So How Diverse is DC's new line?

I was curious, with DC claiming their new line would be modern and diverse, just how diverse their releases have been so far, so I broke them down.

Note: Certain characters (like Deadman) I listed as white, as he was white before he died. Same with Swamp thing and Frankenstein. Feel free to argue with me on them. And I have Batman in Parenthesis because he's in like 80 different covers. So I've been following the reboot/relaunch whatever thing of DC's, but it became hard for me to keep track of all the titles they were coming up with. For my ease and for everyone else, here is the complete list of the announced DC titles with their covers, writers, artists, and blurbs. UPDATE: Added the Supernatural characters, or whatever DC labeled this group. With this latest wave, it leaves 6 slots. I think it can safely be assumed these last 6 slots are for Superman and his crew. So basically the above list of missing characters will not be seeing their own titles (at least at launch). Awesome. Added Blue Beetle and Suicide Squad.

My thoughts on the DC reboot/relaunch/rewhatever

So my immediate reaction was "wow, this is going to bite them in the ass" followed quickly by "DC never learns, do they?" But now that I've had a few days to mull it over and read the releases and such since, I think I've settled on a reaction. I feel jipped. I haven't been into DC as long as I have Marvel (not that I've been into either very long), but I've been reading a lot of current and older issues and developed a lot of feelings for certain characters. A lot of these characters have been released in the last five years, and they seem to be the characters DC is going to dump as soon as they hit the redo button. This seems to be especially true for the batfamily. Cass had already been cast aside by the DC writers for years before FINALLY being brought back... Almost to inevitably be tossed aside once again, as they give roles to the old favorites. Same will go for Damian, and Steph, who are finally finding their stride in their respective titles. The Secret Six isn't one of the most popular titles DC has, and although it has a strong fanbase, it's not that large. That and DC doesn't seem to be fond of anything other than happy or self-deprecating superheroes, they'll probably get dumped too. DC has always hated Jason Todd, and since they brought him back they have had no idea what to do with him, so he will inevitably get tossed again too. No official word on Jaime, but as DC keeps claiming to be "diversifying," he should be all right. Same with Gavril who appears to be on the new JLI team. God knows what they'll do to Booster.

Basically, it makes me wonder why I've invested in these characters at all, since they plan on redoing everything anyway. Why should I bother picking up any issues until September?

And why announce the JLI at the end of Generation Lost at all if it's all part of their bold new reboot/launch/whatthefuckever?

Judas--A small rant

So I've watched Lady Gaga's new Judas video twice now and I have to say, I'm mildly insulted by it. I'm not up in arms in a rage about it, but I do find it completely disrespectful to the Christian church. Before I go any farther in this rant I will say three things: I am happily agnostic, was raised Roman Catholic, and do not agree with many of the church's teachings. That being said, I have Christian friends who are religious, and I respect both them and their beliefs (for the most part). I am also a fan of Lady Gaga, though she has been getting on my nerves lately for being a little too full of herself. Now that full disclosure is over, onto the point:

Prior to the video I didn't find fault with it. The word Judas has come into the English vernacular to mean someone's weakness ("you're my Judas"), and using Jesus' name in the way she did works into the song as a metaphor. That being said, you can listen to the lyrics without having to take it as some sort of religious statement. Although I wasn't the biggest fan of the song itself, I didn't understand the controversy that surrounded it as being anti-christian.

Then I saw the video.

The religious connotations (to me) as so beyond blatant. The bikers have the names of the apostles on their backs for crying out loud. Their leader has a bedazzled crown of thorns. Then there was the matter of that overdrawn baptism or what have you water scene. Without the religious symbolism I feel like the music video would have worked just as well (though I'm sure there will be people who will disagree with me, but this is my opinion). My problem with it is this--why is it whenever someone basically parodies or twists the beliefs of the Christian and Catholic church, it's considered edgey or cool, but if it were any other religion there would be protest from all sides? If the music video had been designed around Islamic or Jewish tradition, this would be a more wide-spread uproar. Oh sure, there will be some news publicity about it and how it's anti-Christian and what have you, and FOX News is already having a field day, but it will die down by the end of the week (though FOX News may keep talking about it for months because it's FOX News and they really don't have enough to talk about). But was the video about any other religion (technically western religion, as the west seems to not believe the eastern religions are real religions), the outcry would be much, much louder and less socially acceptable.

So why don't we hold Christian teachings to the same level of respect that we do other religions? Yes, some of the Christian zealots are crazy, but theyr'e just that--zealots. There are zealots of every group, regardless of age, gender, creed, religion, or sexual orientation. We can't allow our hatred or annoyance of them to influence our feelings on the religion as a whole. If it's because we as agnostics or atheists don't agree with their teachings that's fine. We're all entitled to our opinion, and we're certainly entitled to not agree with them. But who gives us permission to mock, lampoon, or parody it? Christians value the teachings, even if we believe it's nothing more than fairy tales or modern myths. It's our job to respect their decision to practice their religion just as it is theirs to respect ours.

TL;DR - Respect other people's religions, even if you don't believe in it yourself. It means something to other people, and its not your job to take it away from just because you think it's a load of shit (just as it's not their job to take your choice not to believe from you).

Okamiden/Pokemon

So I got Okamiden pretty much the day it came out, and 25 hours of game play later... I officially beat it. OMG that game <333. It was like an overdose of cute. The character designs were adorable, the art was gorgeous, and the storyline was fantastic. I'll admit, I was skeptical in the beginning as the game was riddled with spelling errors, and then later on as the plot started to go in what seemed like a completely different direction, but it managed to completely tie itself together in the end to make a very enjoyable story. And Kurow T_T. I'll admit it, I cried. I kept hoping Waka would show up at the end and heal him, even though Waka technically hadn't been born when he died... I completely felt more for him than I did for Kuni, because at that point Kuni had been out of my life for so long it was hard to reconnect with him. But then again that tease at the end for more Kuni/Chibi team ups did warm my heart. Also, nothing can convince me otherwise that Kuni didn't take on the name Kurow after Susano "disowned" him, especially once I saw he was carrying around Kurow's moon mirror thing. My biggest complaint with the game was the spelling errors, as well as the fact that the brush strokes didn't always work correctly, even though I know I was doing them right.

And now that I've finished with that, I've moved onto Pokemon White. Holy crap this game is Pokemon for grown ups, isn't it? Everything just seems more mature for a Pokemon game, and the whole "liberation" theme is also aimed more for my generation than the hoardes of kiddies I sold the game to. I'm also beginning to think I need a PhD to figure out how the hell the C Gear works, because just looking at it makes my brain explode. Bianca and Cleven or whatever are kind of annoying, but I like the idea of having friends instead of rivals, kind of like in Ruby/Sapphire with that blonde kid. And then there's the "you can only catch Gen V Pokemon until after you beat the Elite Four." I really like this idea. I know that a lot of people seem not to, but so far the Pokemon I've seen are beyond adorable (I decided to go into this blind without looking at the Pokemon in advance) and it means that I never have to see another Geodude in my life for a long, long time.

Gavril Ivanovich Picspam (Part Three)

After a lull in awesome Gavril moments... Justice League: Generation Lost 21 came out. And so I bring you these awesome moments in picspam form.

Okay, since we last left the picspam, Max Lord decided to allow history to repeat itself, and shot yet another Blue Beetle in the head. JLGL picks up right after that, with the other members trying to cope with that (and everything else) that's happened. Gavril chooses to work on his suit while Fire watches.

You have no idea how ridiculously happy this page made me.

Booster emos some more over Jaime's body, saying how he's not good enough, and that he shouldn't be in charge, because he's the perpetual fuck-up. The group chooses to meet up at that moment, and Gavril loses it.

Basically, I've been very caught up in playing at hellpointe (which is easily my fav LJRP ever, not that Ive been in many) and between that and work I have no time for anything else.

HOWEVER I will try to be more active, and I love you all.

Gavril Ivanovich Picspam (Part Two)

So last night I did part one of my Gavril picspam, which basically covered his origins and introduction to the group. Now I move on to the second and final part, where Gavril gets his chance to shine.

So the gang continues their hunt for Max Lord. Skeets traced the signal Max sent out to Checkmate, and so they leave Fire, former member of Checkmate, to formulate a plan to break in. She all but admits that it's crazy and suicidal.

Captain Atom is not pleased. He seems to have a dislike for Gavril, but I can't tell if it's because he's a Russian commie or if he's an idiot. Probably the commie part, because he should be used to hanging around idiots (see = Booster Gold).

So they all invade Checkmate... wearing Rocket Red uniforms to hide their identities.

Fire and Ice bicker a bit.

There aren't a lot of Gavril in those last two pages, but I just find Fire and Ice's Gavril impressions hilarious.

Gavril gets bored of fighting, and realizes that the room they need to be in is below them.

They go to look in the computers... Only to find themselves surrounded by half of Checkmate.

Ice secretly ices the floor and they try to get the hell out of there.

Fire gets so distraught over Gavril getting hurt like that, she accidentally breaks cover. This causes Jaime and Ice to also break cover, and they fight Checkmate. Somehow, Booster keeps a level head (how the hell did that happen?) and has Captain Atom get them the hell out of there.

They go to the abandoned JLI Embassy in Germany, where Captain Atom admits a grudging respect for Gavril. Meanwhile, the man in question is in the sick bay with... you guessed it, Fire.

Fire leaves, tells Booster that she respects Gavril, and accidentally stumbled upon Max Lord, who is also in the embassy, trying to get information off their computers. He uses his mind control to bind her to a chair. And back in the sick bay, Gavril was getting restless.

He doesn't stop talking because he hangs around Booster all the time. But the reason he stopped talking was because he found Max on the computer. He was about to reveal this when Max tries to fry him.

Notice how Gavril is constantly switching which hand Skeets is in, to make sure that he's protected at all times. It's a robot and he's treating it with the same care he would any of his human teammates (after all, all are equal under Marx). Not many people would do that.

Captain Atom takes on the out of control Fire and Booster takes off after Max. Meanwhile, Gavril suits up and gets Ice out of there, telling her to trust Captain Atom. You know, the guy that hated him two days before. The guy that Gavril has no idea has a grudging respect for him.

After that, there aren't a lot of good Gavril moments. He then sort of got reduced to awesome one-liners while various other teammates got the spotlight. Which is fine by him; he just likes to be a part of the team.

He's also witnessed a girl fight between Fire and Ice (no good pictures of this), bonded with Jaime over "who the fuck is Wonder Woman?"...

...Botched the English language some more...

...And got himself in a fight with a werewolf.

And this ends the Gavril Ivanovich picspam.

Gavril Ivanovich Picspam (Part One)

I recently got my Gavril into hellpointe , and as a result I decided to go back and picspam Gavril's appearance in Justice League: Generation Lost. He's quickly becoming my favorite character in DC (under Damian) and he's just too adorable to not share with the world.

For the uninformed: Justice League: Generation Lost is a 25 issue mini-series (as of today there are 19 issues out), following various members of the old Justice League International (plus two new legacy characters to take the places of members who died). It begins with Maxwell Lord, former financer and technical founder of the Justice League International, came back to life. Which sounds like a good thing, only in the years leading up to his death, Max snapped and tried to kill the entire metahuman population. After murdering Ted Kord (the second Blue Beetle) in cold blood and causing a reign of terror with both his mind control abilities (yes, the man who wants to kill the metahumans is himself a metahuman) and his metahuman-hunting cyborgs, the OMACs, Wonder Woman snapped his neck and killed him. In order to accomplish some as of yet unknown goal, Max uses his abilities to make the entire world forget who he is. Everyone, except for Fire, Ice, Captain Atom, and Booster Gold. Through "mysterious" circumstances they meet both Jaime Reyes (the new Blue Beetle), and Gavril Ivanovich (the new Rocket Red) and their team is complete (well they get Power Girl later on but shhh).

Okay so the team gets teleported from Jaime's house in Texas to bumblefuck, Russia, where they encounter several members of the Rocket Red Brigade (Russia's superhuman police force). At first they believe the Rocket Reds are there for them, but in actuality they're there for...

They fill Jaime in on what the Rocket Red Brigade is.

Yes, Gavril is out of his mind and has his own commie blog. He was awesome from page 2 (or whatever page that was).

Anyway, the team decides that this fight isn't any of their business, and are about to go on their merry little way when the Rocket Reds (that aren't Gavril) begin putting civilians in danger because they're attacking Gavril so carelessly. After someone almost gets hurt, they decide they have to help.

First sign Gavril is smarter than he seems.

You know it's bad when Booster Gold calls you showy.

Second sign Gavril's smarter than he seems--he's the first to piece together that someone has put the JLI back together.

See? He's totally harmless. He only attacks buildings!

And then Booster activates his true power--which is screaming at the top of his lungs and summoning Max Lord from thin air. Well, not thin air, but from a little hologram inside one of the defeated Rocket Red's suits. Max tells them that he put the team back together because the world needs the JLI.

Look at how polite he is!

Anyway, they get finished talking. Meanwhile, Skeets was trying to trace Max's signal.

What I find incredibly honorable about Gavril is that even though five seconds earlier he called this guy a "whore of decadence," and even while the guy is all but cursing his name, Gavril still cares about him. Truly cares. You can tell that he has a bond with his former teammate, and when push comes to shove he's not about to put petty politics in the middle. People always come first with him.

I'm going to save you from several gut-wrenching panels where Vadim thinks that Captain Atom will save him, because really it makes me want to cry every time I read it. The guy (and Captain Atom) explodes.

I wouldn't be surprised if Gavril was crying under that helmet. Manly tears for a fallen comrade. They take Jaime and Gavril to one of the old JLI embassies (I'm guessing the Russian one but I don't think they ever specify), and him and Fire talk one-on-one:

So Gavril shows his true colors--he's an idiot with a hero complex.

And that ends part one. Part two will be him being a complete and utter BAMF on his first real mission.

Day 17 - Favorite antagonist.

This one is a bit of an odd choice for me. I didn’t particularly like Justice for All as a whole, and I really didn’t like this case the first play through. However, the more I thought about it, the more Matt stuck out in my head.

When you first start playing the game, he’s this foolish airhead who seemed to get in waaaay over his head. And then all of a sudden he does this:

And he becomes a cognac drinking supervillain. It completely blindsided me when I was playing.

But not only that, Engarde was a damn good villain. He manipulated the evidence, manipulated the people around him, and if it wasn’t for Edgey having a sudden change of heart about what a prosecutor should do, he would have gotten away with it. Thankfully, good won out in the end, and Phoenix lost his only case.

Day 18 - Favorite protagonist

I think this one’s fairly obvious. Ezio is one of the most dynamic character I’ve come across in a while, and I fell for him instantly. What’s even more to love is that you don’t just spend one little story with him, no, you get to watch him live his life.

Watch him mature from young playboy to middle-aged leader of the assassin’s brotherhood. You see him make mistakes and learn from them.

You see him love. You see him mourn.

You see him make alliances and friends.

And most importantly—you see him get the revenge he so desperately seeks.

It’s incredibly satisfying to go through a journey, and even more to see him grow up. It’s almost like being a parent without any of the annoying parts.

This might be cheating, but I’m going with the Marvel Universe. Though, if I did live there, I’d make sure to live in like Iowa, as nothing bad ever happens to the Midwest.

Day 30 - Your favorite game of all time.

I'm fairly certain I've never played a game more than 5 times. Although I love video games, I'm really not likely to replay them. It's just who I am.

I have, however, played two games more than once, and they are:

I'm kind of sort of playing through it now (for canon review), and although playing it again reminds me the cases are all right, it has my absolute favorite cast of characters ever and I'm sure I'll play through it at least once more.

The other was another Nintendo DS game, Hotel Dusk. I almost did this one for best gameplay before deciding to go with LittleBigPlanet. I'm a sucker for a good mystery, and not only does this have a detective story right out of the 50s, it also has a good cast of characters and a lot of little things to do. It's also a text-based, which is a big turn on for me.

It's also played by holding the DS sideways, and the screen can be customized if you're left-handed. It really gives it a feel that you're reading a book, rather than playing a game. And I can really get behind that.

I mean really, could it have been anything else? To the uninformed, Phoenix Wright is a series of text-based RPG's on the DS. You play eponymous character Phoenix Wright, Defense Attorney, through a series of increasingly ridiculous cases, with seemingly everything (and everyone) against you.

These are easily four (technically five) of the best games I have ever played. The controls are simple and take you seconds to learn. If you don't mind putting up with a lot of reading, you're rewarded with an original, hysterical story that will stay with you long after you've put the game down.

And it's not just the story that will captivate you--it's the characters. Phoenix Wright has a long list of colorful characters from crazed murderers to spunky sidekicks and everything in between. The Prosecutors are bloodthirsty, the police (well, just one policeman) is incompetent, and the Defense Attorneys (and assistants) have far too much access to crime scenes.

Although I love the entire series, my favorite is Apollo Justice. Set 7 years after the conclusion of Trials and Tribulations, Phoenix hands over the protagonist reigns to young up and comer Apollo Justice. Maya is replaced with my personal favorite character, Trucy, the Prosecutor becomes Rock Star Klavier Gavin, and incompetent policeman Gumshoe is now enthusiastic Forensic Scientist (well, Detective) Ema Skye. I just prefer the character dynamics of the characters over the original cast.

A testament to it's success, the Phoenix Wright games are some of the most difficult games to find in the market. This includes the latest release, Ace Attorney Investigations. Although (sadly) Apollo Justice 2 is nowhere in sight, there is still a lot of life left in the Phoenix Wright series--Ace Attorney Investigations 2 is on the way, as is the epic Professor Layton/Phoenix Wright crossover game. If you haven't picked this game up, do it now.

Day 11 - Gaming system of choice

I tried choosing between the two, but I decided to go with a tie:

My first instinct was to go with the PS3. It's my console of choice, and is awesome because it can play original Playstation and PS3 games, and can play both Blu-Ray and DVDs. It also has Netflix. I love the idea of being able to see what my friends are playing, and the game selection is pretty good. It's where I can play Little Big Planet and Assassins Creed.

Then I looked at my DS. It's been with me the longest out of all the "next gen" systems, and although most people seem to find it useless I'm quite fond of it. The games are fantastic if you dig through all the crap. Some of my favorite games are DS games: Phoenix Wright, Professor Layton, Hotel Dusk, The World Ends With You... I love the fact I can take it anywhere and can play wherever I want, on my terms.
