CHARACTER
NAME: Yuusuke Urameshi
SERIES: Yu Yu Hakusho
TIMELINE: Post-series
BACKGROUND: * At first glance, Yuusuke Urameshi can be considered to be your stereotypical punk delinquent kid. He smokes, drinks, gambles, skips school, has shit for grades, and gets into fights just about every day. Pretty much nobody thought he'd be able to do much of anything, and he didn't honestly care. It wasn't until one day, one selfless act would change his life forever.
* After trying to cheer a kid up and keep him from playing in the street, Yuusuke ends up having to save the dumb kid when he runs into the street after his ball. He dives in the way of an oncoming car, and is struck and killed instantly, but also saving the child's life. (or so he thinks.)
* Upon dying and flipping shit at being a ghost (and who can blame him, honestly), he's greeted by Botan, an atypical version of the Grim Reaper. She then explains that his “noble sacrifice” was for nothing – the child was supposed to be struck and would've lived – the ball was to act as a cushion for him. Dumbstruck, Yuusuke starts bitching about that, to which Botan offers to allow him to come back to life. He declines, saying how “nobody would miss him”.
* Yuusuke's mind changes after he attends his wake, where people he knows pay their condolences to his mother. Atsuko (his mother) is extremely distraught about losing her son. Keiko (his classmate and eventual girlfriend) sobs uncontrollably, yelling Yuusuke's name. Kuwabara appears, angry and upset that Yuusuke died before they could finish their battles, even screaming that he should've been the one to kill Yuusuke. Understanding that he meant more to others than he let on, he decides to come back.
* Yuusuke is given an egg by Koenma, acting lord of Spirit World, and is told that it will hatch a Spirit Beast, which will help him get back to life. However, he must be a genuinely good person. If he is evil, the beast will devour him. Yuusuke sacrifices the beast to save Keiko, who had received dreams and messages from Yuusuke's ghost that he would be returning to life, and she needed to take care of his body so that he would be able to return to it. However, a fire starts in Yuusuke's home by a serial arsonist and his body runs the risk of being incinerated. Keiko runs into the fire to protect it, and is trapped in the fire. Yuusuke gave up all the power gained from his good deeds after his death to have Koenma save her. Koenma used this to put out some of the flames and opened up a path for her to escape from the fire.
Due to this incident, with Koenma directly in contact with Yuusuke's soul, he figured that the wave cycle of Yuusuke's power is extremely long (52 years) and has to meet the right time to be resurrected or he would have to wait for another 52 years before the next chance and decided to let Yuusuke return to life earlier even though the fire incident should have delayed the process since his power gained from good deeds were used up. The only way this could work was through “spiritual mouth-to-mouth”, in other words, a kiss.
You can imagine that Urameshi was less-than-pleased.
He tries to send a dream to his mother to tell her, but she was on a drinking binge – that wasn't going to stop anytime soon. He then contacts Kuwabara, but he's too wierded out by the whole thing to even think of taking it seriously. So that left Keiko. Unfortunately, her mother ended up getting ill, which was about to make the whole thing all be for nothing, but Botan possessed Keiko's mom and told her to go to Yuusuke.
She barely made it. :|
* After this, it appeared that Yuusuke has gained some powers while dead. He is able to see ghosts and youkai now, and is eventually "convinced" by Botan and Koenma to become the Reikai Tantei, protecting humanity against the threats of youkai.
* Yuusuke's first mission as the Reikai Tantei is to recover three stolen artifacts from Spirit World. It's during this time that Koenma teaches him his signature attack, the Reigun (Spirit Gun). With this new weapon and Botan's assistance, he's then sent to capture the thieves: Gouki, Kurama, and Hiei. Yuusuke defeats both Gouki and Hiei, and gets Kurama to turn himself in after once again doing something stupidly noble.
* Yuusuke then was sent to the compound of Master Genkai, an aged fighter who was looking for a successor to her powerful Spirit Wave technique. Beforehand, Yuusuke was warned by Botan that a powerful demon, Rando, would be participating in hopes to gain Genkai's techniques as well. Kuwabara was visiting the spiritualist in order to try and control his newly-awakened psychic abilities thanks to Yuusuke, but got dragged into the tournament. Yuusuke defeats him and finds a newfound ally in Kuwabara (grudgingly, at first).
* Yuusuke and Kuwabara then went to Maze Castle to defeat the four Saint Beasts and stop them from taking over the human race with demon parasites. Koenma sent Kurama and Hiei, who were on probation in the human world, to assist. Yuusuke fought his way to Suzaku, the leader of the group, and managed to defeat him, but at the cost of his own life energy. Only Kuwabara, the only human of the group, could save him.
* Yuusuke then goes with Kuwabara and Botan to rescue a beautiful ice apparition named Yukina, of whom Kuwabara becomes smitten. However, Yukina is actually Hiei's twin sister, a fact that Kuwabara and even Yukina herself is unaware of. Yuusuke fights all the way to the Toguro brothers. Yuusuke and Kuwabara defeat them with teamwork and rescue the maiden, but it turns out that the Toguros threw the fight on purpose. The younger Toguro brother coerces Yuusuke to join the Dark Tournament and defeat him in a real fight.
* To prepare for the Dark Tournament, Yuusuke trains with Genkai for two months. Afterward, Yuusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, and Hiei, along with Genkai as 'The Masked Fighter', enter the Dark Tournament as the guest team, Team Urameshi.
* During the tournament, the others find out about the Masked Fighter actually being Genkai, and she gives Yuusuke the last of her powers, knowing that she would probably not make it past this tournament. She's right in that prediction; she dies fighting Toguro. With her last breath, she tells Yuusuke that she and Toguro used to be teammates 50 years prior, and warns him to not become like Toguro.
* In the finals, Yuusuke finally faces off against Toguro, and is pushed to the brink when he “kills” Kuwabara, summoning enough strength to even push Toguro to his limits in the ensuing battle.
* After the tournament, reports of humans gaining strange powers pop up, all centered around one place – and Yuusuke and the other find out that a tunnel to the Makai is being built, and they have little time to wait around for things to develop further.
* During this, they find out that the man behind this is none other than Shinobu Sensui, a former Reikai Tantei that had disappeared ten years ago with a videotape known as Chapter Black – a recording with hours upon hours of humanity's worst crimes upon it. Sensui used this in order to recruit newly-awakened psychics to his cause.
* During Yuusuke's fight against Sensui, he realizes that he can't defeat him with everything he's got at this point, so he decides to let himself be killed (while fighting of course, it's Urameshi, after all) in order to awaken the others' potential.
* What Urameshi didn't know is that through that, it awoke his dormant youkai blood, and we find out that Yuusuke gained that youkai blood through ancestral means and because of his reiki abilities and now his second death at the hands of Sensui, his youkai blood has fully awakened. Puu also changes from being the cute mascot to a giant blue phoenix. :|
* But of course, Urameshi doesn't give a shit and decides to go into the Makai to help the others, since they had followed Sensui inside, and kick his ass. But even with the addition of newfound powers, Yuusuke wasn't strong enough to take him down. It's at this point that Raizen, Yuusuke's ancestral father, possesses his body and kills Yuusuke for him, which Urameshi was none too pleased about, as you could probably imagine. But he chose to come back to the Ningenkai nevertheless.
* However, in the next few weeks, Yuusuke began to become restless, and King Enma fired him from his post as the Reikai Tantei, despite all that he had done for humanity. His reasoning for this move was because he deemed Yuusuke too large of a threat for the Ningenkai through his newfound powers. He was then approached by Raizen's underlings, asking Yuusuke to come back to the Makai to take over since Raizen was dying. Really, the only reason why he accepts is to get the chance to kick the old fart's ass for interfering with his fight against Sensui.
* Once arriving in the Makai, however, Yuusuke finds out that not only Raizen can kick his ass without really trying, but that the other two Makai Lords, Yomi and Mukuro, are at about the same level as the weakened Raizen, plus the fact that the only reason why Raizen was dying was because he stopped eating humans after meeting Yuusuke's ancestor.
* Urameshi trains for about a year before he and Raizen finally have their big match, and after the fight, Raizen tells Yuusuke how he and his ancestor met and how he came to the decision to stop eating humans. It's also here that he warns Yuusuke about the ambitions of the other two, and he tells him how proud he is of him for getting as strong as he has.
* Knowing full well that he's not the ruling type, Yuusuke concocts a plan to hold a tournament for rule of the Makai, where everyone would fight for themselves, and not for their “territories”. Yuusuke himself makes it to the semifinals, where he lost in a close match to Yomi. He wakes up three days later, finding out that one of Raizen's old sparring partners had won the tournament, and had instigated a rule that forbade youkai from interfering with the Ningenkai.
* Yuusuke doesn't go back to the Ningenkai right away, though. Instead, he decides to train a bit more before heading back, surprising everyone while they met up at Genkai's. Afterward, he opens up a ramen stand, using it as a means to cover for his own little “detective agency”, though it's used more for getting autographs and merch from his youkai friends than anything else. It's also shown that during the second Makai Tournament, he enters once again, but this time with the others [Kuwabara, Hiei, and Kurama] by his side.
ABILITIES: By the end of the series, Yuusuke is one of the most powerful characters, able to fire off blasts of chi that are able to decimate entire forests in its wake. He's also able to use devastating salvos of punches that can turn opponents' internal organs into mush or punch through boulders with the greatest of ease. He's got an almost limitless source of energy, andfinally knows how to gauge it accordingly.
… now that would be the case if he were at full capacity.
With the limit placed upon him, he's significantly weaker, even though his punches aren't something to laugh at. His Reigun (signature attack, he aims his right hand like a gun and focuses energy into his fingertip before firing) will have about four or so uses before it's kaput. This is interchangeable with his other attacks (Reikouha, Shotgun, etc.), and since his speed and regeneration also stem from how strong he is, Yuusuke also will probably be considerably slower and it'll be harder for him to heal from injuries – something he's going to be none too pleased about. B|
PERSONALITY: On the surface, Yuusuke seems like nothing more than a punk, and that's a pretty apt description for him at first glance. He's brash, crude, and doesn't seem to care much about anything. However, after talking with him, and being around him, it's fairly obvious that despite his delinquent tendencies, he's actually a pretty decent kid. Sure, he love picking fights, but fighting's one of the few things that he knows helps him vent, and something that he knows he's good at.
But after a while, it's not just about the fights themselves – Yuusuke's got something to prove. He wants to show his opponents not only that he's a force to be reckoned with, but that if you fuck with him or those that he actually cares about, expect to feel his fists digging into your face.
He's really your typical shounen idiot hero – RAGING POWERUPS, running into any and every situation headlong, epic lucky streak and all. Yeah, he's a jerk a lot of the time, but he's a nice guy once you get past all the smartassing. It just takes time.
And despite what some might say, he actually has something of an honor code, though that in and of itself is somewhat messed up, as the fight with Chuu during the Dark Tournament arc showed. He's a self-admitted “combat junkie”, there's honestly nothing that gets him going more than a good fight. He also isn't that stupid, he's just a hell of a lot more street-smart than book-smart; he's come up with fairly creative ideas on the fly during fights in order to find a way to defeat his opponent.
His temper is incredibly short, but he can dish it out and take it – a trait that is only tempered further over the course of the series. And even though Yuusuke does mature some during the series, he's still mostly reckless, impulsive, and prefers to punch first and ask questions later.
