Couldn't afford Ellie's birthday party last night *sniffle*, but did go down to Barbes, where Olivier had rented a (genuine, two reels of film!) copy of Princess Tam Tam. Judge and Lea came by, and they, Soren, and I got to see a very silly, very corny, oddly subtitled French film, with Josephine Baker making faces and dancing wildly.
I wish there were footage of her early stage shows. . . .
And, to suit the mood, I had Absente, which Jeff had obligingly set up for me, complete with sugar cubes, absinthe spoon, and pitcher of water on the side. Unlike pastis, Absente doesn't become opaque until the ratio of water to liqueur is 2:1 or greater. How odd.
I still want to be Josephine Baker when I grow up. Though without a dozen kids. But with the wardrobe.
