just a pair of shoes
Capezio dance pumps, the 1.5 inch heeled ones, originally beige, overdyed oxblood twice, resoled and reheeled at least four times. I used them as walking shoes -- I have about four pairs, though all the others are black, with various heel heights -- because they were comfortable, flexible, and, by now, molded to my feet and walking style.
I wore them in to work today, and while adjusting my footrest, realized that the upper had torn away from the sole, in such a way that it cannot be reglued. I have spare shoes under my desk, so I'm not trapped in them. I guess they're finished. . .
. . .but they're the shoes I was wearing on 11 September, the shoes I wore walking the five or so miles north, to meet Patrick, and try to figure out how to get back to Brooklyn. And I am reluctant to simply throw them in the trash.
