Breast cancer is both the most frequently diagnosed life-threatening cancer and the leading cause of cancer death among women worldwide. In Europe, an estimated 374,800 new cases of invasive breast cancer were diagnosed and an estimated 95,800 women died of breast cancer in 2022. The United Nations world population forecast data claim 'there will be 4,781,849 incident cases (4,714,393 women and 67,456 men) and 1,503,694 death cases (1,481,463 women and 22,231 men) of [breast cancer] in the world in 2050.'
Despite advances in adjuvant treatment strategies, many patients with early breast cancer still experience disease recurrence after primary therapy, and approximately 6% of patients are diagnosed with metastatic disease at presentation. Mortality from breast cancer is highly dependent on stage at diagnosis. Given its systemic nature and inevitable resistance to therapy, metastatic breast cancer has historically been challenging to treat, but new agents are changing the treatment paradigm in advanced disease.
