Well it only took me forty eight weeks to realize that I missed Livejournal. I wasn't keeping up with you guys and I wasn't keeping up with my own blog... I just kinda let it all slide nice and easy.

It's a brand new day. As such, I also have a brand new Livejournal account: macgeekbear

I've added most of you to my new friends list, if I missed any I'm sure you'll show back up and we'll get that remedied.

Hey there guys!

It's been awhile since I checked in... so first a big howdy and a hug to everyone.

Second, I'm curious if you guys could make some suggestions for a good (and free) RSS reader for Windows. Seeing as how I'm stuck on a PC at work for most of the day... I need to see about finding a better program to view my feeds. To date I've been using Abilon... but my gut tells me there's probably something better out there... any suggestions?

Also on the subject of RSS... my new blog/site is coming along nicely. I was hoping to go live at the beginning of the year but wasn't really happy with what I had lined up on the first. Since then, the new iLife suite came out and let me just say... EVERYTHING that I wanted to do with my blog has now suddenly been made nearly effortless. So I'm hoping to go live on Feb. 1st. I will issue an announcement when I do. :)

Have a great one! Oh and if you have a suggestion for me - the PC RSS reader, I'd appreciate it!

RJ

You know, being in a wonderfully healthy place in my life right now... it's funny when a song sneaks up and reminds you what a total schmuck you've been to yourself in the past.
"What are Gadgets? Gadgets are a new category of mini-application designed to provide information, useful lookup, or enhance an application or service on your Windows PC or the Web. Examples might include a weather gadget running on your desktop or on your homepage, an RSS Gadget that pulls in your favorite feeds, or an extension of a business application providing just-in-time status on the pulse of your business." If you're curious, you can see their screenshots at: MS Gadgets

Actually, no... I really didn't wonder, cos it's already being done with Dashboard Widgets which have been a huge hit in Mac OS X Tiger - which has been shipping for months now. Also available in a different form in Yahoo! Konfabulator (which look similar to dashboard widgets but use a different technology underneath and have been available for a couple of years).

Oh and I hope you liked the brushed metal appearance in iTunes - cos Microsoft has made that idea their own too. If you upgrade to Microsoft Office 12 for Windows - that's exactly what you'll get. You can preview the "new" look they unveiled for Office here: Office 12 New Look

Fortunately, the brushed metal look is SO last year and Apple has already dropped it starting with iTunes 5.

Can they even BEGIN to form a somewhat original idea in Redmond?

I'll also take this opportunity to remind you that because of time constraints - several features which were promised in Longhorn have been cut from "Vista" - they don't even have their security and other truly needed features done yet and they're promising new stuff real quick just so they can catch up with the Mac. If MS weren't so busy trying to play catch up, or more accurately, match up... with the Mac, maybe they could get their OWN stuff to work... oh and perhaps give a crap about the security of your userbase.

It's almost creepy if it weren't so tragic. I feel like I'm watching Single White Female only with OSes.

Someone needs to tell Ballmer and Gates that you can't lead by following, no matter what your sucker, I mean, market share might be. ;)

They were out of the black ones but the white one is just as cool. I friggin' LOVE this thing.

I've been like Goldilocks. Last fall i got a 20 GB iPod. I loved it. The iPod shuffle came out and I had to re-evaluate my listening habits and it was then I realized that I just don't listen to that many different albums and something smaller would be nicer for my ride/walk to work everyday. I'm a creature of habit and have my favorite songs. So I got an iPod shuffle and loved it. I missed my screen though... especially for podcasts. The iPod nano came out... and let me just say, this unit is perfect.

I felt like a heel having a 20gb iPod and a Shuffle. Having two iPods didn't make sense and felt awkward. The multiple iPods have been my way of trying the various types of porridge to see which one was right. I tell you, the iPod nano is JUST RIGHT. Fortunately I think I've already got buyers lined up for the other two (having three iPods is just plain greedy). hehe

But anyway.... the color screen is amazing. The resolution is high enough that while technically smaller than your standard iPod, things look crisper on it. Photos pop.

It slides easily into the coin pocket on my Levi's - fits better than my shuffle did in fact. Also, since you put it in there upside down (the headphone jack is on the bottom), you naturally discover that if you press gently you can actually control the volume right through the denim on the touch sensitive click wheel.

If you haven't seen one in person yet, you need to. They're incredible little units. You can't understand how small, light, easy to use and simply spectacular these machines are. I think they've finally perfected the portable audio player for those of us who don't need more than 2 GB (though there's also a 4 GB available) of music at once.

And, he added, the Bush administration is covering up the danger.

In an exclusive interview, Hugh Kaufman, an expert on toxic waste and responses to environmental disasters at the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), said the way the polluted water was being pumped out was increasing the danger to health.

The pollution was far worse than had been admitted, he said, because his agency was failing to take enough samples and was refusing to make public the results of those it had analysed. "Inept political hacks" running the clean-up will imperil the health of low-income migrant workers by getting them to do the work.

His intervention came as President Bush's approval ratings fell below 40 per cent for the first time. Yesterday, Britain's Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, turned the screw by criticising the US President's opposition to the Kyoto protocol on global warming. He compared New Orleans to island nations such as the Maldives, which are threatened by rising sea levels. Other US sources spelt out the extent of the danger from one of America's most polluted industrial areas, known locally as "Cancer Alley". The 66 chemical plants, refineries and petroleum storage depots churn out 600m lb of toxic waste each year. Other dangerous substances are in site storage tanks or at the port of New Orleans. No one knows how much pollution has escaped through damaged plants and leaking pipes into the "toxic gumbo" now drowning the city. Mr Kaufman says no one is trying to find out.

Few people are better qualified to judge the extent of the problem. Mr Kaufman, who has been with the EPA since it was founded 35 years ago, helped to set up its hazardous waste programme. After serving as chief investigator to the EPA's ombudsman, he is now senior policy analyst in its Office of Solid Wastes and Emergency Response. He said the clean-up needed to be "the most massive public works exercise ever done", adding: "It will take 10 years to get everything up and running and safe."

Mr Kaufman claimed the Bush administration was playing down the need for a clean-up: the EPA has not been included in the core White House group tackling the crisis. "Its budget has been cut and inept political hacks have been put in key positions," Mr Kaufman said. "All the money for emergency response has gone to buy guns and cowboys - which don't do anything when a hurricane hits. We were less prepared for this than we would have been on 10 September 2001."

He said the water being pumped out of the city was not being tested for pollution and would damage Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi river, and endanger people using it downstream.
---
Once again, you will find the original story link at: http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/article311818.ece

I told my husband that I would be home by midnight, "I promise!" Well, the hours passed and the margaritas went down way too easy. Around 3 a.m., a bit loaded, I headed for home.

Just as I got in the door, the cuckoo clock in the hall started up and cuckooed 3 times. Quickly, realizing my husband would probably wake up, I cuckooed another 9 times. I was really proud of myself for coming up with such a quick-witted solution, in order to escape a possible conflict with him. (Even when totally smashed...3 cuckoos plus 9 cuckoos totals 12 cuckoos = MIDNITE!)

The next morning my husband asked me what time I got in, and I told him "Midnight". He didn't seem pissed off at all. Whew! Got away with that one! Then he said, "We need a new cuckoo clock." When I asked him why?, he said, "Well, last night our clock cuckooed three times, then said, "Oh shit.", cuckooed 4 more times, cleared it's throat, cuckooed another 3 times, giggled, cuckooed twice more, and then tripped over the coffee table and farted."
---

So from this netscape "news" article about America's 10 most dangerous jobs... are we to assume that Gay Lumberjack is one of them, based on this picture? ;)

Sleep schedule blues...

So it's 4am and I'm wide awake.

Friday night we had a couple we met online over and had a lot of fun. The younger cubs we were hanging with were real sweethearts and we spent the evening eating pizza, drinking beer and Jaeger while listening to music, watching Strangers with Candy and Drawn Together episodes.

It was a lot of fun, but then after we all finally crashed at around 5a, we all got back up around 9 or 10 am. We ate cereal and hung out some more and then they headed out. Follow that with a fair sized hangover and a couple of naps during the afternoon and my sleep schedule is way out of whack.

Lot of fun to hang out with a really cool couple, but what can I say... I'm gettin' too damn old for this kind of stuff. hehe

Let me just say, if you haven't seen today's rocketboom and you're a fan of cute bearded guys, well get your butt over there! ;)

They show this guy who did a Dance Dance Revolution type game where you stomp on the faces of our current administration and put them in jail. It kicks ass.

Did I mention the pure woofage factor? I present to you a screen capture:

Rocketboom is always a fantastic show to watch and Amanda Congdon rocks.
