Conversation
Longer version of what originally appeared in Haiku Shack, Issue #5; theme "Silence"
You look at me with those smiling eyes
and pull me close — no words,
just breath and quiet.
I feel the warmth of your soft exhale on my head,
your fingers tracing slow paths down my back.
You push me away, just far enough
to tilt my head and look at me —
your eyes asking a million questions
I answer in complete silence.
You find what you were searching for
and pull me in again,
tucking me into that sweet space
between your chin and chest.
I nestle there, content.
We’ve spoken volumes
without saying a word.
Later we lie in comfortable silence,
legs tangled together,
reading,
simply being.
Hours pass without a word —
and still,
it’s the best conversation
I’ve ever had.
