Caffeine is among the best-known components of the two most popular drinks in the world after water: coffee and tea. It is also present in other sources, including energy drinks, soft drinks, chocolate, cocoa, guarana, sport supplements, and some medications. Like other drugs, caffeine can have beneficial or harmful effects on human health, depending on source, use, dose, and patient. Caffeine might also interact with other compounds, including those found in natural products, such as acrylamide, chlorogenic acids, diterpenes, fiber, lipids, melanoidins, and micronutrients. In recent years, research into the health effects of caffeine has increased dramatically, with interesting new clinical implications for cardiovascular health.
