Chicago-bound!

I will be in Chicago this Wednesday through Sunday for VividCon, first time back in four years! Tentatively planning on dropping off luggage at the hotel on Wednesday morning and heading into the city to do some sightseeing. Not sure what I will do on Thursday. Possibly more of the same in the morning, then back to the hotel to greet people as they arrive.

Anyone free for dinner Wednesday night?

Also, if anyone is still on LJ, this will be my last crosspost. I can't quite bring myself to let LJ go completely. For one, I spent way too much time fixing links after I messed up my website earlier this year. Anyway, I spend a lot less time online these days, so LJ's shenanigans plus keeping track of two journals was getting to be too much.

My favorite video this year (of my own):
1941. I had so much fun with both the source and song, and I think it shows. And the violin break is my favorite part.

My least favorite video this year:
Show Me the Way. I ended up not really enjoying the movie much, so I didn't have a whole lot of fun making the vid.

Most successful video:
1941, by far.

Video most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Mirrorage, maybe?

Most fun video:
1941 followed by The Walker. I mention The Walker because it turned out to be such a palate cleanser after making Show Me the Way.

Video with single sexiest moment:
This probably goes to the Peggy/Dottie kiss in 1941.

Biggest vid fail:
As much as I love 1941, I wish I did more to brighten some of the footage. Agent Carter is just so darkly lit sometimes.

Hardest video to make:
Show Me the Way. Every moment of making the vid was a chore. It's a good thing I enjoyed the song or the vid would never have been made.

Most unintentionally telling video:
Uh, I have no idea how to answer this one this year.

The things I've learned this year:
It's tough to make a video by request (Mirrorage) for someone who hasn't finished watching the source.

For 2016:
I have no plans other than maybe trying to do some fancy titles with HitFilm (fancy software that came with my copy of Vegas).

Dear Festividder,

Thank you so much for offering to make a vid this year! Bottom line is I hope you have at least some fun making whatever you can.

Anyway, copying some of previous years' posts...

Music:
The music suggestions I made are only suggestions, but I made them in case you need some direction. Otherwise, I'm open to any kind of music that you think will work for your vid. I've loved or made vids to songs I wouldn't normally listen to. I will say when it comes to vids, I tend to prefer songs with strong melodies and some sort of build.

General vidding preferences:
I love all kinds of vidding styles, from those with clean and straightforward cutting to those with fancy effects, and I'm open to any sort of genre from drama to comedy, romance to action, and everything in between. For Festivids, I'd like that your vid showcase the universe of the source you choose, and be accessible to those who are unfamiliar with it. This might be easier with an overview vid, but if a character study or relationship vid is more your thing, I'd prefer that your vid have a sense of how those characters interact with the world around them.

Dune/Children of Dune [TV]
Music: Something epic sounding
Can't say that I prefer the first mini series over the David Lynch movie, but a lot of the costumes were gorgeous for sure. And the second mini series has James McAvoy.

Flight of the Navigator [Movie] (Safety)
Music: 80's pop/pop rock/alt rock
I swear I watched this movie every time it aired on TV when I was a kid - that's how much I loved it.

Minority Report (2015) [TV]
Music: Open
It's looking like this series may not have a long run. Even so, I'm enjoying it enough that I'd love to see at least some of it captured in vid form.

Quantico (2015) [TV]
Music: Open
I have no idea where this show is heading, but I'm enjoying the ride so far. Plus Priyanka Chopra is just so incredibly charismatic.

The Tomorrow People (1992) [TV]
Music: Maybe 90's pop/pop rock
This is the 90's version of the series that aired on Nickelodeon in the US. An overview vid of this sci-fi show of my youth so that others can witness its adorable cheesiness would be fantastic. If the entire series is too much to tackle, my favorite storyline is "The Rameses Connection" which features a young Naomie Harris and Christopher Lee as the baddie.

The Secret World of Alex Mack (1994) [TV]
Music: Maybe 90's upbeat pop
Yet another 90's sci-fi show that aired on Nickelodeon that was adorably cheesy.

Vanishing Son series (1994-1995) [TV]
I remember the series a bit more than the TV movies that preceded it, but I can understand if all you can manage to track down is one of the TV movies. Pretty much as long as you have some Russell Wong fake-playing the violin and some martials arts in your vid, I'll be a happy camper.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit [Movie] (Safety)
Music: Something upbeat, maybe electroswing
This was one of the first movies I remember having seen in the theaters. The Dip scene with the shoe is horrifying to this day. The movie is amazing, nonetheless.

My favorite video this year (of my own):
Radioactive. This was the first vid in a couple years that I didn't make for an exchange or a con, and I had the most fun making this one.

My least favorite video this year:
99 Problems, I guess? I made it just for the sake of making a vid, and I never really had a fannish attachment to the source.

Most successful video:
Losing My Religion. It helped to have a popular source set to familiar lyrics.

Video most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Smash Up. Though at 7 minutes, the length alone would be enough to scare people away.

Most fun video:
Work Bitch. So many things made this vid the most fun, from the ridiculous song to the gorgeous source. I had a lot of fun with effects in this one too.

Video with single sexiest moment:
Hmm, I'm particularly fond of how the ballet within the movie lined up with the instrumental bridge in Toxic. How Moira Shearer's character loses herself in the dance paired with the wild beats of the music is something I find pretty sexy.

Biggest vid fail:
I ran out of steam making Smash Up and I think it shows. Plus I had some sourcing issues that I didn't feel like figuring out how to fix before posting the vid.

Hardest video to make:
Smash Up was technically the most difficult (especially the meta section, OMG). Losing My Religion was the most emotionally taxing.

Most unintentionally telling video:
Who knew that I shipped Steve/Sam? I didn't until I made A Thousand Miles.

The things I've learned this year:
I learned how to manipulate text a bit more with the titler in Sony Vegas. And I learned that some of my more successful vids are the ones I just let happen instead of trying to force them into being.

For 2015:
Smash Up was that "sorta ambitious vid bunny" I pointed out in last year's meme. I missed the target of VividCon Premieres by a few months, but I'm actually glad that didn't end up premiering at a con. Too much pressure. For 2015, I gotta finish my Festivid first. After that, I don't have any vid plans, so we'll see how the year pans out.

Music:
The music suggestions I made are only suggestions, but I made them in case you need some direction. Otherwise, I'm open to any kind of music that you think will work for your vid. I've loved or made vids to songs I wouldn't normally listen to. I will say when it comes to vids, I tend to prefer songs with strong melodies and some sort of build.

General vidding preferences:
I love all kinds of vidding styles, from those with clean and straightforward cutting to those with fancy effects, and I'm open to any sort of genre from drama to comedy, romance to action, and everything in between. For Festivids, I'd like that your vid showcase the universe of the souce you choose, and be accessible to those who are unfamiliar with it. This might be easier with an overview vid, but if a character study or relationship vid is more your thing, I'd prefer that your vid have a sense of how those characters interact with the world around them.

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure/Bogus Journey [Movie]
Music: Something upbeat
Whoa. These movies are so ridiculous! If you need to narrow it down, I prefer the first movie over the second, but I'd love any vid that captures Bill and Ted's wacky hijinks.

The Crow: Stairway to Heaven [TV]
Music: Maybe 90's-00's alt rock
This is one of those shows that had so much promise at the end of its first and only season. It spins off from the original movie (the one with Brandon Lee), and goes off in a different direction. Eric Draven starts to seek redemption rather than revenge. Sadly, the show suffered from airing at odd and inconvenient hours. Anyway, an action-oriented overview could be so much fun. If a character study is more your thing, I'd be happy with that too. I'm especially fond of the three main characters Eric Draven, Daryl Albrecht, and Sarah Mohr.

The Cutting Edge [Movie]
Music: Open
Two words: TOE PICK! (I know there was at least one sequel to the original movie. I'd much prefer that any vid focus on the first movie only.)

Square One Television (1987) [TV]
Music: Something pop, or maybe a math-related song such as one from the show itself, e.g. "The Mathematics of Love"
I loved so many of the educational shows on PBS growing up, and this was one of my favorites. From Mathnet to Mathman, there were so many memorable moments on this show that to this day still help me remember tidbits about math. You could do some sort of overview vid for the whole show or narrow it down to one of the segments such as Mathnet. A vid for this show would be the ultimate mathvid.

The Tomorrow People (1992) [TV]
Music: Open, perhaps 90's pop/pop rock
This is the 90's reboot (not the reboot currently airing) of the 70's series of the same name. An overview vid of this sci-fi show of my youth so that others can witness its adorable cheesiness would be fantastic. If the entire series is too much to tackle, my favorite storyline is "The Rameses Connection." (Wee Naomie Harris! Christopher Lee! Rollerblading/car chase!) This series is a bit harder to acquire, but I was able to get it on DVD from Amazon UK.

Wing Chun (1994) [Movie] (Safety)
Music: Something upbeat, maybe an instrumental
Four words: Michelle Yeoh and tofu. All kidding aside, your vid doesn't have to focus solely on that scene, but that's the one I remember most. Mostly, I'd love to see a vid that showcases Michelle Yeoh and all the jaw-dropping martial arts action.

This started off as a silly idea where I initially thought about vidding "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" for Steve/Sam (because of all that running...). I pitched this to elipie, and ended up changing the song to "A Thousand Miles" (because of all that falling, into the sky...). This turned out to be completely earnest, and I had way more feelings than I anticipated having while making this vid. Big thanks to both elipie and kuwdora for cheerleading.

I'm waking up.

Some time between Festivids Go-Live and Festivids reveals, I got the urge to vid something just for the hell of it. Specifically, I wanted to vid something with a lot of action and some fast cutting. I decidied I wanted to vid this latest version of "The Tomorrow People" during the hiatus. When I heard Kendrick Lamar's verse in this version of "Radioactive," I was sold. This vid is my id on display. It's over the top (especially with the number of teleports), and I'm fully aware how ridiculous some of the literal lyric matching might be. But I don't care! I had too much fun making this vid. :D

Also of note, the last time I made a vid that wasn't for a con or fest was during the Olympics in 2012. Having the Olympics on in the background is oddly motivating.

Wandered here from far away.

I had the DVDs for Carnivàle for years before I finally got around to watching them last fall. This was right about when people started talking about Festivids, so I figured I'd try to keep quiet about watching the show in case someone requested it. The one time I slipped was when I mentioned to raspberry_splat about watching Carnivàle followed by Sleepy Hollow, and hearing Clancy Brown quoting the Book of Revelation in both.

Another coincidence* in this tale is that destina turned out to be the only person who requested the show, and the only potential song I had was this Nine Inch Nails song. I didn't even think of focusing on Jonesy until I read Destina's Dear Festividder letter.

Keeping quiet about this vid was hard. There were new-to-me structural elements that I wanted to run by a beta, but then I also wanted to try to keep this super secret for Festivids. It's a huge relief now that the anonymous period is over.

For another take on Jonesy, please see The Boxer by bisclaveret! I love the song choice here; the cover version works well for Jonesy. Bisclavaret's vid really shows more facets of Jonesy and the people around him in the strange world that is Carnivàle.
