Which Roulette Variation Should You Choose?

Historically, the three main roulette variations are European, American, and French. All other roulette games are derivatives of these. The choice between them ultimately comes down to personal preference. In terms of betting and payouts, all three variations are the same. They are equally available in both live and RNG formats.

However, there are differences between them. The primary difference lies in the number of pockets on the wheel and the number of zero pockets. In the European and French versions, there is one zero and a total of 37 numbers, while in the American version, there are two zero pockets (0 and 00), and a total of 38 numbers. This slight difference leads to a variance in RTP and odds. In this context, American roulette is less favourable compared to the other versions. Its RTP is 94.74%, compared to 97.3% in European roulette. Furthermore, a distinctive feature of American roulette is the so-called Basket Bet, which covers 5 numbers (0, 00, 1, 2, and 3). French roulette also has unique rules, such as La Partage and En Prison. The latter is not used in online roulettes. However, if you are a beginner, we recommend focusing on European roulette, as it is easy to understand and has no extra rules or bets.

Online Roulette with Multipliers

In addition to the standard European, American, and French versions of roulette, you will find dozens of different roulette variations with multipliers in online casinos. Most of them follow the rules of European roulette. However, there is one key feature, namely the multipliers. Multipliers are usually applied to straight-up bets (less often to other inside bets) and allow you to win from x50 to x4000, depending on the game. This is significantly higher than the standard roulette payouts. It's no surprise that such games are becoming increasingly popular with Australian players. Therefore, we have compiled a list of the best ones below.

However, keep in mind that, since these games are more profitable, their RTP is usually lower than that of standard versions. Additionally, the payouts on bets that have multipliers applied are reduced if the multiplier is not applied to the bet. For example, in Lightning Roulette by Evolution, multipliers are only applied to straight-up bets and have a maximum multiplier of x500. However, the payout on this bet without multipliers is reduced to 29:1, instead of the standard 35:1.

Other Roulette Variants

The categorisation of roulette games is further complicated by the fact that, despite the basic versions of roulette, many providers release games that don't fit into the standard framework. For example, some roulette variants are found only in land-based casinos in Las Vegas, while others feature multiple wheels or balls instead of one. Below, we have gathered the most interesting roulette games.

Triple Zero Roulette

Triple Zero Roulette has three zero pockets (0, 00, 000) and 39 numbers on the wheel. This version was introduced in 2016 at the Venetian Casino in Las Vegas. The house edge of this game is 7.69%. This variation attracts players due to the presence of three zero pockets, even though the chances of winning are significantly lower.

Multi Wheel Roulette

One of the most popular variants of this type is Instant Roulette by Evolution Gaming. In this game, 12 wheels spin simultaneously, and the results are displayed instantly, allowing players to place bets and see results without delay. The game is based on the rules of European roulette with an RTP of 97.3%.

Mini Roulette

Mini Roulette is a compact version of European roulette with 13 pockets on the wheel. In this version from Playtech, the bets and payouts differ slightly from the standard. For example, a straight-up bet pays 11:1, and there are no six-number bets on the table. The RTP of this game is 96.15%, and the house edge is 3.85%.

No Zero Roulette

No Zero Roulette is a variation of roulette without a zero pocket. It is available in the RNG version from the provider Casino Web Scripts. It sounds ideal, without the zero, the RTP of the game should theoretically be 100%. However, in practice, the RTP is 95%, which is lower than the standard 97.3%, and the payouts on bets are standard. This is achieved by taking a small percentage (rake) from each win.

Progressive Jackpot Roulette

Another type of roulette found in casinos is games with a progressive jackpot that increases with each bet until someone wins it at a random moment, regardless of the size of the bet. A prime example of this variation is Age of Gods Bonus Roulette by Playtech, which features four jackpot levels, a bonus sector with multipliers up to x300, and an RTP of 94.74%.
