Borrowed Sunlight
seven deadly sins to virtues series: part 2
For a while now I’ve been wanting to dive into the seven deadly sins. I’ve always been drawn to the way sin can turn into virtue and that’s what I’ve mirrored in this series. I have left the sin and virtue out in hopes that the writing will speak for itself and give it away. I hope you enjoy this series as much as I’ve enjoyed researching and creating it. I can already see other ways to expand and perhaps in the future I will! Happy reading!
Water swirls around me, I wade in its shallows, far from my spoken home.
I watch her, as I often do, collecting shells off the damp sand, little treasures beholden to her hands. It pleases her, this collection. Me? I turn inward, afraid of my own reflection in the waves.
Wind blows across the surface, my hair stuck in place, wet and dull, while hers billows in the breeze, rays of golden string under the evening sun. She moves effortlessly, happy, solid in her step. Something I can only dream, but will never have.
A storm rumbles in the distance, echoing the ache in my soul, as if the clouds are luring a siren with her own song. My eyes are unblinking as I follow her path. Perhaps she will slip from the rocks, into my reach and I can show her the treasures she desires at the bottom of the deep.
The dark, where no light can reach. She wouldn’t find them as pretty there, no, certainly not. She is carefree, unknowing to the ocean’s tide. Unaware she is being watched by me, maybe it is but a bargain she will seek.
A swap. A trading of lives.
The song slips from my lips, low and melodic, the waves carry it to her feet and kiss her skin. Her eyes lift just as I sink below, watching through glass water. I observe her from my safe place, slithering through the water closer yet. She turns, following the whisper of my soul. She hears the call.
How unfair of her, to strut on these shores, while I am confined to this aquatic prison. While she dances under the sun, the earth her canvas, I am bound to the shallows, the depths of the dark, hidden in the shadows.
Everyone is curious, yet few venture my way, the land a steady grounding plate. My eyes burn green, their glow a beacon for her to see. She walks to the rocks, foam splashes against them.
I watch her and she leans in, our gazes meet, mirrored souls, worlds apart. I’m ready to strike, she’s close enough to touch, but somewhere in the distance, lighting cracks. She looks up, and retreats without another glance.
The sun begins to fade and I curse it, wanting to drown with her in the borrowed sunlight.
As I sink back to the depths, the storm rages overhead, glimpses of light breach the depths, like underwater fireworks. I still in the abyss, the water a welcome comfort, washing over my wounds like a liquid bandaid, soothing the ache of my soul.
Another flash of lightning illuminates my underwater world, and for a moment, I see the beauty, for a moment, I can float weightless in the comfort of my home.

This is so brilliant, Rion! I think I know which sin to virtue this is, but I’ll let others guess because I’m not entirely sure.
i absolutely love love love this one — i’m obsessed with water and the sea and sirens and mermaids and they fit soooo perfectly with the sin of jealousy!
