Pull Request Motivation

resolves: #8354

This PR copies the patterns of the cert-manager/aws-privateca-issuer to allow deploying arbitrary sidecar containers within the main cert-manager operator pod.

This allows use of the aws_signing_helper to use AWS IAM Roles Anywhere for DNS validation of domain ownership even if the certificates themselves are not coming from AWS.

Kind

/kind feature

Release Note

Added 'extraContainers' helm chart value, allowing the deployment of arbitrary sidecar containers within the cert-manager operator pod. This can be used to support, for e.g., AWS IAM Roles Anywhere for Route53 DNS01 verification.

Hi @dancmeyers. Thanks for your PR.

I'm waiting for a cert-manager member to verify that this patch is reasonable to test. If it is, they should reply with /ok-to-test on its own line. Until that is done, I will not automatically test new commits in this PR, but the usual testing commands by org members will still work. Regular contributors should join the org to skip this step.

Once the patch is verified, the new status will be reflected by the ok-to-test label.

I understand the commands that are listed here.

Appreciate the whitespace catches, but mostly the detailed example in values.yaml / template file.

By default it's unobtrusive and enables the use case mentioned. Also consistent with the aws chart (ref).

My only concern is that it might open it up to being too flexible and allow anything to run alongside. However given cert-manager is a cluster wide operator, you'd have to not trust your platform engineers for that to be a big concern.

Thank you @dancmeyers, I was looking into this feature to run cert-manager on-premises using AWS IAM Roles Anywhere. I tested this and it is working perfectly 💯
