Listens: Never Is Enough by Barenaked Ladies

One-Eyed Wonder Wiener

(Welcome back, folks. Sasori wanted me to do the setup because she's feeling a little depressed about this post, but she says it has to be done. Most of the people who read this already know, but she wants to fill in the details. She would've posted about it earlier, but she hasn't been ready to write about it at length until now. Besides, I told her writing about it would make her feel better. It always does. Anyway, I'm going to transfer command over to Sasori now. I'll check back in with you at the end.)

Okay, here goes nothing. My new puppy, Libby, is currently sitting on the sofa beside me with the right side of her face resting on a pillow. Every now and then she turns her head to look at me instead of simply opening her left eye. This is because her left eyelids are stitched together. Libby only has one eye.

Last Friday, my mother and I brought Libby to a friend's house. She was teasing their cat like the bold, overzealous puppy she is, and the cat became territorial and smacked her in the face with his claws. Libby yiped roughly twenty times in succession, but we assumed this was simply because she was scared and hurt. It wasn't until the next day, when we cleaned her eye off and got her to open it, when we discovered that her eyeball had been punctured.

My father and I brought Libby to the local animal hospital to have her examined. The doctor gave us a few options, none of which she was particularly confident in. She then offered to call a nearby veterinary college to ask if we could bring her there for examination. They agreed, and my dad, mom, and owner of the cat who had injured Libby drove her for two hours out to the college.

I waited anxiously at home until I recieved a phone call from my dad. He informed me that her eye couldn't be saved and they would have to operate to remove it the following Monday. The news didn't really sink in until Libby came home medicated and sleepy with a plastic cone around her neck. My mom and I cried for a while.

On Monday, my mom and I went to pick our puppy up from the pet hospital. Libby's eye was swollen and closed with a row of ugly stitches, but she was happy to see us. The docotr there was very nice and attentive. We decided to transfer all of our pets' records over to the vet they're associated with. We brought Libby home and she slept for several hours.

Today, the eye is almost completely healed nd the stitches will be removed next Wednesday. Libby runs, jumps, plays, and attacks my toes with as much vigor and enthusiasm as ever, if not more. She'll get along just fine without the eye. It's ironic that we're more upset about the loss of her pretty brown eye than she is.

(That's all for today, folks. I think Sasori and her family are going to be okay. They just need a little time. Libby, on the other hand, just woke up and needs to be fed. We'll see you next time at Sasori's Rock. Until then, this is Takusan Kangae, signing off.)
