Inexperience is the #1 reason why new drivers crash – and the only way to gain experience is through supervised practice! Ohio’s new phone app, RoadReady Ohio, provides tools to log the required hours of practice new drivers need, while also providing real-time telematic feedback and tips.

How Does it Work?

A smartphone displaying a Drive Details log. Details include Distance, Weather, and Environment and an Overall Drive Score with ratings for Speed, Braking, Acceleration, and Sharp Turning.

The app uses cell phone telematics data to log a student driver’s practice time and provide post-drive feedback to driving supervisors based on their performance.

To track a student’s driving hours, the app requires a student account and a driving supervisor account. The two accounts will be linked, so that both individuals can see the student’s progress. The driving time and data are logged from the driving supervisor’s phone.

Completing Lessons

A smartphone displaying an app for student drivers. The app shows a user interface with a dropdown to Select your student driver. Below are tabs for Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced driving lessons.

Lessons are available as a guide and to help families make the most of their supervised driving practice. You can access these lessons by clicking on the “Lessons” icon at the bottom of the app.

Start with the Beginner lessons, and work your way up to Intermediate and Advanced as your Student Driver gains more experience and confidence. It’s always a good idea to review lessons before working on a skill with your Student Driver.

After a logged drive, the app telematics will show how the Student Driver performed in four specific driving behaviors: speeding, hard braking, acceleration and sharp turning. The app will make recommendations based on the Student Driver’s scores and the type of drive. Reviewing relevant lessons after a drive can help both the Driving Supervisor and Student understand what might have happened during their recent drive and how to improve for future drives.  Lessons can be reviewed multiple times to reinforce content.

Frequently Asked Questions

If RoadReady Ohio isn't working properly, first try logging out and back in. If the issue continues, check that you’ve downloaded the latest update to ensure you’re using the most current version of the app. This should resolve most issues. Remember – you’ll need your correct login credentials to sign in again after updating or reinstalling the app.

Specific Issues

Trouble logging into the app

  • There is one and only one login for every RoadReady Ohio account. Typically, this would be the email address used by the driving supervisor or student driver who set up the app originally. Confirm with the parties involved which address was used and if needed, use the ‘Forgot Password’ Link on the home page of the app.

Forgot Password

  • If you have forgotten your password, simply use the ‘Forgot Password’ link on the app login page to get a code sent to your email. Use this code to verify your account and reset your password.

Not getting the Reset Password email

  • Some email domains mark our reset emails as spam. Once you've confirmed which email address is the one used on the account, look in your spam folder for the Reset email. If you didn't get one, contact Customer Service and we can resubscribe you and get you back into your account.

How do I retrieve my driving log?

  • You can retrieve your driving log at any time. Just select the ‘Export Driving Report’ button in the ‘Driving Log’ tab of the home screen. The log will automatically be sent to your email as a PDF or you can download it by selecting the download icon. Next, you will have to print it, sign it, have it notarized, and take it to the Ohio BMV when your new driver is ready for their driving test.

The app did not record my drive

  • You can manually enter any drive if it did not save properly. To do so, please follow these steps:
    1. Open RoadReady Ohio app and login to your account.
    2. Select the red plus button.
    3. Select "Log Previous Drive".
    4. Enter the start time, duration, weather, road time, and time of day for the drive.
    5. Select "Validate” at the bottom of the screen.

Deleting a drive

  • If you added a drive by mistake or misrecorded a drive, you can delete it. To delete drives, please follow these steps:
    1. Open RoadReady Ohio and login to your account.
    2. Select the driving log tab.
    3. Tap on the three (3) dots next to the drive you would like to delete and
    4. Select the ‘Delete drive’ button.

My night drive recorded as a day drive

  • The app will determine local sunset times via the device's location and time at drive start, and the app will tag the drive accordingly. However, if you would like to override this, you can simply select "Night" upon drive completion, or "Edit" an existing drive. To edit drives, please follow these steps:
    1. Open RoadReady Ohio app and login to your account.
    2. Select "Driving Log”.
    3. From the Driving Log, find the drive that you want to edit and select it.
    4. Select "Edit Drive" on the summary screen of the selected drive.
    5. Tap on "Time of Day", then select "Night", then tap "Done".
    6. Select "Save" to save your edits.

You can also do an internet search to find out the sunset time for your location to determine when night driving starts.

How do I add a second student driver to the app?

  • The driving supervisor needs to login to their app and navigate to the ‘Student Management’ page in ‘Profile’. Press “+Invite” to invite a new driver via email. Enter their info and hit ‘Send Invitation’. Once the new driver sets up and confirms their account, they will appear in the driving supervisor’s app.

The app times out during a drive

  • RoadReady Ohio’s timeout feature uses GPS location and will automatically stop a drive if no movement is detected for 10 minutes. If a drive times out and doesn’t capture all your driving time, you can manually edit the entry to reflect your actual on-road time (see app functions FAQ for instructions). If you’re stopped in traffic for a long period, the driving supervisor should keep an eye on the app – you may want to end the drive and start a new one once you begin moving again.

I accidentally created two separate RoadReady accounts for one driver

  • Unfortunately, there is currently no way to link two accounts that have been set up for the same driver. We recommend that all supervisors and drivers should sign into their accounts with the email address and password used to set up these accounts originally -that way all drives are kept in one place! If you've already created two accounts, you can print out the driving logs from both accounts when they add up to your requirement. Another option is to manually add the drives from the smaller account to the larger one by using the “Log Previous Drive” feature (see specific issue FAQ for instructions). Drive sessions that are manually entered will appear on the driving log.

Drives aren't synching between devices

  • As long as two devices are linked and recording drives, they should eventually sync up. Just keep an eye on your logged drives and check the next day to make sure that they've synced up. If the problem persists, contact Customer Service.

App Functions

How can driving supervisors and student drivers access their drives and driving log on different devices?

  • RoadReady Ohio drive sessions and the driving log are specific to student driver accounts. Supervisors and student drivers have their own accounts with unique email addresses and passwords to access their drives and driving log on different devices.

Can a driving supervisor invite another supervisor for the same student driver?

  • No, a driving supervisor cannot invite another supervisor, but the student can invite a 2nd supervisor or the new supervisor can invite the student and link their accounts that way. Invites are between supervisors and students only.

How can I delete a driver from my account?

  • RoadReady Ohio allows you to add new drivers to each account so that you may manage multiple student drivers. You can disconnect student drivers from your account in the “Student Management” section of your settings.

I started to log my drive and at the end noticed my drive summary was recorded incorrectly.

  • RoadReady Ohio uses GPS location data and a reliable internet connection to log your driving sessions. If you are driving in a low to no coverage area, the app may not function properly. Additionally, if you do not allow the app to use your current location, the app will not function properly when it is closed or your phone is locked. We have built in some additional functionality to account for low coverage and a weak GPS connection, but RoadReady Ohio works best in high coverage areas and when you allow it to access your current location. If you are encountering this problem consistently, please contact Customer Service for additional guidance.

Can I edit a part of my drive?

  • You can edit the time of any drive you think was misrecorded. To edit drives, please follow these steps:
    1. Open RoadReady Ohio app and login to your account.
    2. Navigate to your ‘Driving Log’.
    3. From the Driving Log, find the drive that you want to edit and select it.
    4. Select "Edit Drive" on the summary screen of the selected drive.
    5. Tap on the field you wish to edit, make your changes, then tap "Done".
    6. Select "Save" to save your edits.

I already started the supervised driving requirement before I downloaded the app. Can I include those previous drives in the RoadReady Ohio driving log?

  • RoadReady Ohio allows you to manually enter previous drives that were not logged with the app. In the menu, select the red plus icon and then select “Log Previous Drive” and enter the start time, duration, weather, road time, and time of day for the drive. Next, select "validate” at the bottom of the screen. These drives will then be added to your existing driving log.

Am I required to use RoadReady Ohio to log my drives?

  • RoadReady Ohio is an easy way log your practice drives, but it isn’t the only way. You may also manually record drives on paper or in your phone’s notes app, and attach a handwritten driving log to your signed and notarized BMV5791 Fifty-Hour Affidavit.

Who can serve as a driving supervisor?

  • If you are under age 16, your driving supervisor must be a parent, guardian or licensed driving instructor. If you are age 16 or older, your driving supervisor can be a licensed parent, guardian, custodian, or a driver 21 years or older.

Who can use RoadReady Ohio?

  • RoadReady Ohio is designed for new drivers of all ages and their driving supervisors. Users can select the 50 hours practice program (Class D), or 24 hours practice program (Abbreviated Adult), based on their requirement from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV).  If you aren’t sure how many hours you need, visit the Ohio BMV.

How is my data used and maintained?

  • The State of Ohio does not collect or store telematics information (such as GPS data or student drive scores). All telematics data is managed solely by RoadReady Ohio. For details, please review the privacy policy within the app.

What if the student driver doesn’t have a phone?

  • You can still use the app, even if the student driver doesn’t have a phone. You will just need to use the driving supervisor’s phone to create both accounts. First, follow the steps to create a driving supervisor account and invite a student. Then, log out of the driving supervisor account. Once on the login page, click “Sign Up” and then select “Student Driver.” You can then enter the code sent to the student driver, and complete the steps to set up a student driver account. Once the student driver account is set, you will need to log out of the student driver account, and log back into the driving supervisor account to log drives.

App Platforms

Is the RoadReady Ohio app available for use on the iPad?

  • RoadReady Ohio is designed for mobile phones. Although it can be downloaded to an iPad, the app will not function properly because iPads do not provide the GPS connectivity needed for location services and telematics. For accurate recording and logging of your drives, please use RoadReady Ohio on a mobile phone.

What is the recommended mobile operating system for iPhone and Android devices?

  • For the best experience, it is recommended to use the latest version of iOS or Android on your device.
