★ Postal System

The postal system was established by the twins on request from a player character. Anything physical - a letter or a present - that a character would like to send can be sent through the mail to another player character. On the Plane, there is a post box sitting innocently around. Characters can drop the mail they wish to send here, and it will end up in the post box (or whatever their reality's equivalent is) in the character's reality. All you need to do is write the name of the person you intend on sending it to, combined with thinking of the person you want to send it to (to account for deviances.) The magic of the Plane knows no bounds!

For this, you'll need to set up a mailbox post on your character's journal. All this needs to be is a post with the note that this is the character's mailbox. When you've done that, you should comment here with which character the box belongs to and a link to it, and we'll add it to the mail index here.

Because of one of the character's paranoia, malicious items cannot be sent through the mailing system. Sorry, guys. These items will instead be returned to the sender.

★ Network

As we all know, it is near impossible to survive without some sort of communication device. Fortunately, mobile phones, wireless computers, blackberries and the like are all functional within the Machine. The most important thing is that you can only call someone whose number you know. The machine is very clever; if you dial the right number, you'll get to the right person.

However, phone reception is split. While you are on the Plane, you will only be able to contact devices that are also on the Plane. While you are off the Plane, you will only be able to devices that are also off the Plane. In the second case, it doesn't matter what universe the person you're contacting is in; you can still reach them.

Several characters have voice mail posts up, where you can leave a message and from there do a phone thread. Other players have played out phone conversations in the logs community. Some do it over the course of a thread in a main community. What you choose to do is up to you!

One of the best ways to avoid confusion and questions is to ask ahead of time. These sections are to facilitate that.

★ IC & OOC Permission Memes

So let's say you really want your character to punch another character. But the mun isn't around to ask. Sadness. Except maybe they filled out this handy dandy Permission Meme. It details various sorts of things that might happen and gives permission (or denies permission) for said events to take place.

Some definitions for those not in the know:

Threadhopping is when two characters are in a comment thread and a third character interrupts.
Backtagging is tagging on a post or a comment several days after that comment was received.

There is also the bonus First Impressions meme. This one outlines the sort of first impressions your character may give to other characters.

Just paste these into your character's journal and fill them out. It'll help muns a lot. If you're unsure how to fill them out, you can ask, or you can try looking around in the journals of characters already in the game to see how they filled it out.

★ Player Permissions

Some characters, like godmoders, telepaths, and psychopaths, have personal permission memes set up by the player to help them interact. In aid of this, we've set up this index here of permission memes that players have created. When your character is accepted to the game, please fill out the permissions that are here.

★ The Fourth Wall

Naturally, with how screwed up and twisted realities are going to get, in a way, breaking the fourth wall and questioning the reality of a world isn't a problem. And there are of course characters who canonically break the fourth wall (like Disgaea) or maybe have knowledge of other canons (think Konata of Lucky Star) or perhaps just flat out know too much about their world (Star Ocean 3, anyone?) so fourth wall breaking has a chance of happening. We ask that you be mature about it and don't run around shattering characters for the hell of it.

When a canon your character wants to refer to is not represented in a game, feel free to refer to that canon as something fictional. If your character wants to refer to a canon that is represented in the game, you must get permission from the players. For this, we advise using the contact post and the permissions meme posts that players put up.

★ Activity

Because activity is what makes an RP go 'round. We're very lax with activity, but there are a few important points to cover about activity checks, taking a hiatus, and dropping.

★ Activity Checks

About every two months, we make a post (generally in rainbow colours) announcing an activity check. If you want to keep a character, you tag in with the name and journal of the character. That's it! Just the name and journal of the characters you want to keep. A week from then, we will list the journals not included in the activity check. Players will have a week to respond to that post if they still want to keep those characters in the game. Journals which have not responded or commented to the hiatus post will be removed from the game at the end of that week, but they are free to reapply at any time.

★ Hiatus

Need to take a hiatus? We totally understand. Just let us know for about how long you expect to be gone and what characters it will be affecting.

While you are on hiatus, you can decide what is happening with your characters. If you have characters sharing a universe with yours, you may want to work out that they're busy and haven't had time to get involved in things. You may decide to have their presence implied after working out what exactly they would be up to with other players. Another option is enabled because of the inconsistent time differences between the Plane and realities: it is possible that a character will spend only a day at home while weeks pass on the Plane. They might not have the chance to notice they are missing anything.

To go on hiatus, please comment to this post by filling out the following form:

★ Drops

Characters that are dropped will be considered lost. If someone happens to ask one of the hosts about them, the host may say that the character 'changed their point of view.' From the inconsistent nature of the Plane, it can take quite a bit of time for characters to realize that their friends have gone.

If a character is picked up again, the character is generally played from a clean slate despite the previous stay. However, if the same player picks up the character again, they may choose to have the character remember in flashes. They may also choose to have the character keep all of their memories of the Plane, with the character not realising that they 'left' at all. Just as with hiatuses, it is possible for a character would go to bed one day and wake up to find that twelve hours for them was twelve months for the rest of the characters.

Areas of mergers from dropped characters will remain, but as the connection between characters fades, the merger may fade away too. Be sure to comment to the merger post to say when a connection has faded and a merger vanished.

★ Realities

Whatever crazy place you come from, call that your reality. A character's reality is their entire universe. This is the place they return to from the Plane. Each character comes here with their own reality, alone in it. Each world is separate. As relationships change and develop and grow, worlds come together.

★ The World

Though realities are real, functioning universes, they are still shaped and formed by the minds of the characters. These realities are fully populated by characters of that world not applied for by any player: Non-Player Characters, or NPCs. NPCs are handled by the players of that reality and can be shared in mergers. These NPCs are real people, though no one has yet made it clear if they're the people your characters know and love from their own universe or if they're creations of the Machine, just as no one has clarified if the realities are natural universes or ones generated by the Machine. And then there is the philosophical question of whether that even matters. We'll leave that particular quandary to the characters.

★ World-Hopping

If a characters grabs another on the Plane and tries to drag that character back to their reality with them, it will work. The character in question will appear out of nowhere in the first character's reality, which could be awkward if a lot of NPCs are about. The Plane's translator will help them get by. If they go back to the Plane, things will be as before, and they'll return to their own world when they try to leave the Plane. They'll need the first character to yank them back through again.

★ Random Encounters

People from different realities can also visit each other in their home realities via semi-random encounters. The Machine occasionally moves people from one reality to another and back again. These sudden trips can last for seconds or, theoretically, forever, though it is very rare for something like that to happen.

★ Differing Canon Points

If characters are of the same series and deviance, they will be inserted into the correct reality by the Machine immediately on their arrival. This is technically a complete merger, which means that it may cause problems for characters of the same canon and deviance who are not from the same canon point. In this case, players are asked to discuss what they would like to do with their castmates. They can have a merger that mixes bits of each point in time, drag one character forward or backward in time to meet up with the other character(s) without experiencing what their canonically would have, or remain separate in their realities. What changes you may make to a reality to make up for time differences can be explained when you apply for the merger. If you like, you can take your time before having a full merger of canonmates in order to sort things out with the other players.

★ Deviances

Given that the Machine has access to the all universes, it also has access to all variations on all universes; that is, it has access to each deviation of a universe's history. The idea is this: the many-worlds interpretation of quantum physics is even more correct than it realises. For every world, there are an infinite number of reiterations and rearranged realities, and in the interest of fairness, the Machine takes people from them all.

★ Deviance 1

Every canon has the events which happened, onscreen or on the page or what have you, and are thus undeniable. These events form the canon, base reality: deviance 1. Different characters from different realities may have different opinions on things that happened off-stage (eg, what a character's True Name is, if this has never been revealed) but this will be hand-waved away with different perceptions of realities. Those differences aren't deviances, but slight changes in perception that are best worked out between players.

★ Deviance 2+

An actual deviance is a dramatic departure from canon. This can take many forms. It could be a change in setting, taking something originally set in 1093 France and moving it to 1903 Spain, with appropriate changes. It could be a different type of setting-change: a story that is originally a medical drama could be translated into a detective story. That is one type of canon change.

Another type of canon change keeps the setting the same, but will change the events dramatically. If it is a play and a murder occurs in Act III, you could change the murder to happen in Act I and observe accordingly. If a character dies at a certain point, you could rearrange events to let them live and accordingly work with the changes that would follow after.

A third type of canon change keeps general events and the setting, but will dramatically alter something else important. Events may change slightly, but not in the same way that actually changing the events themselves works. For example, you may chose to have your hero become less of a bright, shining hero and more of a malicious, manipulative cunning old dog of an anti-hero or outright villain. Likewise, you could consider role-reversals: what if instead of the usual hero being the chosen one, a different person got that role? While the characters are changed in this scenario, the real trick is to keep them similar to their canonical counterparts while playing with the changes.

There are likely other ways to change canon to create a deviance, but these are the three main ones. They don't need to be epically dramatic but a change or difference must be recognized. Each deviance will be labelled with a number and if other characters from that deviance show up, they'll get the same number.

This is important in particular for reality mergers and disappearing characters. The framework is this: each series is its own set of universes and each deviance is its own reality within that set of universes. Each reality runs its own set of NPCs to suit the particular character and deviance.

★ The Astral Plane

Walking through the Astral Plane is like walking through the Hubble Deep Field in 3D: celestial objects above and beneath you, dizzying in their plenitude. As the Astral Plane is the one area that all characters have in common, it serves as a central meeting point.

★ General Description

The Astral Plane is a seemingly endless flat surface. The ground is hard and metallic; you cannot damage it in any way. There is a certain dampness to it and traction suffers accordingly. The ground is entirely clear, and it does not reflect light the way glass would, so it is like walking on hard and metal nothingness through space. There is no bend of a horizon and no way to tell ground from sky. The sky above and below look like the Hubble library of photos exploded and plastered themselves randomly. The stars are always moving; there's no point in trying to chart the celestial bodies because there is no pattern to them.

For those attuned to such things, there is a metallic smell and a metallic taste to the air. In the distance, there are the occasional sounds of grinding and turning, but other than that, it is silent. The temperature is generally cool but pleasant, at least to the average human. The conditions will support if not forever sustain life.

★ Movement

Movement to and from the Plane is done simply by doing it, the way one simply does walk. Many characters explain it by telling people to think of their home and then the Plane, and perhaps by trying to walk. This generally helps beginners, but the process can become much more natural as time goes on. Because this process is intuitive and natural, it also takes a bit of effort to perfect it. With time, people can learn to control where they appear on the Plane; by default, they appear in the same place as where they last left it, and generally within the busiest area of the Plane.

People don't really arrive of the Plane by accident or while sleeping, the way one does not walk on accident or while sleeping sleeping. (There are no sleep-Plane-walkers.) People can, however, arrive reflexively, the way you might reflexively punch someone when they're threatening you.

If a character is in physical contact with someone when you step off of the Plane, they may end up dragged back to their own separate realities. This pull can be resisted, in which case the character being dragged along will stay on the Plane. If a character is touching something and moves to the Plane with that thing, it will come with them. Generally, things are brought intentionally, like a desk with all of its paperwork. The various buildings seen on the Plane are from characters' realities. NPCs from a character's world cannot be brought to the Plane, however.

★ Magic and Science on the Plane

While characters are liable to encounter problems with their abilities and technology during reality mergers, the Plane supports all magic and technology. Characters have self-contained reality bubbles on the Plane, which is a psuedo-scientific way to say that powers and abilities from various universes will function for all characters according to the rules of their universes, unless these powers have been deliberately hampered by the Machine. Items also have their bubbles. Televisions, stereos, and electric objects have self-contained electromagnetic bubbles to power them.

If the powers of certain universes (such as a magic that requires no natural ability, merely the ability to learn) are taught to people of other worlds, they will be able to function on the Plane for that person. They are far less likely to function in realities.

★ Objects and Buildings

There are many things littered on the Plane. Apparently, the residents never learned how to clean up after themselves. While the relative location of these items are as inconsistent as those of the stars, they generally tend to stay in one area, and characters can usually find their way around. Some of the larger objects and items found on the Plane are listed here.

Information Kiosk: To help newcomers get their bearings, there is a small kiosk with "INFORMATION" written at the top, containing informational brochures

Coliseum: The coliseum is in the style of the Flavian Amphitheatre, though it is not identical to it. It is in near-perfect condition and has previously hosted battles, duels, and death matches before. There are some traces of damage to the structure, and dried blood lingers in patches on the ground.

The Astral Bar: The Astral Bar is a Western-style building with a large chunk missing from its east wall and a somewhat damaged roof, though the bullet holes in it were repaired after it was destroyed on the Plane for the first time. The bar has tables, chairs, and of course the bar itself stocked with drinks from across the multiverse. The Astral Bar always restocks itself, though an empty space in the bar will never be filled with a new bottle when someone is looking there.

The Astral Kitchen: The Astral Kitchen is a very nice model, with a giant restaurant sized oven, a restaurant sized fridge, a normal sized stove, many cabinets, a very old but still functional microwave, and, of course, a kitchen sink. The kitchen stocks itself the same way the bar does, offering foods, drinks, and cooking utensils from all over the multiverse.

The Beach: Once a tropical beach, all the palm trees have now been cut down and all the water has dried up. Still remaining is the expanse of white sand that fades into a grassy area before the tree line.

The Forest: The beautiful forest, which contains a stream and glowing flowers, originally was home to flora and fauna from Japan. Now it grows plant life from various realities.

The Theatre: The theatre is a 1930s style building, with a great sloppy banner hung across the front that says "ADMISSION PRICE: FOOD" in blue paint. With glass doors, red furnishings, and wood panelling, it seems like it is only fit to play old reels. Certainly, it can do that, but over time it has developed so that any audiovisual recordings can be played on the theatre screen.

The Ballroom: Two-stories tall, the ballroom like this. It's led into by this entrance room through the hallway you can see at the back of this pictures. From the entrance and hallway are several closet-sized rooms filled with various period costumes and one room has a table shoved in it which has Venetian styled masks. Additionally, there are several dressing-rooms. As with the bar's drinks and the kitchen's food, the clothing and masks will replace themselves if removed. However, the item that replaces them (as in the bar and the kitchen) won't necessarily be the same item as you originally removed.

The Onsen: Coming with free snow-covered hills, the onsen is described in full here. Given that corpses were found in the now-unlocked thirteenth floor (the corpses have been removed) and that people were originally trapped in the resort, some residents treat it with suspicion.

The Mansion: With unlocked doors, the mansion is a potential home away from home. It is laid out by room in this post. Everything is present but the guest house.

The Library: Stolen from the President of Gotham University, the four-floor library is organized by the Dewey Decimal System, except there are no helpful signs telling you where to find what. As with the dresses in the ballroom and the supplies on the bar and kitchen, the books here will be replaced with similar books if they're not given back. The library originally contained books primarily from the DCU, but it has quickly begun to fill up with texts from all over the multiverse.

The Mail Box: The mailbox is small and inconspicuous compared to the buildings. Its use is explained further here

Assorted: Other items on the Plane include but are not limited too, a seesaw and swing set, batting cages, a bus stop from Tokyo, paperwork, strings, harps, a hat stand, and a very comfortable chair.

★ The Black Hole

There is a very peculiar small black hole on the Plane. It simple sits there in the air, some space above the ground. Scientific measurement will tell you it's a black hole, complete with event horizon and singularity; physical experimentation will tell you otherwise. Drop an object in it and it won't come back, sure, but putting a hand in it will just make one's hand very, very, very cold, and the hole is growing colder over time. The hole releases cool breezes from it that move around the Plane. There is an invisible metal block near the hole which can only be detected by touch; it's ten feet tall and three feet wide. There is a bright and obnoxious sign next to it. The sign reads, "Please do not drop things or each other into the hole. Thank you!" In smaller writing, it also says, "We will let you know when we figure out what it is."

Due to recent activity on the Plane, the black hole has gotten larger, large enough that someone could easily fall in. The area around it is distorted, like a heat wave on the road in summer. For about ten feet around the black hole, the gravity has changed so it is impossible to walk through it. You can't get near it to fall in even if you wanted to. Outside of the gravity field is one shiny, metallic pillar. The metal block is inside the gravity field. If you strike the metal pillar, it rings out as a humming middle C.

Your arrival may go a little something like this:

It all starts with a nightmare. Definitely not a normal nightmare, either. It's the worst nightmare of your life. When you wake, you can only remember it through hazy confusion, recalling just shadows of horror and stabs of fear.

But the nightmare ends and the day goes on like normal, except . . . except for that shop. You've been in this place a thousand times before and that shop was never there. And it won't open up unless you're alone.

Curiosity gets the better of you and you go in. Inside the shop is a man whose smile almost seems to split his face in two, exposing rows upon rows of bright, white teeth. He steps towards you, and you stumble backwards, hitting your head. You wake up in what appears to be outer space. Not dark, cold nothingness but the nebulae and galaxies and stars. Standing in space is a cloaked woman, calm as can be, offering to answer your questions.

Where am I? What is this? Who are you? All very good questions to ask. The answers you receive?

In a voice far more calm than befits the situation, she replies that you are where you are, that this is the Astral Plane, that she is Meredith Sault, though that is not her name. Further questions earn only the curving of her lips and the words, "Welcome to the Machine."

And that's it. You open your eyes again and you're standing outside the shop, everything back to normal. Or at least at first glance things seem normal. But now that you think about it, that outer space place felt more real than home does. Then, a thought drifts through your head. Nothing clear, nothing coherent. It's a curl of a compulsion wrapping around your mind, and you find yourself drawn back inside that shop.

You think you're in control of the situation. You just don't know: You're already trapped. You step inside that shop and find yourself back on that astral plane.

From there, what happens is up to you. It is at this point that the first person sample of the application begins, when that character steps back onto the Plane for the first time.

★ The Hosts

The people who maintain the Machine and this experiment are all mod characters. Some are helpful, some are misguided, some are cruel, and some are dancing to a higher power's tune. While they can change and may appear with varying frequency, there are some constant influences.

★ The Shop

The shop is a quaint wooden cottage that happens to be perhaps a bit futuristic on the inside. It's run by a man named Grey and the double jokers on the gaudy sign make it hard to miss. He's all too happy to sell characters the things they need - even information - for the right price. Can they afford his prices? That depends on what they have to lose. On the plus side, his employer wants him to hire new employees. As long as those employees don't try to get into the back room, behind the purple curtain... Oh, and don't even try to attack him. The door has a trigger to detect harmful intent, and you really don't want it to go off.

Though NPCs can see the shop, whenever they try the door, it is locked. They may, if they are lucky, catch a fleeting image of the twins in the window, but they won't be allowed in. Regardless of what they try to use - magic, technology, or explosions - they will not be able to get into the shop. The door will open only when player characters are alone (or alone with other player characters).

★ Main Hosts

Meredith ☆ Meredith Sault represents what she simply refers to as 'the Order.' It has a real name, but she doesn't think that you need to hear it. There's something distinctly eerie in her mannerisms, from the distant voice to the fluidity of her movements. Her robes hide her eyes in shadow, but her lips, often curled in amusement, are always visible.

Meredith is not your friend, but she is not your enemy, either. She will not be bought, coerced, convinced, or made to care, for she values little and considers everything to be transient. She will not attempt to trick you, but she often speaks vaguely - or else callously offers shattering information, a small smile the only hint at her reason for doing so.

Raymond ☆ Raymond Keys works for a man named Jed, and that's all he has to offer on that situation. He looks stunningly average, brown hair, brown eyes, average height, dressed in greys and like he can't decide between business or casual. His stature and appearance always seem like he's just barely tolerating being there.

And when he says you make him sick, he means it. He comes from a long line of people with the ability to sense the inhuman, but no one has ever had it as strong as him. He has no problems treating you with utter contempt and disgust, but will at least play at being nice to get his job done.

Grey ☆ Grey, as he calls himself, works for the same man Ray does. He is the new owner of the shop, and can be found there at almost any hour of the day or night, frantically writing away in a notebook (always with a green cover). He seems normal enough, though sometimes, when he smiles, it's like he has too many teeth...

Derogative ☆ Derogative is an insufferably cheery, usually asleep, new addition. When dealing with most humanoid beings, he tends to take on a human form; a man in his early forties with short, messy brown hair, bright green eyes, and usually dressed in jeans and a black leather jacket. Though when in the shop, he tends to prefer his natural form: a giant canine-like animal with a golden ankh on his chest.

Most of the time he does odd jobs for whoever needs him for anything, he takes his role as Guardian seriously, but it would be best for everyone if he just remains as doofy and scatterbrained as he allows himself to seem.

The Twins ☆ The Twins are comprised of a girl and a boy - Lapis and Lazuli respectively - who look shockingly young and like perfect, pale porcelain dolls. Everything about them is sheet white and neat, wearing old-fashioned clothes, cropped hair and generally seeming quite delicate if not rather unsettling.

Don't be fooled. The Twins are sly, amoral business types. Everything has a price and nothing is sacred. They appear to have ties to everything corrupt - the mafia, crooked cops, etc - as well as everything good - heroes, orphanages, whatever - and keep their cards close. People tend to end up in debt to them but if you have what they want, they might just be your best friends.

Also, they have a creepy tendency to talk in unison, as if they share a mind. The only way to tell them apart is Lapis's slightly higher voice and the fact that they each wear a braid but on different sides of their heads. (Lapis wears hers on the right, Lazuli's on the left). If you listen closely when they move, the sound of gears can be heard. CURRENTLY MISSING.

Roe ☆ Not much is known about this woman. She fixed the Machine after it crashed from misuse, then disappeared. She seems to be irritable, because she very much is. Recently she has appeared again in glee at character suffering and annoyance that they were getting a vacation. She's a bundle of joy.

★ Contact A Host

In this post, you can ICly contact a mod character. You should leave a comment of whatever your character is doing to get attention - going into the shop and so on - as you would with normal tagging. If you have a preference for what character you get, give their name in the subject line. For the purposes of this post, the characters that can be contacted at any point are Meredith and Derogative.

However, if you do not specify which character you want, you may receive messages from others involved in the workings of the Machine.

★ Death

Death happens on the Astral Plane. In fact, from the hints given by some of the hosts, it may even be integral to the Machine's functioning. Though death is not permanent, there are consequences, and mod permission is needed before it can happen.

★ General Consequences

Characters who die will disappear for a period of time (at least a day, but more time is allowed) and wake up in a drugged haze on a lab table. Ray will be nearby, but not too close. He doesn't like being close to people. And he'll kick you right out without giving you tea. If you are lucky, you may be able to pick out a cup of coffee on your way out of the shop. Characters who have been revived will find their blood now nearly black with shimmers of what looks like gold dust or, perhaps more appropriately, like stardust.

If a character does not share their reality with anyone, their reality will stay time-locked while they are gone, just as it is when they are on the Plane. If they do share a reality with someone, time will go on without them until they come back.

★ Particular Consequences

Depending on the number of deaths, the consequences change. The changes are set out below.

★ 1st & 2nd Deaths: For the first and second deaths a character experiences, they go through two changes. Their abilities may change, either increased or decreased in power. They may have new abilities or have lost something. For example, a character may be a normal human being prior to dying, and after waking up, they may be a normal human being with an allergy to bees. Alternately, someone with mild telepathic abilities may find their abilities amplified.

The second change is one of reality. Because death is a traumatic event, it should be traumatic enough to cause reality to change back home. Possibly, they'll get bits of their childhood home to comfort them through the experience. Possibly, there will be bits of a horrible part of their life where they had to go through hell.

★ 3rd Death: The third time a character dies, they will go through the same changes experienced in their first and second deaths, with the addition of a large suppression of some of their memories. This can be a memory of a particular time, a certain person, or an incident. Whatever it is, it is a loss of a part of the self - either from the trauma of death or because the Machine has taken away a little piece of who that character is. The memories can be recovered, but to recover pieces of them would require strong triggers, and to recover them fully would be even more difficult.

★ 4th Death & Onwards: Those who die four or more times will experience a reality change and memory loss. They will also gain an ability as dictated by the moderators. This change will be based on who they are, but like all deaths, it draws them that much more into the Machine.

★ Form

If a character is dying, you comment here with this information:

The number of deaths is inclusive. If the death you are requesting is their second time dying in the Machine, put down the number two. A reminder that you don't need to fill out the reality change in the reality change post as well. As long as it's here, we're good!

As you may notice, there’s several communities that make up Reality Shifted.

★ Main Communities (realityshifted)

Here is where you post 'journal' entries i.e., for this RP, all IC posts will be posted directly to the comm and not to character journals. These are in actuality forays onto the astral plane. Comments are people chatting it up on the astral plane. This means they aren't quite like journal entries. More like first person meeting grounds, as if you ran into your friends on the street (except that the street happens to be the Astral Plane). People can bite, kick, touch, snog, smell, etc on this plane – and oddly enough, things that occur on this plane are more intensely received by the senses than in the realities. In other words, they feel more real. Check out the main community and see how players do it to get a feel for it.

If you're wondering why some people number their posts, the answer is simple: size contest. No, really. It's there to see who has the most posts.

★ Tags
Posts here are tagged by series, deviance, and character. The formant looks like this "series name (d#) character name" would be one such tag. A mod will add a tag to your character's post when they see it. You may wish to make a post in your character's actual journal with which to organise posts and comments as you would desire.

★ Logs Community (shifted_logs)

This community is for logs. That's prose, essentially. These are scenes which are to take place between apped characters, not between an apped character and other characters created in their reality (see: prompts comm below for more).

It can come in two forms: a thread, where the rping is done over comments, or in a log, where RPing is done through instant messaging, and then edited into a prose form. Logs should be set up like this:

Log Title on the subject line- Any sort of title you want can go here

To briefly explain each! The Title can be anything of your choosing. The Characters and Location should be obvious. Just tell who's in the log and where it's happening. The Time can be pretty vague. Generally it's meant for "after so and so's entry" or something. Since reality is constantly influx, so is time, so don't sweat over specifics. The Warnings should list any questionable content (like Not Work Safe stuff).

As far as the prose style, it's all 3rd person. However, we won't kill you if your logs aren't Shakespeare or epic huge. Just as long as they show a good grasp of the language and you have fun with them, that's all that matters. Please, feel free to make use of this comm. Logs are a blast ♥

★ Prompts Community (shifted_prompts)

This is a writing comm! It's for fic, essentially, as we all like to write our characters (I should hope). These are for drabbles and scene. The pieces may be introspective and may or may not be RP-verse canon, if you like. They don't have to take place within the course of your character's stay inside the machine, and may be from before their arrival here. This is, essentially, to enrich the universe which your character is bringing to the table.

NPCs of the reality are of course allowed in here. Applied characters are also permitted for use, but you should talk to the appropriate player about it for approval. If you use an NPC in it and that NPC is later apped, it's not a problem. The only time you have to ask is if a character is there, in-game, applied.

However, this is not a community for logs. The difference between logs and prompts is that logs are collaborative writing pieces between one or more player, while prompts are written by one player, with their character as the focus. Of course we're not going to come at you with a hammer if you post something that might do better as a prompt in the log community.

Fics should be posted to the comm, so we can all see. You can of course post them elsewhere, but just give us a link to it from the community.

When posting, we ask that you use the following format:

★ OOC Comm (shifted_ooc)

For OOC things! Introductions, notes for hiatuses (though you still need to drop a line at the hiatus post for the mods or it shan't count), memes, silly stuff, miscellaneous stuff. Pretty much if it doesn't go in the other comms, it goes here.

There is a tag *player plots for this comm. This tag can be used if players want to suggest a plot or wish to make plans with other players for assorted plots.

★ Chatroom & Wiki

Why yes! We have both! The chatroom is easily accessible for anyone on AIM. The usual room name is 'realityisrelative' because we're incredibly clever like that. It's open mainly to members already in the game but feel free to invite interested friends and the like. If the chat happens to be empty, also feel free to fish for members. Invites aren't usually a bad thing ♥ It's just a chat to enjoy each other, spazz and talk.

The wiki, meanwhile, is also just for fun! The new wiki is here. (We have an older wiki here.) It contains useful things about the characters, the muns and is mostly just silly things about them. It also contains write-ups of plots, reality mergers and anything else we think of. It's a group effort, so all players should feel free to contribute how they like.

★ Reality Changes

Realities begin entirely normal and separate, but that need not remain. As the minds of people change, and as the Machine has time to restructure itself, this can change.

★ Mergers

The primary type of change is called a Reality Merger. A merger happens between two (or more) characters and will occur because of a type of 'bond' between the characters – love, hate, camaraderie from working together, and so on. Characters connected to each other may merge realities based off of this connection.

If you recall, each series is its own set of universes and each deviance is its own reality in that set of universes. As a result, the easiest type of merger goes on between people of the same deviance from the same series; generally, this is automatic and enables canon to go on functioning. This is further explained in the reality section. However, mergers mostly occur between characters from different realities, whether different deviances in the same universe or from different sets of universes completely. This comes from the connections between characters, positive or negative.

★ Partial Merger

The partial merger is the most common. It involves part (hence the name) of two different realities coming together. Bits of reality become shared or transferred. This can exist in a lot of ways. It may be a particular building that is shared between people: all of the objects in this building and all of the people in it will exist in both realities. It could be that the building is half made of things from one reality, and half made of things from the other reality, or the building could be entirely from one of the realities. The important part is that it is completely shared. All of the NPCs in that building will be able to see both characters from both realities involved in the merger.

Changes are not restricted to buildings or places. Sometimes, it could be that certain objects – like streetlamps – will appear occasionally in one character's reality that isn't supposed to have them, while straw huts will appear in the other character's reality from the first person's reality. It could also be that certain government influences or technological advances start popping up across universes.

There is a great deal of liberty with partial mergers. The merger may exist only on every other Tuesday. It may exist permanently. It may exist only when characters really miss each other and want to be closer to each other or if they're in distress and need someone nearer to them. Partial mergers will work as a sort of patchwork system laid over a character's dominant reality.

As the NPCs are fully integrated into the Machine's network of universes, they may notice bizarre Plane-related events, including mergers. NPCs might find a reason to protest if a building suddenly pops up out of nowhere. On the other hand, subtler mergers – the sudden functionality of magic, incongruous technology, that sort of thing – are harder to notice, and may help NPCs make less of a fuss about unexpected buildings coming out of nowhere. More long-standing changes are more likely to be ignored than newer ones, and one oughtn't underestimate the power of SEP. Ultimately, how willing NPCs are in accepting the changes is up to you.

While some characters may see this as a perfectly good reason to avoid getting close to anyone on the Plane, they will find that the Machine has other plans. At player discretion, characters who decide to avoid or reverse mergers may experience sleeplessness, increased nightmares, or even phantoms of pain until they reverse their decision. They may also hear a voice telling them that these connections are needed.

★ Complete Merger

A complete merger is what it says it is. Everything, everywhere, will be shared between two or more characters. All NPCs will be shared, all land will be shared, and all of every NPC's memories of the past will be a combined memory of the past between the characters. Partial mergers from other connections and any other reality changes will also be shared in a complete merger. While it is definitely easier to do this in a shared deviance, it is possible for a complete merger to exist between any characters, given time and a strong connection.

★ Merger Conditions

Mergers rely on emotional connection, active will power, and time. The stronger the emotional connection is, the more the mergers will happen. Think of it this way: as the gaps between people are bridged, so too are the gaps between universes. For this reason, locations that are merged are often areas of emotional significance to the relationship between the characters.

Active will power also plays an influence. If characters are actively trying to bring their realities together, it will be a great deal easier for them. Characters who use science or magic to try to encourage mergers may find themselves more likely to experience a merger if simply because they believe they will be.

Both will power and emotions, however, rely on time. The more time passes, the more time the machine gets to recalibrate, and the more will power and emotion will be put in. As time goes on, mergers become more widely spread and easier.

Mergers will stay even if the character travels. That patch of land that connects you to your best friend on the Plane? It will follow you. Everywhere. It will not leave you alone. Additionally, if a character is dropped but had mergers with characters still in the game before they dropped, their mergers will remain for some time. The merged areas will fade away as the emotional connection with the character fades. And if realities are fully merged and one character is on the Plane while the other isn't, time will bend and flex to cover inconsistencies.

★ Other Changes

While mergers are the main type of reality change, they are not the only type of reality change. People who are mentally unstable, or who become unstable because of traumatic events, may slowly have their realities change to reflect that mental instability. For example, a section of their reality may be replaced by some part of their reality from their past memories – a piece of Turkey in the middle of New York, or time rewound back to someone's childhood in a small area. If your character dies, they may suddenly find that their house has been replaced by their childhood home, complete with a much younger family and that pet dog that died years ago. And no satellite television either, as it hadn't been invented yet.

This type of reality change can be worse than that. People from the past may come back to haunt them as living beings. A severely disturbed mind might actually be crazy enough to change the world so that it literally rains pie, because the person is just that crazy. While this sort of thing does take time, it is more than possible.

★ Reality Change Form

This is the place where you fill out all changes proposed to your reality so that mods can say "APPROVED" to it. This includes partial mergers (a section of X's reality ending up in Y's reality, and vice versa), complete mergers (X and Y share identical realities), and alterations to realities (a block in X's reality is replaced by a section of her childhood home). All you have to do is answer this:

Characters: This section asks which characters are involved in the merger. When you do mergers, please remember that anyone who shares a full merger with your character will also share partial mergers. So if your character is fully merged with a canonmate and becomes friends with a character from another canon, you must ask the player of the canonmate before requesting that merger, as it effects their character's reality, too.

Type of Change: This is simple! Is it a partial merger, a complete merger, or an alteration?

Description of Change: Here, you need to consider and describe what is being changed. For a partial merger, rather than saying, "Spain and Atlantis," you need to describe what is happening. Is Spain replacing Atlantis? Is Atlantis replacing Spain? Is half of Atlantis going to be in the middle of Spain? Will Spain suddenly be beside Atlantis? Who has the dominant edge in this merger? Saying, "At the centres of Spain, the palace of Atlantis will be enclosed in a water bubble that humans from Spain can enter by wearing scuba gear, while the people of Atlantis cannot exit into Spain and see the rest of the ocean as it normally is" is going to be enough.

If characters are from the same universe but different canon points, it is important to consider what this will do to the timelines. Is it 1910 or 1912? Whose canon point has the dominant edge? What is left behind from the other canon point?

Essentially, you should write out here what you plan on adding to your reality description.

Reasons for Change: This part is easy. We just want to make sure that you aren't moving too fast for the Machine. If characters have become best friends who are psychically bonded over the past two months, that's all we need to know. If characters just met yesterday and hardly think about each other, a merger is much less likely to occur.

Additionally, if you wish to drag character X into character Y's reality, you will need to comment here with the characters, what you intend on doing, and the reason for the change. Please remember that dragging one person into another person's reality requires a very strong relationship (for better or for worse), a great amount of time spent in the Machine, and very strong mental powers on the part of the person dragging the other person along.

★ Experiments

As you may have noticed, when things happen, it usually affects the entire experiment group. But sometimes, it’s just not viable to test every single subject. Sometimes it’s just better to nab some unsuspecting sap, tinker with them and promptly kick them out the door to see what happens. This is what individual experiments are for.

★ Scope

Experiments can affect a person or a reality and have a fairly broad range. Some possibilities are making someone mute, psychologically reverting someone to their childhood, replacing their world with a giant candy shop, or making it so that Brian Blessed is inexplicably narrating their lives. While Meredith and the Twins are limited in what they're doing, and while the Twins are trying to learn not to do terrible things to good people, other powers can get their hands on the Machine, and they may choose to subject participants to any variety of experiment.

However, some experiments are simply not possible. For that reason, we ask for all experiments to be approved before they are implemented.

★ Solvability

Some experiments can be solved. If, for example, a character suffers memory loss, this may have been induced by psychic means. As such, a character with psychic abilities may be able to go into the amnesiac character's head and solve the problem. Whether or not this is possible is left to player discretion.

If you want it to be possible for your experiment to be solved, please be sure to include how you want the experiment to be done (nanobots rewiring mind, a curse) and how you would like it to be done (Electromagnetic pulse, a neutralizing spell).

★ Form

If you wish to have an experiment done to your character, please fill out the following form.

Under the 'effects', we would like a description of what you would like to happen and any side-effects or permanent effects it may have. For example, if you want the reality altered into the character's nightmarescape, then will parts of the nightmare land still linger afterwards?

As for duration, we at least need the starting date you would like and a rough guess at how long it will last. Naturally, sometimes something sounds good in theory and ends up being better suited for a shorter span. Conversely, sometimes things need to be drawn out for longer than expected. We like to use these as rough ideas for helping us plan game-wide plots without interfering in too many individual experiments.

The world you're familiar with seems a little different, now. You can't remember your nightmares these days but you have them more often than ever before. And a strange world of darkness and starlight keeps drawing you in.

This isolation that people live in may be what first drew 'their' interest. Or perhaps they themselves are driven by a different sort of machine. But regardless, through means unknown, they have found a way to mix realities to their selection. To change the way the world itself works. It's a grand experiment or it's a fantastic game. But it's the new reality.

The world you're familiar with seems a little different, now. You can't remember your nightmares these days but you have them more often than ever before. And a strange world of darkness and starlight keeps drawing you in.

If you have looked over the game information and decided that you would like to join the game, then the next step is to fill out an application for the character you're interested in. This is a breakdown of what we are looking for in each section of the application.

★ Fandom Character Application

Player Name: Whatever you want to go by; real name or handle, whatever you feel most comfortable with.
Player LJ: Simple enough! Just tell us what your main LJ is.
Email and/or AIM: So we can contact you, and you us.
Timezone: This is useful for arranging roleplaying. If there's any contact info you don't want us to put on the contact info post, then just tell us.
Other Characters: Just list what other characters you play here, if any. This is as much for helping us organise as it is to check up on how active you are.

Character: Whatever name they most commonly go by. Aliases and real names, as well as nicknames, can be put here, but please put the most common name first.
Series: Tell us what fandom your character is from! Simple as that.
Deviance: Tell us if it follows the main canon of the show (deviance 1) or if it follows another deviance. If it follows another deviance, please tell us if this deviance is being played by anyone else in the RPG or not. Briefly note here what that big change that makes it deviant is.

Age: Here please put the character's age from the point you’re taking them from. If there isn't a specific age, give your best guess. Also, if their age varies from the age they appear (say, over 1,000 but looks 39) then note that.
Gender: Male, Female, Transexual, two spirited – whatever you think the character defines themselves as.
Species: Human? Homunculus? Borg? Tell us what species your character is.

Canon Used: This is where you tell us the canon you are primarily using and thus what you're familiar with. This is important for many reasons but is especially good for possible canonmates to avoid confusion over important and possibly differing events. It would also be helpful if you mention if your canon is drastically different from other forms of the same canon, such as in FMA, where manga and anime differ greatly.

If you happen to take your characters from a fandom that simply has one movie, say that the canon used is from the movie. Some canons, however, are not as simple, with contradicting sources or a variety of them, so this section lets you explain which sources you're choosing to use. It doesn't have to be particularly long, but you must keep in mind what potential canonmates will need to know when dealing with your character.

Appearance: Generally this: if someone looked at your character, what would they see? You may choose to link to a picture or write a description of the character.

Psychology: We want a run-down of the character's personality here. We would like this to be thorough, to show us you have a grasp on who the character truly is. Psychological strengths and weaknesses will go in here, along with general demeanour, any weird habits or nervous tics, psychoses, and whatever you can think and feel is relevant. Essentially, this is who your character is mentally and emotionally. This is one of the most important sections of the application, so please be thorough.

Other Skills/Abilities: This is the place where you get to talk about if they’re good at fighting, or if they have particular psychic/pisonic abilities. Can they fly? Can they teleport? Are they hypersensitive to the time-space continuum? Do they do magic with Tarot Cards? This is primarily to help other characters interact, so that psychics don’t accidentally read the minds of other psychics with powerful abilities, and so on and so forth. This does not include psychological strengths – if they’re compassionate and persistent, that goes into psychology.

Other Weaknesses: If your character is deadly allergic to aspirin, put it here. If they don't have any stamina to speak of, or if their punches are rather pathetic? Also put it here. Phobias and psychological weaknesses are for the psychology section.

History: Tell us what happened up until they ended up on the plane. We want to know what sort of sort of lives they've led, what the most important events in shaping their lives were. Tell us about those important people and events that made this person what they are today. If the canon is vague or contradictory then try to speculate, within reason, to fill in the blanks and tell us that you're speculating here. Deviant realities should be certain to specify where you take a turn from the canon. Remember: big differences in canon only. Different backstories and little details can be worked out between players or handwaved through the idea of reality perception and alternate universes.

If an outside source (a wiki, a fansite, etc) has a history written out for your character, you may choose to link to it, though we may ask for extra information if the source is too vague or confusing, like with characters who have problematic timelines. Linking out applies best for d1 fandom characters. If your character is a deviance fandom character, but follows that history up to a certain point, you can still link to an outside history, but you must tell us particularly where they deviate and how things change from that point.

Canon Point: State the point in time that your character is from in their canon. This is useful for fellow players to know where your character is coming from. This should be updated whenever a canon update is requested. It only has to be a line or so, such as "After Detective Comics #742," and if the character is deviant, try to give a rough approximation with explanation, if at all possible.

Reality Description: Describe what the character will be seeing when they get here. Tell us the setting, the physical reality they're living in. Is it 9th century Paris? Is it Manchester, 1973?

Most important in this section are the features particular to this world. Does time travel exist? What about mana? Does everyone suddenly turn into a turnip at midnight on foggy evenings? Are there any powerful organizations or groups that have an influence on the story or plot? The place for that is here. Important NPCs should also be mentioned here and briefly outlined.

This section is designed to help players out when discussing merging realities and the like, so information you think would be helpful for mergers should be here.

First Person Sample: The mechanics of the game can be a bit tricky, so we want to understand that you have a grasp on it. This has to be your character’s arrival post. For examples, look at the posts on realityshifted and see what other players have posted. Also, feel free to ask at the Q&A or inquire with the mods (or other players) if you don’t understand the mechanics.

There is a fair bit of flexibility with this section. We want ten lines (sentences) or more of your character actually speaking for this. However, if your character would not respond talkatively about the plane, you may write a secondary sample of your character speaking in whatever manner you like, as long there are ten solid lines of your character's voice. This is in addition to the quiet arrival post, but matters for giving a voice sample. If your character just happens to talk very little, explain that to us after writing their not-so-verbose arrival piece. We do realise that people like Minato exist.

To help you figure out what to write for the sample on the plane, it may be of use to note that there are a variety of objects on the plane, including but not limited to a bar that magically restocks itself, a colosseum, and a beach with all the trees cut down.

Third Person Writing Sample: Alas, my friends, but we are less lenient here. Give us 300 words or more of your character, doing something or other. Considering that this sort of role-playing is what you’ll be doing in logs and things, it’s very important to your application’s acceptance. Logs are the lifeblood of any roleplay, and good writing endears you to the moderators. You may also link to a log or prompt you have done with this character so long as you’ve written over 300 words in it.

Did you read the rules? While we highly doubt anyone will say 'no' to this, we do request that you read over all the information we've given. It will be rather helpful in gameplay.

This is almost identical to the application for fandom characters, though the mods may ask a few extra clarifying questions after you send your application in (as we don't have wikipedia as a reference). A couple sections work a bit differently, and some sections (like 'canon used') are removed entirely.

Series: For the sake of organization in taken lists and tags, we ask that you come up with a name for the series for us.
Deviance: This will automatically be 1.

Reality Description: As we are unfamiliar with your world, the more information here, the better.

★ Summarized Guide

To help introduce you into a game, this is a brief summary made by tsunderes outlining many of the major features of the game.

★ Basic Summary

Realityshifted is a panfandom and original character roleplaying game that allows for AU (called deviant or deviations) verions of characters. AUs are not required in any way. Deviances can be as small as changing a canon event to see how it effects the course of canon to putting a character from one canon into another. Characters can also end up with bits and pieces of elements from other canons as a part of establishing relationships with other characters in the game.

★ Setting

There are two settings in the game which characters can interact with. One is their canon world, which may or may not be an entire universe created on the spot for them. Space-travellers will be able to travel the universe, and vikings can stay within their village and never leave it. All other characters in the canon are present, unless one of those characters comes into the RP. See Mergers details on that.

The other setting is the Astral Plane, which is the primary source of interaction. It is a star filled void that appears to have no floor, and there's a bunch of junk scattered on it, like a coliseum, an eternally restocking bar for the resident alcoholics, and a giant mansion. Characters are able to come and go to the Plane by merely thinking of going/leaving, and no time passes in their reality while they're on the Plane.

★ Arrival

Shortly before the character actually arrives on the Plane, they notice a shop that has suddenly appeared in their reality. It draws them in, but the door will only unlock if they are alone. When they go in, they might meet three of the game's NPCs (see below) on the Astral Plane. After they talk to the NPC, they are outside the shop again. The character can react as they would to such a situation, but they will eventually feel compelled to go back inside again. This time, they are able to interact with all the other characters on the Plane as in intro post and the first person sample for the application. They may find the kiosk marked by the sign "INFORMATION" that contains informational brochures about the Astral Plane.

★ Hosts

The main Mod NPCs are the Meredith, Grey, Derogative, and formerly the Twins. Meredith and the Twins are often mentioned IC as the ones in charge of why the characters are able to come to the Astral Plane. Meredith is a woman who is constantly cloaked and often speaks in riddles. Grey is a man who seems more engrossed in writing than with working the shop. Derogative appears to be a gigantic sort of canine that often lounges about the shop, but sometimes can be found in human form. The Twins, now missing, are just what the name implies--twins. They are a boy and girl who are doll-like in appearance and talk in unison. They are sly and will fulfill characters' wishes for a price. The easiest way to get in contact with a mod character is through this post.

★ Mergers

When two characters either become close or really really hate each other, the realities of each character will start to come together. Character A may end up with Character B's post office instead of their own, and Character B might end up feeling corporate influences from Character A's world. What pieces each character gets is up to the players of each to decide.

If a character has canonmates that come into the game, they will be inserted into the correct reality by the machine immediately. This is technically a complete merger, which means that it may cause problems for characters of the same canon and deviance who are not from the same point in canon. In this case, you may want to discuss with your castmates if you should do a merger that mixes bits of each point in time, if one character will be dragged back or forward to the point in time of the other character(s), or if they'll remain separate in their realities.

For characters from different canons or deviances, full mergers take a while to get. Instead, they can get partial mergers that can build up to a full merger. This is what is described in the first section. Mergers are in no way required of any characters in game, but they can be a fun way of developing relationships and altering game play. For example, Horatio (Hamlet) could end up with caped superheroes in his world if he happened to get a partial merger with Booster Gold (DC)!

★ Rules

You have probably heard most of these before, but it is always good to set them out.

★ 1 Be kind and courteous to your fellow RPers. That’s common sense, right? No rude insults, slurs, bitching, etc. Be welcoming to all players. Also, this goes for respecting the characters. No character bashing. It's uncool.

★ 2 Stay IC. Another easy one, right? No worries, character development is great and awesome and encouraged but keep it within the character’s personality. It’s doubtful that someone dark, evil and heartless will suddenly be picking flowers for sickly orphans and crying at Lifetime channel movies.

★ 3 No godmoding. In other words, don’t control other people’s characters. If you have an idea for that character, then obviously get in contact with that mun and talk it over. But never do something with a character without that character’s mun’s permission. However, it’s okay if you and another player have a close bond where you trust each other with your characters. Just make sure that bond is there and you’re still keeping things IC.

★ 4 In connection to that, no coercing particular events. Suggesting plots and such is quite fine, but saying that "Z should do this" puts Z-mun on the spot and coerces them to do something they may not want to, or may not feel is natural for Z character. You just have to let things happened. (As my mother once said to me, "Whatever will be, will be.")

★ 5 Try to stay active. If you’re picking up a character, then we want to see them around. Feel free to take hiatuses as needed (RL happens and takes priority) and obviously characters won’t always have something to say but at least get them out commenting whenever you can. Otherwise what’s the point in having the character?

★ 6 This RP is heterosexual/homosexual/bisexual/'I reject your societal definitions of sexuality!' friendly. Explicit content should go under cuts and be flocked, though (remember, LJ is a whore about adult content. Ironically.)

★ 7 The character limit is currently at five characters and a player can only have three characters per fandom. The fandom limit can be discussed with a mod, however, depending on expansive canons and such. Also, if your five characters are active and you'd like to play another, chances are we'll allow it. We’re pretty flexible on this sort of thing ~~They’re more like guidelines really…~~ There is no limit on the number of OCs a player may have, but at this point, they must be non-fandom OCs. On that note, you can only play one version of a character. Meaning if you’re already playing Deviance 1 Haseo, you can’t play any other type of Haseo. So choose your character wisely.

★ 8 If you’re not sure on something – a rule, a plot you want to do, something about the setting – then please ask a mod. We don’t bite ~~unless you want us to~~ and communication between mods and players is important.

★ 9 Keep any IC drama IC and OOC drama out of the RP. Meaning that, naturally, characters will fight and bicker and backstab each other but don’t take it personally. Conversely, don’t use characters as an excuse to take out OOC frustrations on someone. If you’re having OOC drama issues, try to resolve them privately and maturely or if need be, contact a mod. This goes for the chat room, as well.

★ 10 The very most important one of all: Have fun! It’s a game; it’s supposed to be fun. So just relax and play.
