Another tutorial~we will be going from this very red image to a more bluish, desaturated coloring.

It's not a surprise when I choose the adorable YeSung to serve as our model ♥ bias~

Our first step is to lighten it up a bit, the lighting looks so dull.
Make a new CURVES layer and give it these settings:
RGB
first: 58, 115 second: 178, 226

Here, I just wanted to bring back the intensity of the hair color and the reds in general because it looked too washed out.
Make a new CURVES layer and give it the following settings:
RGB
first: 96, 102 second: 123, 131
Set this layer to SOFT LIGHT.

This looks icky, but here I added a little bit of pink by making a new layer and a pink color, like #f59eb2 and filling this layer with it.
Set this layer to SOFT LIGHT 50%.

This next step darkens our image just a tad, while adding a bluish tint.
Make a new layer and fill it with a light gray-blue, like #d6daeb. Set this layer to COLOR BURN.

This will get rid of the ugly yellows and overpowering reds.
Duplicate the previous layer and set it to LINEAR BURN 50%.

Adding a brown exclusion layer will decrease some of the contrast.
Make a new layer and fill it with #483221. Set this layer to EXCLUSION 50%.

Our image looked washed out, so duplicate your base and set it to SOFT LIGHT to bring some of the colors back.

This will lighten our image, it looked to dark in our previous step.
Make a new CURVES layer and give it the following setting:
RGB:
first: 103, 124

This will make the colors pop a bit more as well as desaturate some reds. Make a new SELECTIVE COLOR layer and give it the folling settings:
reds: 26, 36, 0, 0
yellows: -32, -20, -30, 41
whites: 0, 0, 0, -44

This will add violet tones to our image, making our image more pink.
Make a new PHOTO FILTER layer and choose the violet filter. Set the density to 14%.

Our image looked -okay-, but I wanted it to have a more natural look.
Make a new CURVES layer to make our colors warmer/darker.
RGB:
first: 73, 52 second: 190, 146 third (bottomleft): 0, 50

This will lighten our image :"D cuz it looked -icky- dark.
Make a new BRIGHTNESS/CONTRAST layer and give it the following:
brightness: 25
contrast: 0

It looked washed out, so duplicate your base and set it to SOFT LIGHT 50%. Then, go to IMAGE> DESATURATE so the color won't look too overpowering, thus giving us our desaturated color effect.

This will darken the reds a bit (like his hair, for example) because the colors still looked washed out. Make a new LEVELS layer and give it the following settings so that your INPUT levels are as follows:
RGB:
15, 1.00, 255

The last step is entirely optional, I just think that in very pink-toned images, a red exclusion layer provides a nice finishing aqua-ish tint. This is a very minor use, I just made a new layer and filled it with #482121 and set it to EXCLUSION 10%.

If you want, you can flatten your image and sharpen it, too. (Here I sharpened once, then went to EDIT>FADE SHARPEN and decreased the amount to 30%.)

ONE; We start with our base, Kim Hyun Joong from SS501. :D

TWO; Let's make our colors softer. Make a new CURVES layer and give it the following settings:
RGB
first point: 90, 112
second point (pre-set point on the topright): 255,243

THREE; I don't like the pale yellow color of his skin right now so I made a new layer and filled it with a bright pink, like #fd8fab. Set this layer to SOFT LIGHT 50% to give his skin some pink tones.

FOUR; Our picture looked a bit too light. Make a new SELECTIVE COLOR layer and give it the following:
REDS
-20, 32, 23, 0
YELLOWS
42, 34, 35, 0
WHITES
-100, -53, -22, 59

FIVE; This step will add a bit of a yellow tint to your image. Make a new layer and fill it with a dark blue, like #202c49. Set it to EXCLUSION 50%.

SIX; I'm not quite fond of the faded yellow effect, so let's get rid of it while still keeping the yellows by duplicating your base and setting it to SOFT LIGHT.

SEVEN; This will lower the contrast in the image. Make a new layer and fill it with a dark brown, #493620. Set it to EXCLUSION 18%.

EIGHT; This gives it a bit of a cyan-green tint, which goes good with our pink/red colors.
Make another new layer and fill it with dark red, #492020. Set it to EXCLUSION 12%.

NINE; Now to make our colors pop again. Duplicate your base again and set it to SOFT LIGHT 50%.

TEN; This will darken the skin color and give it a redder color. Make a new GRADIENT MAP layer. Then go to PASTELS, and apply the soft yellow going to purple gradient. Make sure it's going from yellow to purple and not from purple to yellow.
Set this layer to COLOR BURN 40%, FILL 40%.

ELEVEN; One of my favorite features is the PHOTO FILTER option~^^
This will give it a pink/violet tint. Make a new PHOTO FILTER layer and pick the VIOLET filter. Set the density to 19%.

TWELVE; This desaturates our image just a bit. Duplicate your base and set it to SOFT LIGHT 50%, FILL 50%, then go to IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS and click on DESATURATE.

THIRTEEN; For this step, copy+paste the texture into your icon:

Set it to COLOR BURN 100%.

FOURTEEN; Our image looked really icky just now, so a way to fix this is by softening those overpowering yellows. Make a new CURVES layer and give it the following settings:
RGB
first point (pre-set point on the bottomleft): 0, 33
second point: 106, 123
third point (pre-set point on topright): 255, 240
Now that looks better :D

FIFTEEN; This will just add a nice soft effect. for this I took a soft round 100px brush, opacity 13%, and the color white and make a new layer, brushing it over the right side of Hyun Joong, and a little at the bottom left as well. :D

GASP!ARTIFICIAL COLORING?!! SO NOT PRO!!
stfu, artificial coloring is just as pretty as natural coloring. SO LET'S EMBRACE THE PINK. ♥
It's a long tutorial D:

NOMNOM YESUNG. HOW I LOVE YOU SO.

Because the darkness of the pic is icky, let's duplicate our base and set it to SCREEN 100% and ICK. it looks even worse.

To fix the ickyness a bit I made a new CURVES layer and gave it the following settings:
RGB
first point: 109, 124
upper-right point: 255, 229

Now to give it some pink hues, let's make a new normal layer and fill it with #eda6a6 and set it to SOFT LIGHT 100%.

Let's add in even more color to our picture. Make a new SELECTIVE COLOR layer and give it the following:
REDS: -20,22,13,27
YELLOWS: -45,21,23,10
WHITES: -100,-60,-29,30

Now to add some greenish hues :D red exclusion layers are nice for pink-ish icons. Make a new layer and fill it with #441e1e. Set this layer to EXCLUSION 50%.

This will decrease the intensity of the colors a bit. Make a new layer and fill it with a dark brown, like #44361e. Set it to EXCLUSION 20%.

Because the faded look just wasn't too pretty D: Duplicate your base and set it to SOFT LIGHT 100%.

It looks a tad too yellow, so let's bring back some pink and red. Make a new COLOR BALANCE layer and give it these settings:
MIDTONES: 14,-17,-5
SHADOWS: -29,-17,15
HIGHLIGHTS: 15,12,12

This will make the highlights a light pink. Make a new layer and fill it with a pale red/pink, like #e4bebe. Set this layer to DARKEN 15%. Darken makes the WHITE parts of an image this color.

8D more pink stuff~~
Make a new layer and fill it with #eda7a7. Set this layer to LIGHTEN 21%.

This will add a little more contrast to the image. Duplicate your base and set it to SOFT LIGHT 50%.

To tone it down a bit: make a new layer and fill it with dark brown again-you can use the same one you used before, but I used #44351e simply because I didn't know the other one. Set this layer to EXCLUSION 20%.

This step is optional, I just decided to make the dark parts a dark purple. Make a new layer and fill it with #3b2b47. Set this to LIGHTEN 30%. Lighten is the opposite of darken, it makes the dark parts this color.

Now for some special effects to spice it up a little~
I grabbed my previous pink (#eda7a7)and made a new layer and took a soft (airbrush?), round 98px brush, opacity 63% and brushed a long the left side of Yesung.
I set this layer to LIGHTEN 50%.

I just decided to make it ~shiny~ and duplicated the previous layer and set it to SCREEN 12%.

Here, I took this texture and went to image>adjustments>invert, and copy+pasted it to my image. I set it to SCREEN and moved it a bit to the left.

Another optional step: making it a little washed out.
To do this, take an almost pitch-black color like #080808 and fill a new layer with it. Set it to EXCLUSION 50%. And bam, you're done D:!

EXAMPLES USING SIMILAR SETTINGS

hand me a cookie for this one because this is the first time i'm gonna share something for 4 years..lol

we are going to make this:

a 100x100 animated icon with a white background

Hello there! Bare with me this is a long tut because i'm gonna go by details. This is basic animation tutorial for icons 100x100 with 40kb in size or lesser.

Use a software to capture the scenes or things you wanna make an icon with. Google if you don't have one. The lesser the caps the more chance it'll have a lesser size. I use PS7 (can be used in CS2, i guess) and IR (Imageready) this is because I can control the frames and caps.

Let's start.

1. Open Imageready. File > Import > Folders as frames.. (choose the folder that contains your caps)

2. Once your caps are opened in the frames, transfer to PS to edit. File > Jump to > Adobe Photoshop 7. Or just click the last icon in the tool box.

3. Once you're in PS, crop your subject. Notice the width and height above i put 100 on each to make sure i cropped an equivalent size of 100x100.

4. Resize your subject to 70x70. Image > Image size.. Make sure that it's on PIXEL.

5. This is a bit tricky for those who are just starting. We are going to make a white background for the icon.
To do this, we have to make sure the pic is centralized. Click Image > Canvas image.
Width 100 Pixels
Height 100 Pixels
NOT INCHES

6. After, check everything and you will have something like this.

7. Create a 100x100 icon with white background. Something like this.

8. Copy the 100x100 white icon. Put it at the bottom of the subject making it the background.

9. Now you have a background! From step 1 to 8, you should have something like this.

10. It's time for animations. Click File > Jump to > Adobe Imageready. Or once again, just simply click the lower icon of your tool box.

11. To animate your icon, click the small arrow at the right side of your animation window. click Select all Frames..

1. That is your animation window.
2. That is the small arrow you will click to see a list of menu.
3. Click SELECT ALL FRAMES.

12. Your frames are all highlighted. Click one of the frame in the "0 sec" area to choose time rate. Choose 0.2 seconds.

13. Now you can press the play button and watch your animated icon do the magic.

8D BLENDING TO -PLAIN- BACKGROUND.

This tutorial does not teach you coloring, just the technique of blending it into the bg, I guess.
What should I tag this if it's not about coloring, mihaa?

Start off with your base 8D this was originally TAN!YeSung but...that wouldn't work out too well so I gave it a black and white gradient map layer.

My tutorials should be predictable already. Duplicate base, set to SCREEN 100%.

Duplicate base again, set it to MULTIPLY 70%.

It looks a little more...flat?IDK. But the blacks are darkened and the whites are toned down. Make a new CURVES layer and give it the following settings:
point 1:76, 46
point 2: 152, 156
topright point: 255, 235

New CURVES layer to make the blacks more gray 8D
bottomleft point: 0, 53
1st point: 115, 105
2ns point: 197, 194

Erasing some of the image so that it blends well in the end. I didn't -really- erase it, I took the eyedropper tool and clicked on the background color, made a new layer, then used that color and a big soft brush with low opacity (62 is good) to color some of YeSung's face off.

I wanted to get rid of some of the highlights, so I made everything more gray by making a new, normal layer and filling it with a dark gray, like #d5d5d5. Set this layer to DARKEN. Darken makes the white parts this color.

Texture time 8D

Take this texture and set it to MULTIPLY 100%.

Some more grayness to add since the texture itself is a purplish-gray. Make a new layer and fill it with a very light gray, like #ebebeb. Set this layer to MULTIPLY 70%.

Now to lighten it 8D
Make a new CURVES layer and give it the following settings:
1st point: 87, 108
2nd point: 128, 165
~And that's it, you're done!

Some more examples:

These are plain ones with just blending into the background. Like in this tutorial, you can always add textures depending on your image~~

Pink Coloring

Especially made for mihaa_elf X3 one of the few colorings I used in my recent batch at haenbokcookie. enjoy!

Our pic is too dull. Let's start off by shedding some light by duplicating your base and setting it to SCREEN 100%. Sharpen this layer if you wish.

Make a new CURVES layer and give it the following settings:
1ST POINT: 80, 35 2ND POINT: 158,94
Your third point will be the little point in the corner in the topright area of the graph. Drag this down so that your input and output numbers are 255 and 241.
Not only will this bring back some color, it will also fade the whites so that when we bring them back, they won't be too overpowering.

~~I really did this to make his lips stand out~~ XD let's make him a little more colorful and bring out highlights~
make a new SELECTIVE COLOR layer and give it the following settings:
reds: -39, 22, 7, 0
yellows: -17, 10, 10, 0
whites: 0, 0, 0, -59

This will make it a little less monochrome and add some green hues. Make a new SOLID COLOR layer with the color #462121 and set it to EXCLUSION 50%.

Now to bring back our reds and make it less washed out, duplicate your base and set it to SOFT LIGHT 100%. Make sure this is all the way at the top.

We start making it more pink by making a new GRADIENT MAP layer and applying the YELLOW/PINK/PURPLE gradient (I explain how to do this here, in step 7). Set this layer to SOFT LIGHT OPACITY 50%, FILL 50%.

I'm a sucker for light colors (I've said this before), so I made a new CURVES layer and pulled the bottomleft dot so that the input and output are 0 and 26.

Let's lose some of that washed out look. Make a new LEVELS layer and set the first top number to 10.

Now for our last touch, violet coloring~to get it, you make a new PHOTO FILTER layer and choose VIOLET from the filter list. Set the density to 10%.

Hello, everyone~~~
yes, I lied...I don't feel like making textures lately, BUT. I bring you guys another tutorial~♥

Our base: pretty, pretty YeSung. ♥

Start off by duplicating your base twice and setting both to SCREEN 100%. This will make our image lighter, cuz who likes a dull and dark icon anyways?~
Now, this may vary from image to image. If your image isn't too dark to begin with, I advise to not use two screen layers, or, just adjust opacities.

Because he looked washed out, I want to bring the intensity of the colors back in, so duplicate your base again, drag it to the top, and set it to SOFTLIGHT 100%.
So our reds are back~~

Let's start by making him less yellow and a little more peachy.
Make a new SELECTIVE COLOR layer and give it the following settings:
RED: -24, 17, 16, 0
YELLOW: 100, 47, -19, -18
WHITES: 0, 0, 0, -100 (be careful not to make your highlights too white-only use this if they're not obvious in the original pic.)

We don't want the peachyness to be -too- overpowering, so make a new layer and fill it with #4a390a, a dark brown. Set this layer to EXCLUSION 50%. (I know, I'm obsessed with brown exclusion layers, but they're awesome.)

YeSung looked kinda pale on our last step, didn't he? So you know what to do when it looks too washed out...duplicate your base, drag it to the top, and set it to SOFT LIGHT 50%.

It seems like we lost a bit of the peachyness there-not that it looks bad now, but I really like pink coloring~
so, make a new GRADIENT MAP layer.
This -might- be a little confusing so please try to follow me.
Once you make the Gradient Map layer, a window will appear, with a band showing your current gradient. Click on the little arrow beside that, and another little window appears under that. Click on the arror on THAT and a list will appear. Click where it says "pastels". Once that is done, you will have another pastel set to work with. Click on the first arrow we clicked on now, and choose the peach/pink going to purple gradient.
Click OK, and set this layer to SOFT LIGHT opacity 40%, fill 40%.

I really like soft colors-this step is optional...but if you wanna try it out, go ahead.
Here, let's make a new CURVES layer.
See the little dot way at the bottomleft of the graph? Pull it up some until your input is 0, and your output is 15. This will fade things a little.

Of course, we don't want an entirely faded icon either, so let's make a new LEVELS layer and set the number on the first box at the top to 10. This will bring back the intensity of the shadows while keeping the icon with a soft color.

Another optional step I do for icons, I think it makes it look pretty.
Here I took a soft 100px brush, with its opacity to 61%, made a new layer, and brushed at the bottomleft side of the icon with the color white.
Then I set the layer to SCREEN 25%.

Our base~YeSung singing passionately as always. I love this man ;A;

You guys should know by now that I'm a screen layer freak-and this image is ick and dull so let's start by lightening it 8D.
Duplicate your base two times. Set the one above your base to SCREEN 100%, and the one above that SCREEN 68%. You may choose to sharpen this layer.

At this point you should know that I'm also a curves layer freak-so make a new CURVES layer and give it the following settings:
INPUT: 87 OUTPUT: 23

YeSung is looking a little too yellow so let's change that a bit. Make a new SELECTIVE COLOR layer and give it the following settings:
REDS: -18, 29, 9, 0
YELLOWS: -29, -29, -50, 0
WHITES: 0, 0, 0, -50

Now we bring out some more mangenta/blue-ish hues by making a new layer and filling it with a very light blue, like #e3ebfb. Set this layer to to COLOR BURN 100%.

This will soften our image as well as give it green-ish highlights and soft reds. Make a new normal layer and fill it with a dark red, like #481f1f and set it to EXCLUSION 80%.

I do this to make it lighter and less contrasted, so make a new BRIGHTNESS/CONTRAST layer and give it the following:
Brightness: 10
Contrast: -10

Now, duplicate your base and set it to SOFT LIGHT 100%.

Our image looked nice, but I wish to change the highlights just a little. Make a new PHOTO FILTER layer, and choose the cooling filter (LBB).
Set the density to 10%. This will add a bluish tint to your image.

Now to balance it out so it won't look TOO blue, we make another PHOTO FILTER layer, this time picking the Green filter. I set the density to 24% by accident?rofl. You don't have to. Anywho, once you've done that, lower the layer's opacity to 20% so it won't look too green.
And there you have it 8"D hope you like~~~

2. take this lovely texture made by blue_emotion and set it to overlay 100%

3. take this texture made by me, set it to multiply 100% and duplicate this layer once.

4. take this texture made by me, set it to color burn 30% ~~(not much effect though)~~

5. layer > new adjustment layer > selective color
reds: -25, +40, +25, 0
magentas: -48, +22, +25, -17
whites: +40, +18, +38, -30
neutrals: -25, +10, +31, -17

6. layer > new adjustment layer > curves
RGB:

YeSung Tutorial 2;

Because I always love making tutorials for you guys, this time, I bring a very simple black and white coloring tutorial. ♥

We first start off with our base: a high-quality image of our favorite, adorable dork, YeSung 8D
Of course, high-quality images are always preferred for the BEST results.

To make our image grayscale, go to image>adjustments>gradient map. Click on the little arrow on the bar you see with the gradient and it should give you a few more other gradient options. Choose the one that's going from black to white and click OK.

I know this looks icky, but it helps with balancing out our next step ^^
Duplicate your base and set it to SCREEN 100%.

Now to make this skintone toasty~or warmer. Duplicate your base again and drag it to the top of the screen layer. Set this to MULTIPLY 50%.
Sharpen this layer once 8D brings out details more I think.

This is where it looks a little more metallic?The whites become brighter, and the blacks darker. Duplicate your base one last time and set it to SOFT LIGHT 50%. Drag it all the way to the top.

So now we're gonna make our skintone even more toasty. Make a new LEVELS layer and give it the following settings:
INPUT: 12, 0.71, 242
OUTPUT: 21, 255

This step is entirely optional, but if you want to make it just a tad less contrasted, make a new layer and fill it with the color white (#FFFFFF).
Set this layer to SOFT LIGHT 15%.

And there you go~!*w* Hopefully this method will work with other icons, I know it's worked with various other images I've tried. Hope this helps~

Changmin Tutorial.

A simple tutorial for you guys, featuring DBSK's one and only Changmin ^^

Our base is Changy X3
Start off by duplicating your base and setting it to SCREEN 70%. Sharpen this layer. (filter-sharpen-sharpen) I do this so the effect the curves layer has on it won't be overpowering.
Next I make a new CURVES layer to make the colors pop. I give it the following settings:
Input 1: 88 Output 1: 24
Input 2: 134 Output 2: 62
Now, make a new SELECTIVE COLOR layer. I do it to make it more blue :P
The settings:
REDS: -21,21,21,0
YELLOWS: 100, -50, -40,0
WHITES: 93, 0,0,-26

This next step is optional, but if you wish to do it, make a new COLOR BALANCE layer and give it the following settings:
MIDTONES: 10,-10,0
SHADOWS: -10, 2, -10
HIGHLIGHTS: -5, 0,-5

Then I decide I want to add in a bit more blue/magenta to it, so I make a new, normal layer and take a light, grey-blue, like #e5e7f3, and fill the layer with it. Set this layer to COLOR BURN 100%.

Our image looked a bit contrasted so, make a new BRIGHTNESS/CONTRAST layer and give it the following settings:
BRIGHTNESS: 8
CONTRAST: -15

And you're done!
ALTERNATIVE COLORING:
If you want something more washed out, one of my favorite things to use is brown exclusion layers. To get this outcome:
1. Make a new layer and fill it with the color #473a1f. Set this layer to EXCLUSION 100%. Move this layer UNDER your light blue COLOR BURN layer.
2. Set the BRIGHTNESS/CONTRAST layer we made so that the brightness is at +15.
3. Duplicate your base and set it to SOFT LIGHT 70% and drag it all the way to the top, and you should get this:
