{"id":7490,"date":"2025-10-28T19:01:05","date_gmt":"2025-10-28T19:01:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rehan.com\/?p=7490"},"modified":"2025-10-28T19:01:06","modified_gmt":"2025-10-28T19:01:06","slug":"new-word-rish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rehan.com\/new-word-rish\/","title":{"rendered":"Let Me Introduce You to a New Word: RISH"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Let Me Introduce You to a New Word: RISH<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By Rehan Allahwala \u2013 2025<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Language is humanity\u2019s mirror.<br>It grows when we grow.<br>Every century, new inventions, ideas, and emotions enter our world \u2014 and with them, new words.<br>Once there was no \u201cbread,\u201d only baked grain.<br>No \u201cpasta,\u201d only boiled dough.<br>No \u201cinternet,\u201d no \u201cemoji,\u201d no \u201cpodcast.\u201d<br>Each new word begins when someone notices that something exists \u2014 but doesn\u2019t yet have a name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And so, in 2025, I noticed something missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Half of humanity eats rice every single day.<br>We have biryani, pulao, paella, nasi goreng, risotto, jollof, bibimbap, khao pad, arroz con pollo, sushi, kheer \u2014 hundreds of unique dishes, across every culture and continent.<br>But there is no single English word that means \u201ca dish made from rice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We say rice dish or rice meal \u2014 but that\u2019s not language, that\u2019s description.<br>We don\u2019t call bread \u201cwheat food,\u201d or pasta \u201cflour shapes.\u201d<br>Why should rice, the foundation of billions of lives, not have its own universal identity?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, let me introduce you to a new word:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2e3b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83e\udeb6 RISH (noun)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pronunciation: \/r\u026a\u0283\/ \u2014 rhymes with wish<br>Plural: Rishes<br>Adjective: Rishy (relating to rice)<br>Etymology: Modern English blend of rice + dish<br>Coined by: Rehan Allahwala (2025)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Definition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any prepared dish whose primary ingredient is rice \u2014 cooked, seasoned, or combined with other ingredients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples:<br>\u2022 \u201cBiryani is my favorite rish.\u201d<br>\u2022 \u201cPaella, nasi goreng, and risotto are all world-famous rishes.\u201d<br>\u2022 \u201cEvery region has its own rish \u2014 some spicy, some sweet, all comforting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2e3b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83c\udf3e What is a Rish?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A rish is any food that turns rice from a grain into a meal \u2014<br>a dish created through human imagination, culture, and taste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of Rishes of the World:<br>\u2022 Biryani (Pakistan\/India) \u2013 a layered, spiced rish with meat or vegetables<br>\u2022 Pulao \/ Pilaf (Persia, Turkey, South Asia) \u2013 a savory rish cooked in broth<br>\u2022 Paella (Spain) \u2013 saffron rish with seafood or chicken<br>\u2022 Khao Pad (Thailand) \u2013 fried rish with eggs and herbs<br>\u2022 Nasi Goreng (Indonesia) \u2013 sweet-spicy fried rish<br>\u2022 Risotto (Italy) \u2013 creamy rish with stock and cheese<br>\u2022 Bibimbap (Korea) \u2013 a mixed rish topped with vegetables and egg<br>\u2022 Jollof Rice (West Africa) \u2013 tomato and chili-based rish<br>\u2022 Arroz con Pollo (Latin America) \u2013 chicken rish<br>\u2022 Kheer (South Asia) \u2013 sweet milk-based rish<br>\u2022 Sushi (Japan) \u2013 vinegared rish served cold with seafood<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every one of these is different \u2014 yet they all belong to one family: the Rishes of our planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2e3b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83c\udf0d Why the world needs this word<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because we are now global citizens.<br>Our languages, foods, and cultures are merging faster than ever before.<br>We watch Japanese shows while eating Pakistani biryani in London and read African recipes on Instagram from Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But our language hasn\u2019t caught up.<br>We lack the vocabulary to describe this global unity of culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating the word Rish gives the world a new linguistic category \u2014<br>a way to recognize and celebrate all rice-based dishes together.<br>It expands our horizon, gives writers and chefs a new word,<br>and gives English \u2014 the world\u2019s bridge language \u2014 the ability to talk about food as a shared human experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can now say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBread unites the West. Pasta defines Italy. Curry speaks for the subcontinent.
