Why Personalizing AI is the New Automation Trap
In the early 1980s, General Motors believed it was on the cusp of a revolution. They poured forty billion dollars into robots, hoping to rescue American manufacturing through sheer automation. The plan was simple: place a robot exactly where a human worker once stood. GM preserved the old workflows, the same job classifications, and the same assembly line pacing. They treated machines as compliant substitutes for labor rather than catalysts for a new way of working.
It failed. By trying to automate the past, they merely ‘paved the cow path,’ ultimately ceding global leadership in manufacturing by severing the vital connection between thinking and doing. By outsourcing the ‘doing’ to machines without evolving the ‘thinking’ of the system, leadership lost the hands-on intuition required for true innovation, leaving a hollowed-out industry where execution was automated but the soul of craftsmanship had been discarded.
Toyota took a different route. They didn’t just add machines; they examined how new capabilities changed the logic of the entire production system. AI is our James Webb. It grants us the foresight and synthesis to solve “wicked problems” that have previously been unsolvable. We aren’t just doing old jobs faster; we are solving types of challenges we have never been able to touch before:
Urban Planning: Simulating thousands of zoning configurations in seconds to find the one that prioritizes human joy and long-term sustainability.
