Welcome to Rmi India

Accelerating India's Transition to a Clean Energy Economy for All

RMI India is an independent think-and-do tank that works with diverse stakeholders to support India’s clean energy transition.

We engage businesses, communities, institutions, and entrepreneurs to accelerate the adoption of market-based solutions that support India's cost-effective shift from fossil fuels to efficiency and renewables. We have a deep focus on the the transportation and power sectors, which currently account for more than 50 percent of India's carbon emissions and particular pollution.

Our Work

RMI India collaborates with government and industry leaders to create clean, resilient, and equitable energy and mobility systems.

Areas of Work

Transportation

Working to create a clean mobility system that efficiently moves people and goods

Energy Storage

India’s energy transition is underway and it can rise among top countries in the world in manufacturing batteries

Electricity

Creating pathways to support integrated clean energy portfolios in Indian utilities

Transportation

We support India’s ambitious renewable energy and clean mobility goals by partnering with leaders in the government and the private sector on projects at the national, state, and city levels.

India has the opportunity to create equitable access to clean energy and mobility and, in doing so, deliver lasting societal and environmental benefits for generations to come. But decisive and urgent action is required to capture the opportunities at hand. The next five years are crucially important given India’s rate of economic growth and development. The transformational opportunities now on the horizon for mobility, the electricity system, and industry are significant but perishable. The range of outcomes in itself is consequential globally, and it’s likely to influence many other developing countries.

RMI India is working closely with India’s premier national policy think tank, the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog), on thought leadership for clean energy and mobility transformation. We are further working with the Department of Heavy Industry on accelerating the roll out of electric buses in India under the FAME Scheme and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on the government’s flagship smart cities initiative. We work with many additional government and industry experts to explore technologies, business models, and policies and to develop actionable steps to help India achieve an advanced mobility and energy future.

Energy Storage

We support India’s ambitious renewable energy and clean mobility goals by partnering with leaders in the government and the private sector on projects at the national, state, and city levels.

In support of its commitment to promote renewable energy and electric vehicles in the country, India has the opportunity to assume a global leadership position in battery manufacturing and consider new policy commitments to achieve it.

We aim to facilitate collaboration between electricity-sector stakeholders, through thought leadership, and national learning platforms in areas such as system integration and optimization, renewable energy, smart integration of electric vehicles, and rural electrification.

RMI India is an ongoing advisor and is supporting the execution of NITI Aayog’s flagship EV and energy storage initiative.

We are working with DISCOMs, consumers, and government actors in stakeholder sessions to understand their needs and coordinate on how reform and new business models can best meet electricity demands and improve service through advanced generation strategies.

Electricity

Creating pathways to support integrated clean energy portfolios in Indian utilities. NITI Aayog, RMI India, and RMI have partnered to launch the Discom Transformation Platform. The Platform is designed to demonstrate the value of integrated clean energy portfolios, scale existing examples of effective solutions, develop cutting edge pilot projects, and enable increased coordination, collaboration, and sharing of learnings across the ecosystem of power sector stakeholders

Financially viable discoms are essential to the future stability of India’s economy. But many discoms are currently suffering from a number of financial and infrastructure challenges. The intersection of renewable energy, energy storage, electric mobility, and demand flexibility presents an emerging opportunity for India’s discoms to integrate portfolios of clean energy technologies. If designed to work together, these portfolios can create enhanced value for customers and improve the financial performance of discoms.
RMI India works with NITI Aayog to administer the Lighthouse Discom program. The program brings together discoms, think tanks, state electricity boards, central regulatory bodies, consumers, and the private sector to prepare discoms for a future of high shares of renewable generation, rapid adoption of electric mobility, and the integration of demand-side flexibility.

HIRING FAQS

We love welcoming talented individuals who have a passion for our mission and vision to the team! Staff and leadership are very involved in the hiring process and time is taken to thoughtfully assess applications.

Submitting an application using the online system is the best way to ensure your materials are properly reviewed. If you are having trouble accessing a job posting or submitting your application, please email [email protected]. Due to the large number of applications we are managing, general inquiries will not receive a response.

Case questions are used as a part of the hiring process for positions on the Research and Collaboration (R&C) team, specifically Associate, Senior Associate, and Manager positions. These types of questions are used to assess a number of capabilities including: conceptual and analytical problem solving, structured thinking, and communication skills.

Case questions are not intended to test industry knowledge; instead they are designed to test your thinking process. It is important to have a structured approach, think out loud, and express your curiosity and creativity.

It is recommended you have pencil/pen and paper handy for phone and in-person interviews. We encourage you to seek out examples of general questions, which are readily available online.

Fellowships are typically 11–12 months of full-time employment and a stipend is provided. Transportation and housing support are not provided.

We invite all qualified students to apply for fellowships, however, given the nature of our project work, we have found the level of analytical and conceptual problem-solving skills necessary is better aligned with graduate-level studies.

We will contact you for an interview if your background fits our needs. If you do not hear from us, know that we wish you the best in your career search.
