Get it! It&#8217;s pretty useful for DIY Malay wedding planning process!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To pay for all\/most of these costs, I originally budgeted RM70,000-RM90,000 in our budget kahwin, broken down like so:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>RM35,000-RM45,000 from my side, and<\/li><li>RM35,000-RM45,000 from his side, plus<\/li><li>An extra RM7,000-RM9,000 or 10% set aside as contingency <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>(what can I say. Both our parents have a lot of friends)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-i-ended-up-spending-on-my-malay-wedding\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_I_Ended_Up_Spending_on_My_Malay_Wedding\"><\/span>What I Ended Up Spending on My Malay Wedding <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p> Actually, I spent a total of RM12,062.09 on my Malay wedding. This was an incredibly low amount, as far as Malay weddings go. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if you take out all the services that were cancelled due to MCO, then effectively I only spent <strong>RM5,247.09<\/strong> for my Malay wedding. It became a total budget kahwin and nikah ceremony. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were four reasons it costs so low, and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">none of them<\/span> have anything to do with my money management skills, and everything to do with the pandemic:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1-we-had-to-cancel-engagement-and-reception-events\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_%E2%80%93_We_had_to_cancel_engagement_AND_reception_events\"><\/span>#1 &#8211; We had to cancel engagement AND reception events<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Reason #1 why my wedding cost was so low is simply because we had to cancel both the engagement AND the reception events due to the pandemic. The former was <em>supposed <\/em>to be in July 2020 before cancelled due to MCO 1.0, and the latter was planned on November 2020 <em>before <\/em>postponed to January 2021 <em>before <\/em>cancelled due to MCO 2.0. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Naturally, because the events didn&#8217;t happen, the things we need to tick off from our checklist kahwin significantly reduced. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But just because the events didn&#8217;t happen, doesn&#8217;t mean no costs were incurred. We managed to get our deposit back for the engagement event, but I still spent:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>RM4,150 for the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">deposit at reception venue<\/span>,<\/li><li>RM2,000 for the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">family&#8217;s reception outfits<\/span>, <\/li><li>RM415 for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">wedding cards<\/span> package (anyone know how I can repurpose or upcycle these cards?), and<\/li><li>RM250 for non-refundable deposit for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">makeup artist<\/span> <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So that&#8217;s a total of <strong>RM6,815 <\/strong>for unused items and services.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-we-had-the-nikah-ceremony-at-my-parent-s-home\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_%E2%80%93_We_had_the_nikah_ceremony_at_my_parents_home\"><\/span>#2 &#8211; We had the nikah ceremony at my parent&#8217;s home<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Event rental is one of the items in checklist kahwin. Therefore by having the nikah ceremony at home, the event venue cost became RM0 (even if I did spend RM6,230 for bridal room renovation, but that&#8217;s under Donations category not Wedding).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The decision to hold the nikah ceremony at home wasn&#8217;t intentional &#8211; it was just the most flexible option, considering the ever-changing nikah SOP at the time. We made the decision after giving up our original 14 November 2020 (Saturday) date by mid-October. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully, by late October JAIS gave us a nikah slot and we got married on Wednesday, 3pm on 25 November 2020 at JAIS office, before celebrating with close family at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8230; True story: the only reason why we got a nikah date in Nov (instead of Dec\/Jan since only 5 couples is allowed per day) is because another couple dropped out and a slot opened up<br><br>Wonder what happened to them \ud83d\ude14 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/USxAFcsrJt\">https:\/\/t.co\/USxAFcsrJt<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Suraya | suraya.eth (@surayaror) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/surayaror\/status\/1327192853039071233?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 13, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you take out all the reception-that-didn&#8217;t-happen expenses in #1, effectively I only spent <strong>RM5,247.09<\/strong> for my nikah ceremony (RM12,062.09 minus RM6,815). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of this, I spent:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>RM2000 (approx) on <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">dulang hantaran gifts<\/span>, <\/li><li>RM1000 on <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">catering<\/span>, <\/li><li>RM1000 for the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">pelamin<\/span>,<\/li><li>RM450 for his <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ring<\/span>, <\/li><li>RM469 for my <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">outfit<\/span>,<\/li><li>Approx RM100 for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">required paperwork<\/span> (RM50 for marriage course, RM1 for HIV test, etc)<\/li><li>And other odds and ends<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>P\/s &#8211; In case you&#8217;re not familiar with Malay wedding &#8211; nikah ceremony is like ROM; we usually do it on the same day\/weekend as the wedding reception <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-received-gifts-and-help-from-family-and-friends\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_%E2%80%93_Received_gifts_and_help_from_family_and_friends\"><\/span>#3 &#8211; Received gifts and help from family and friends<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve always found it hard to <em>receive<\/em> help, but throughout this whole process I reminded myself that many people get a lot of joy from helping (me too, tbh), so I let them cover part of the checklist kahwin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Top of my head, I was gifted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>A <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">flower bouquet<\/span> from my childhood friend (thank you Shukie!)<\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Photography and videography<\/span> session from my wonderful family-in-law<\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Bridal accessories<\/span> (shoes, white face mask, white shawl, jewellery, veil etc) from my mom and sisters<\/li><li>A <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">facial session<\/span> one day before nikah day from my sister <\/li><li>A couple of<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> hantaran gifts <\/span>from my and his family members<\/li><li>As well as countless hours of unpaid labour from family members throughout the planning process, including researching and hiring vendors on my behalf<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Their special touches made the day more special and eventful than I could ever imagine.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-bought-ready-made-and-diy-ed\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_%E2%80%93_Bought_ready-made_and_DIY-ed\"><\/span>#4 &#8211; Bought ready-made and DIY-ed<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another thing that contributed to my low Malay wedding cost was the lack of custom-made items and personalised services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tbh, this was less of a cost-saving measure and primarily to limit close contact &#8211; I know I have cheap tendencies but I didn&#8217;t want to save money for the sake of saving money, especially not to the ailing and hard-hit wedding industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For my nikah event, I:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Bought <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ready-made white dress <\/span>(cost: RM469 including scarf and heels) instead of custom-made wedding dress (RM1000++)<\/li><li>DIY-ed my <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">henna<\/span> with inai celup (cost: RM28 including delivery) instead of hiring a henna artist (RM200++)<\/li><li>DIY-ed my <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">hairdo <\/span>&#8211; went to hair saloon to get a professional hair blow-drying session on the morning of the event instead of getting a hairdresser to come over (mostly because we couldn&#8217;t get one in time, but it turned out well, so hey)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Ngl I would have done my own makeup too (considering the close proximity), except that I know my makeup skills is practically non-existent, so a professional it is. Thankfully nothing happened. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-much-was-your-malay-wedding\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_much_was_your_Malay_wedding\"><\/span>How much was your Malay wedding?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So that&#8217;s it. Those are the 4 reasons why my Malay wedding costs so little. If I had the reception, it would have added a mere ~RM4k or so to the total, but alas it was not meant to happen. I&#8217;m okay with the cancellation, but I know my parents are disappointed so that makes me a little bit sad. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Can you share how much was your Malay wedding, all-in-all?
