Title: In Which A Breakup Of Sorts Is Attempted
Fandom: Fairy Tail
Pairing: Lucy/Natsu/Erza/Gray and referenced Lucy/Loke
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 1,753
Summary: The Strongest Team have been sleeping together, but now Lucy and Loke kind of have A Thing and Lucy wants to break it off with the others. Who want to talk about it. In the middle of the street.
A/N: Takes place in the same timeline as Self-Discipline and Other Abandoned Moral Standards. You don't have to read it first, but you do have to know that it involves Erza, Gray, and Natsu robbing Lucy of her virginity and being obnoxious jerks a lot because that's how they roll. This installment rated for mild swearing and discussion of sex. In public. Because I, much like Mashima, cannot ever give Lucy a break.
“I am not abandoning you!” Lucy insisted for the umpteenth time, oh my god as she marched steadily home and away from the pursuing team of utter nutjobs behind her. “We’ll still go on jobs, I’ll still eat lunch with you guys--”
“But no sex,” Natsu whined. Whined. In public! “We like sex.”
“You like sex!” Gray pointed out, sounding like he still couldn’t figure out whether to try for reasonable or completely irate. The effect was a tone of frustrated desperation that might almost make Lucy feel for him if he hadn’t been doing this all day and she wasn’t about to slap him.
“You like us,” Erza added, her voice cool and measured and okay, that was making Lucy feel a little guilty, because it was Erza. “Or at least you told us you did.”
“I do,” Lucy shot back, and she was pissed off and defensive and tired of this and just wanted to go home and slam the door in their faces because she was just done discussing this. There was nothing to discuss. “I - I love you guys. That’s not the point!”
“Then why do you like Loke better than us now?” Natsu whined, and if he didn’t stop that Lucy was going to punt him into the river.
“It’s not about that,” Lucy ground out. God, how many times had he asked her that today? “I just like him…different. We’re dating, or, or trying to, but you guys aren’t making it any easier!”
“What difference does that make?” Erza asked, like she really honest-to-god didn’t know, and Lucy was just dying here. “Have we been bad to you? Offended you?”
“You offend me every day of my life,” Lucy growled, hopefully a little too quiet to be heard.
“What has he got that we haven’t got?” Gray asked at last, and that was just it, and Lucy stopped right in her tracks and stood there. “Well?”
Lucy whirled on them, and when they all stopped and looked taken aback at the fury in her face, she couldn’t help feeling a little proud of herself underneath the fact that she had had it. “What has he got? You want to know what he’s got!? I’ll tell you! He takes me on dates! Nice dates, to expensive restaurants and plays that don’t insult my intelligence! He walks me home and kisses my hand! He promised to wait until I feel comfortable taking our relationship further! He tells me I have beautiful eyes and wants to meet my father and pulls out my chair and pays for things and he’s romantic and charming and he doesn’t break into my house and eat all my food and destroy my belongings and noogie me and act like a complete barbarian, and I’m pretty sure that if we were having sex he wouldn’t rip all my panties and leave bite marks in visible places and pass out on top of me right after he finished!”
There was a long moment of silence, and once Lucy had composed herself a bit, she realized that she’d practically been screaming, they were still in public, and yes, at least eight random passersby were openly staring at her.
Silence stretched on, and eventually the strangers crept away, possibly in terror. Lucy was pretty sure she was blushing from her hairline to her toes, but damn it, she was going to stand her ground.
The three of them looked utterly dejected and sulkily avoidant in various combinations. “I didn’t even know you liked that kind of stuff,” Gray said, seeming at a loss.
“I pull your chair out,” said Natsu.
“She means as an act of chivalry, not at the last second as she’s about to sit down,” Erza corrected.
Lucy closed her eyes and concentrated hard on not killing them all, and also, for some completely insane reason, on not feeling like some sort of traitor. “Well, I do like that kind of stuff, and it’s not like you ever asked me, or like you’d have done any of it if I’d said so. Except for the last parts.”
“Lucy,” Erza protested, evenly but for a hint of - accusation? “You are ours.”
Lucy’s blood boiled all over again. “I am not! I don’t belong to you! I don’t belong to anyone!”
Suddenly, Gray looked suspicious. “No,” he said, “but Loke belongs to you.”
Natsu crossed his arms. Erza raised her chin slightly in challenge. Lucy’s fists clenched and unclenched at her sides as she took a moment to process that. “I - what?”
“He’s your stellar spirit,” Natsu informed her, as crisply as Natsu could ever really get.
“He’s not…he isn’t my property--”
“He kind of is,” Gray said, and yeah, that was definitely accusation. “I mean, not really, but when he’s with you that’s what he’s like. That’s how he thinks. He serves you.”
“Like a slave,” said Erza, and oh, knowing Erza’s past just made it sting so much more and seem miles more unfair. Lucy actually took a stumbling step back like she’d been physically struck.
“He doesn’t,” Lucy gasped, almost unable to even think anymore. “He isn’t! That’s - that’s not fair, my stellar spirits are my friends. You guys know that!”
Natsu shrugged and picked at his ear a little. “You didn’t make him that way on purpose.”
“I’m not saying you forced him into servitude,” Gray said, and, okay, maybe that accusing tone of voice wasn’t actually accusing so much as just grumpy. “I’m pretty sure he gets off on it. I mean, he’ll basically do anything I tell him and sometimes literally all he wants is just to suck me off, so being with somebody who’s literally his master has got to be his dream come true, but that’s still how it is.”
“The point being,” Erza continued, “that maybe what you like isn’t dating a gentleman so much as having someone cater to you.”
“I don’t get why you can’t just have him do the catering and still have sex with us,” Natsu said, back to the whining again. “Because it’s really good sex and I know you like it too, except for the passing out thing, because I still have all the scratches from last time, look.”
“I don’t,” Lucy began, hands in her hair, “That isn’t even relevant and we’re in public, put your shirt back on, and you guys are making me sound like a total jerk and I’m sorry but can we go back to the part about my sort-of-boyfriend sucking Gray off!?”
“There’s nothing wrong with having a dominant streak,” Erza explained patiently. “I always had a feeling you were a switch.”
“No,” said Lucy, with as much patience as she could muster, which wasn’t a lot. “No, we’re talking about the gay boyfriend oral sex thing. Go back to that.”
“Loke’s not gay,” Natsu said, in that infuriating tone of voice he used when something completely unreasonable was happening and he seemed to be under the impression that Lucy was the crazy one.
“Lucy, I’ve kind of been having sex with Loke since like a month after he joined the guild,” Gray explained, looking at her like maybe she needed to sit down or take a valium or something. “Did you not know that?”
“Loke has been having sex with just about everyone,” said Erza, thoughtfully. Lucy was pretty sure she was making a mental tally.
“Your gay boyfriend’s kind of a whore,” Natsu said casually.
“I don’t think he does it for money.”
“I was being colloquial.”
“You don’t even know what that word means.”
“I’m not stupid, I’m just really loud!”
“Guys,” Lucy shouts desperately before this has the chance to get very, very out of hand, “Why did nobody tell me!?”
“About what, Loke being a whore?”
“Slut,” Gray corrected. “Or maybe like, recreational hobbyist whore.”
“Yes, about Loke being a whore! Why didn’t someone tell me!? Why didn’t…why didn’t he tell me…”
Lucy felt like she was about to cry and she honestly didn’t know from what anymore: the implication that the most charming, honest, debonair man she ever could have hoped for has been cheating on her, or the fact that nobody seemed to care, or that all her friends were idiots, or the fact that they were still out in goddamn public talking all this over.
Probably all of the above. Yeah. Definitely all of the above.
“I don’t know, probably because he thought you knew?” Gray suggested. “I mean, does he ask you about all the people you’re hooking up with?”
“There are no all the people,” Lucy snapped. “Just you guys, and not anymore!”
Everyone just kind of looked around at each other for a minute, and then something seemed to dawn on Erza, and she said, “Lucy?” and Lucy felt this encroaching sense of dread like she was about to feel really stupid, and Erza continued with, “Are you attempting to break off our relationship because you feel an obligation to practice monogamy?”
And yeah, there was the stupid feeling, and then Natsu made it worse by looking downright worried about her and asking, cautiously, “You know nobody does that, right?”
“Some people do,” Erza explained. “Even people in Fairy Tail. But not many of them.”
“Around here, we, uh,” said Gray, and why was everyone still looking at Lucy like she should be in a straitjacket? “We just kind of assume that…yeah. That nobody does that.”
Lucy could have fallen to her freaking knees right there in the street. “Well, why didn’t anyone tell me that, either!?”
“We thought--”
“It’s not like they give you some kind of primer on your first day!”
Everyone was still looking at her and there was no way, no way--
“Lucy,” Erza said, very gently, “It’s all right. I’ll lend you my copy.”
“Oh, for god’s sake,” said Lucy, who may or may not have actually been tearing up a little.
Cautiously, the others approached, and Lucy found herself being ushered calmly in the direction of her own house.
“It’s okay,” Gray soothed. “You were sheltered.”
“Hey, not everyone can be as smart as us,” said Natsu - it was possible that he actually thought he was being helpful.
“Let’s get you home and cleaned up,” Erza added. “You can call Loke in the morning and talk about it.”
“And maybe we can have shower sex,” Natsu suggested.
“Yeah, that should make you feel better!” said Gray.
Lucy hit them all very hard.
