66)<\/strong> this morning around 5 am. Nobody was around and it was great to wander the mountaintop temple with nothing but the sound of birds singing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-616.jpeg\" alt=\"Path down from Unpen-ji\" class=\"wp-image-23532\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After gathering my belongings I set off down the mountain towards <strong>Daik\u014d-ji (\u5927\u8208\u5bfa &#8211; 67)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-615.jpeg\" alt=\"Rakan statues at Unpen-ji\" class=\"wp-image-23531\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The path took me past 500 grotesque <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arhat\">rakan<\/a> statues of people who have attained nirvana, somewhat appropriate since I was now entering Kawaga Prefecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-617.jpeg\" alt=\"Trail down from Unpen-ji\" class=\"wp-image-23533\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-618.jpeg\" alt=\"Onion plants\" class=\"wp-image-23534\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>More appealing were the flowers and fields of onion plants which I&#8217;d never seen before being harvested and are really rather beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-621.jpeg\" alt=\"Daik\u014d-ji gate\" class=\"wp-image-23537\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-619.jpeg\" alt=\"Bell rope at Daik\u014d-ji\" class=\"wp-image-23535\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-620.jpeg\" alt=\"Daik\u014d-ji temple\" class=\"wp-image-23536\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>10km later I climbed the steep stone steps up to Daik\u014d-ji where a large camphor tree is said to have been planted by K\u016bkai. The temple gives sweet <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manj%C5%AB\">manju<\/a> bread to all walking pilgrims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-622.jpeg\" alt=\"Roadside shrine\" class=\"wp-image-23538\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By now the sun was the hottest I&#8217;ve felt it during the whole trip so I put on some extra sunscreen. Unfortunately part of my sedge hat broke last week which means I haven&#8217;t been able to use it for protection and got a bit sunburnt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back on the road, I reached a crossing where a group of tiny children and their teachers were waiting. They all shouted &#8220;konnichiwa&#8221; in unison which was very cute and made me smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-624.jpeg\" alt=\"Kannon-ji\" class=\"wp-image-23540\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After another 9km, I reached <strong>Jinne-in (\u795e\u6075\u9662 &#8211; 68)<\/strong> and <strong>Kannon-ji (\u89b3\u97f3\u5bfa &#8211; 69)<\/strong> around 1 pm. They were placed together during the separation of Shintoism and Buddhism and share the same temple office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-623.jpeg\" alt=\"Three stone Buddha's at Jinne-in\" class=\"wp-image-23539\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In front of the temples was a small restaurant where I stopped for ice cream and enjoyed the air conditioning for a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-625.jpeg\" alt=\"Old houses near temples 68\/69\" class=\"wp-image-23541\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A nice row of old houses lined the lane leading to the main road but it wasn&#8217;t clear if they were inhabited anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-626.jpeg\" alt=\"Statue at Motoyama-ji\" class=\"wp-image-23542\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Continuing east 5km, <strong>Motoyama-ji (\u672c\u5c71\u5bfa &#8211; 70)<\/strong> was undergoing some major restoration on its enormous pagoda which was entirely under wraps unfortunately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-628.jpeg\" alt=\"Running child\" class=\"wp-image-23544\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since it was already 2.30 pm and I had another 12km to go I didn&#8217;t linger long and was soon back out in the scorching sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-627.jpeg\" alt=\"Takase henro hut (53)\" class=\"wp-image-23543\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Henro hut of the day has to go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geocities.jp\/henrogoya\/koyapage\/53\/53.html\">Takase<\/a> (53) which despite being right next to a busy road is really well maintained and by all the photos inside looks pretty popular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A little further on I stopped at a Lawson&#8217;s to offload my rubbish like a well-behaved hobo. While I was doing this a lady came out and handed me an ice-cold bottle of lemonade. She stopped just long enough to tell me that she once completed the pilgrimage herself before speeding off in her car.
