from a few years ago will be returning this year. No dates have been confirmed yet.

• The official Sailor Moon Eternal VR experience is now available to play on the Viveport VR platform.

• A Sanrio collaboration has been announced as part of Sailor Moon's 30th anniversary. More details to come though sounds like we might get some short animated cartoons.

• And finally, Sailor Moon 2022 collaborations have been confirmed for Anna Sui, Wicca, Maison de Fluer, Samantha Vega, and more.

• 16th: Australian release of Sailor Stars Complete Series Blu-ray Set.

What could 2022 have in store for Sailor Moon? Here are some of my predictions.

1. Sailor Moon Crystal Season 5 Announcement

I’m honestly willing to put money on getting some kind of Sailor Moon Crystal Season 5 announcement at some point in 2022. What I’m unsure about though is what form this animated adaption of the Sailor Moon manga’s Stars arc will take.

This fifth Sailor Moon Crystal chapter could do something similar to the fourth which released as two separate movies, Sailor Moon Eternal Part 1 and 2. It’s unclear how successful Sailor Moon Eternal was though so the companies involved may opt to produce a lower budget TV series like Sailor Moon Crystal 1 through 3. An international release on Netflix is likely.

2. A New Sailor Moon Musical

At the very least, I think we’ll get some kind of announcement of a new Sailor Moon musical but if they decide to produce some kind of revised version of the current Princess Kaguya musical instead of making a brand new performance, we could see it debut before the end of 2022 as well.

3. More Full-Colour Sailor Moon Manga

Full-colour versions of the first two volumes of the Sailor Moon manga have been released digitally in Japan. They’ve been out for a while now so it’s only a matter of time until more volumes come out. I wouldn’t expect an English translation of these until 2023 or even 2024 though as they would be competing with the Naoko Takeuchi Collection release.

4. The Naoko Takeuchi Collection Manga Will Actually Come Out

The Naoko Takeuchi Collection, which is basically just a smaller, cheaper, paperback version of the large, premium Eternal Edition release, has been delayed several times but I’m pretty confident that at least the first two volumes will hit shelves in 2022 in English-language regions.

5. At Least 1 Sailor Moon Art Book

Waiting for a new Sailor Moon art book to release has become somewhat of a meme lately due to the complete absense of any announcement or updates. With the Sailor Moon manga officially turning 30 last month, in December 2021, there really would be no better time for a new art book to come out. It’s also possible that we could get something to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the 90s Sailor Moon anime or even Sailor Moon Crystal and Eternal.

I’m 50/50 on a new Sailor Moon art book coming out this year but we’ll definitely get some kind of announcement at the very least.

6. Sailor Starlight Merch

The inevitable arrival of Sailor Moon Crystal Season 5, in whatever form it takes, will undoubtedly be accompanied by a plethora of merchandise based on the Sailor Starlights, Princess Kakyu, Sailor Galaxia, and all of the other characters that appear in the Stars arc.

7. Sailor Moon Video Game Collabs

I doubt we’ll get a dedicated Sailor Moon video game in the near future but I can definitely see some kind of collaboration with an existing title or series.

In late-2021, Fortnite finally added several Naruto characters and items complete with cellshading to ensure that they look exactly like their anime counterparts. I could definitely see Fortnite expressing interest in bringing over some Sailor Moon characters.

Of course, there are options beyond Fortnite, such as Minecraft, that could work really well with some kind of Sailor Moon collab. We’ll probably get some Japanese mobile puzzle game collab in 2022 but I’m hoping we’ll get something more substantial and less niche.

8. IRL Sailor Moon Events

The pandemic isn’t over but it does seem to be stablising. As a result, I can definitely see some real-world Sailor Moon events happening again in Japan in mid to late-2022.

9. Sailor Moon NFTs

Love or hate NFTs, this is something I can definitely see Toei or Kodansha dipping their toes into in 2022. More and more mainstream pop culture properties are selling official NFTs to rake in some extra cash and it’s only a matter of time until we get some Sailor Moon NFTs. After all, 2021 did see the arrival of official One Piece NFTs.

Digital Sailor Moon trading cards? Digital animated anime scenes? It’s hard to say what form they’ll take. If we don’t get Sailor Moon NFTs, my backup predictions are NFTs based on Dragon Ball or maybe even Ghost in the Shell.

10. New Sailor Moon Project Announcement

My final (and riskiest) prediction for 2022 is that we’ll get an announcement relating to some kind of new Sailor Moon media project in addition to Crystal Season 5 and the musicals.

This could be something small like audio plays but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for some kind of new live-action series or movie produced, or at least released, by Netflix. The company has already shown interest in the Sailor Moon brand with Crystal 1-3 and Eternal arriving on the platform in 2021. I wouldn’t be surprised if the contract they signed for that content included something about producing and releasing new Sailor Moon content. If not, we now know that Netflix is talking to the companies and individuals behind Sailor Moon so a new deal could likely be struck fairly easily.

While Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop was a massive flop, their live-action version of Winx was a big enough hit to garner a renewal for a second season. There tends to be a lot of crossover between the Sailor Moon and Winx fandoms so Netflix could see the success of Winx as justification for a Sailor Moon adaption. There’s an audience for it.

What’s more, after the various manga, musical, and anime versions of Sailor Moon, most fans would welcome a creative reinterpretation of the story and characters. The Japanese live-action Sailor Moon series showed what can be done with Sailor Moon when the creatives have free reign. I’d love to see what Netflix would do. At the very least, it would give us another version of Sailor Moon to analyse for the next decade or so.
