Medical cannabis is now legal in many regions of the United States. This option is appealing for patients with various medical issues, especially those who need to manage pain or other chronic conditions. In contrast with many other formally scheduled substances, medical cannabis has not been associated with serious adverse effects or overdose deaths. The pressing need for acceptable treatments in patients with serious illnesses such as cancer is fueling interest in medical cannabis. However, evidence and safety data are still lacking for medical cannabis treatment in many diseases, and medical cannabis users differ from recreational users in several important ways.
