Parents and bystanders were enthusiastically cheering them on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-439.jpeg\" alt=\"Yokaichi Old Town\" class=\"wp-image-23283\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-440.jpeg\" alt=\"Yokaichi Old Town Door\" class=\"wp-image-23284\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-442.jpeg\" alt=\"Yokaichi Old Town\" class=\"wp-image-23286\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Uchiko is a quaint old town which was once the centre of Japanese wax manufacturing. The wax was made from sumac tree berries using heavy wooden presses until the invention of paraffin wax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-443.jpeg\" alt=\"Yokaichi Old Town\" class=\"wp-image-23287\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-450.jpeg\" alt=\"Japanese umbrellas\" class=\"wp-image-23294\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-444.jpeg\" alt=\"Yokaichi Old Town\" class=\"wp-image-23288\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A street of around 90 merchant houses with cream-coloured plaster walls and wooden fronts have been preserved which makes for an enjoyable detour from the main trail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-446.jpeg\" alt=\"Residence in Uchiko\" class=\"wp-image-23290\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-452.jpeg\" alt=\"Kamihaga Residence\" class=\"wp-image-23296\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a couple of museums and a theatre you can visit but I contented myself with wandering around the streets and photographing the traditional shop fronts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-453.jpeg\" alt=\"Uchiko Old Town\" class=\"wp-image-23297\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-436.jpeg\" alt=\"Uchiko shopfront\" class=\"wp-image-23280\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-437.jpeg\" alt=\"Bamboo wattle and daub\" class=\"wp-image-23281\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the shops are now closed and in a state of disrepair. It was interesting to see the bamboo wattle and daub construction peeking through the cracks in the plaster walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-456.jpeg\" alt=\"Chicken Katsu\" class=\"wp-image-23300\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Since I knew there would be no restaurants or conbini&#8217;s further ahead today, I decided to loop back into the town centre and have an early lunch at 11 am. I had tasty chicken katsu followed by a matcha ice cream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-457.jpeg\" alt=\"Oda River\" class=\"wp-image-23301\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The rest of the trail today followed route 379 along the winding Oda river, occasionally diverting through sleepy rural villages. The concrete was a bit tough on the feet but the scenery was nice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-458.jpeg\" alt=\"Oda River Bamboo\" class=\"wp-image-23302\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Along the way, I overtook a group of three henro retirees who were friends that all used to work for the same company. They were doing the pilgrimage in week long sections, returning home in between each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-460.jpeg\" alt=\"Hut in \u014cse\" class=\"wp-image-23304\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-461.jpeg\" alt=\"Wooden carvings in \u014cse\" class=\"wp-image-23305\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-462.jpeg\" alt=\"Building near \u014cse\" class=\"wp-image-23306\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the way into \u014cse is a rest hut, with a huge deck that might be suitable for sleeping on. There is an identical one five minutes further on in a more secluded spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-463.jpeg\" alt=\"Village beside Rakusui Daishi\" class=\"wp-image-23307\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-465.jpeg\" alt=\"Old shop in Tsukiawase\" class=\"wp-image-23309\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Rounding a sharp bend in the river at Rakusui Daishi, a beautiful village on the river bank came into view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-466.jpeg\" alt=\"Uchiko hut (38)\" class=\"wp-image-23310\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A short distance later, at the end of the Yoshinogawa Tunnel bypass, I arrived at Uchiko hut (38) which is where I&#8217;m camping tonight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/randomwire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-467.jpeg\" alt=\"Outdoor shower\" class=\"wp-image-23311\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as ample room, it has both a toilet and an outdoor shower making it probably the best hut I&#8217;ve come across so far. A short distance along the road is a group of vending machines where you get drinks too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a refreshing cold shower, I put up my tent and had a <em>healthy<\/em> dinner of ham sandwiches, beef jerky, Pringles crisps and a chocolate bar.
