Iron deficiency is an extremely common comorbidity in patients with heart failure. Studies suggest that as many as 40%-70% of patients with chronic heart failure are iron deficient. Whether or not anemia is present, iron deficiency is associated with diminished exercise capability, impairments to health-related quality of life, and poorer outcomes, including cardiovascular mortality. Timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment of iron deficiency in patients with heart failure have been shown to improve patients' heart failure symptoms and quality of life, as well as outcomes.
