It is a very sad state of affairs when I totally forget to announce a book release on LJ. I miss LJ. I read every day, but my feed keeps getting smaller and smaller. Maybe one day there will be an LJ revival. I'll bring the cheese plate.

Anyway! My lovely and talented BFF and co-author, Chris Owen, and I have our new book out! This is actually something we've been working on for the better part of eight years, but it finally came to fruition this month. See behind the cut for all the deets.

Firefighters Chancellor Shanahan and Tucker McBride have been together for years. They've been through the rough patches and come out the other side, although shift work, misunderstandings, and stubborn personalities can make things interesting. Chance knows that he and Tucker love each other, however, and neither of them have any interest in other people. So what happens when they meet another couple with a similar relationship? An unlikely friendship could take a possible turn.

Jake and Tor are a pair of cowboys who have weathered the storms of a decade together and have finally settled into their lives. They have a ranch, they have family, and they have each other. A rare vacation leads to a friendship, which leads to questions and a revival of long finished conversations. Is moving forward also a step back in time to issues they’ve already put to rest?

Available at Torquere Press
Available at Amazon

And hey, if you're on Goodreads, please feel free to leave us an honest review there or at Amazon. Thank you!!

Guess what I have for your hump day? THAT'S RIGHT, HUMPING.

:D

Several years ago, I wrote a Chance and Tucker story for an anthology that is no longer available. Torquere offered to put it out as a stand-alone, so I'm really happy about that! I like this story a lot since it gets into some of the nitty-gritty of their relationship. And they have sex, too. Natch. But mostly it's an emotional ride. I miss my firemen.

You can purchase Flesh and Blood HERE for the bargain price of only $3.99. Plus, the rest of my catalogue is 20% off. Yay!

Go, read, enjoy. Blurb under the cut.

They battled flames for nine hours, stopping only briefly to gulp bottles of water or wolf down the sandwiches that magically appeared from some of the neighboring restaurants. Chance was drenched in sweat inside his turnouts before noon and wished desperately for a dry t-shirt, but there was no time to change before he found himself back on the roof, holding a hose line.

The only truly frightening part of the day occurred when the captain at Station Four got caught under one of the falling rafters inside a building. Chance hadn’t been anywhere near the incident at the time; he’d been in the cab of his engine, on the radio with Station Two’s engineer. There had been shouts and the sound of running feet and Chance looked up in time to see the captain being carried out and loaded into the back of a medic van.

The guy had been brought not to one of their local hospitals, but one that was farther away because of their excellent burn unit, and all the men on scene had grown quiet when they’d found out. Being transported to a burn unit only meant one thing: pain.

It was nearing six o’clock before one of the chiefs finally dismissed Chance’s engine. Two other companies stayed to assess damage and cool hotspots, but Chance’s crew climbed wearily onto their rig and rolled out. They discussed the fire on their short trip back to the station, and Chance complimented all of them on doing what they'd been trained to do.

C shift greeted them when they returned, grumbling about how they’d missed the call by only twenty minutes. Chance was just considering grabbing a fast shower before heading home to Tucker when Jim nudged him.

“Your boy’s here.”

His head whipped around, shower forgotten. It had been dark when they’d pulled in; he must have missed Tucker’s truck in the lot. “Where?”

“Your office.”

Chance headed down the hallway to the small office he shared with the other two captains, eager to see Tucker and tell him about their day. The adrenaline still flowed through him and he realized he was hard inside his shorts, same as he’d been since they’d arrived on scene that morning. Fire had that effect on him.

Tucker sat in Chance’s chair behind the desk, his expression serious. He rose when Chance stopped in the doorway and came around the desk to stand in front of him, studying Chance’s face. “You didn’t call.”

Chance raised a brow. “You think I had time to call?”

“You could’ve,” Tucker insisted, a furrow appearing on his forehead. “You always have your cell. You coulda called when you stopped to eat.”

Chance stared at him. This wasn’t typical; Tucker knew better than anyone what it was like when things were too busy to even take a piss, much less find time to call home. “Didn’t C shift tell you where we were?”

Tucker studied his fingernails. “I called. They said – they said a captain went down and they didn’t know who. Called both hospitals and they wouldn’t tell me.”

Oh. Chance had nearly forgotten. “It was Sheridan. Not me.”

“Well, I didn’t fuckin’ know, now did I.”

Chance reached out a hand and curved it briefly around Tucker’s jaw. “It wasn’t me,” he said again. “I wasn’t even in the building.”

Tucker leaned into the touch briefly before pulling away. “Yeah. I got that. M’outta here, I’ll see you at home.” He pushed past Chance and took off down the hall, heading toward the back door and the parking lot.

Flesh and Blood

Okay! So apparently people are of the opinion that you can still have an online presence just by commenting, even without posting too much. THAT IS GOOD I AM GLAD YOU FEEL THAT WAY, FLIST. Thanks to all who weighed in!

In even more mundane news, it's February. This is the time of year I always look down at myself and think, "Bleh." Pale winter skin, that little bit of extra flab, the total lack of interest in shaving my legs more than once a week. Dear seasons: be summer, always.

new book!

RELEASE DAY! (Well, tomorrow. Wednesday. But the link is up.)

Sparks: A Tinder Story is available from Torquere Press! If you've been following the story of Chris and Morgan in Tinder and Embers, now's your chance to hear Morgan's side of the story. Living with a fireman is not as glamorous as the movies make it out to be.

Chris handled his own bike skillfully and safely, two things on which Morgan insisted. Neither of them had ever had an accident. There was a speeding ticket or two in their past, but police officers had let them go with a warning more often than they were actually ticketed.

After an hour and a half, Morgan spoke to Chris through the Bluetooth headsets in their helmets. “Turn off on Honey Springs.”

Chris gave him a thumbs up in response and made the tight right turn onto the scenic road. It was a bit hilly at first, then smoothed out and Morgan found what he was looking for. “Pull off,” he said to Chris, who acknowledged Morgan by stopping on the wide shoulder of the road.

Morgan stopped too and pulled off his helmet. Despite the cool weather, his forehead was sticky with sweat and the light breeze felt good. “Back here,” he told Chris. They hadn’t been out this way in some time, but Morgan was pretty sure there was a small dirt area just beyond the oleander bush up ahead.

They pushed the bikes another few feet and came upon the open space that was concealed from the main road. Morgan and Chris hit their kickstands and parked the bikes, then both of them unzipped their jackets and let the wind cool them down.

“I forgot this was here,” Chris said thoughtfully. He put his hands on his hips and turned in a slow circle. “Isn’t there a…” The sentence trailed off and Chris arched a brow at Morgan.

Morgan grinned and started down a barely-there path that led into the high grasses. He knew Chris was referring to the long-forgotten picnic table that sat abandoned in a little clearing.

There it was, just around the curve of the giant palm. They’d stopped to eat lunch here once, but that had been several years ago and Morgan had almost forgotten it. The old, peeling table was still here.

“Remember?” Morgan asked. Chris had come up behind him and Morgan could feel Chris’ breath warm in his ear.

“I remember.” Christopher slid his backpack off one shoulder and placed it on the bench. “But we didn’t bring lunch.”

“That’s not why we stopped.”

Chris approached Morgan from the front. His eyes twinkled and he shrugged out of his jacket, then helped Morgan to do the same. “I know.”

Their motorcycle jackets were not exactly as soft as a blanket, and there was the hard elbow padding to deal with, but they were better under Morgan’s back than the splintery wood of the table. And with Chris on top of him, Morgan didn’t care what was under him, really.

You can purchase Sparks HERE. Just in time for hump day, ha.

Sundays are so delicious when you know you don't have to work tomorrow. I have plenty of paperwork to keep me busy, but not having to set the alarm tonight more than makes up for it.

For anyone who didn't know, I blog a couple of Sundays a month over at Slash and Burn. Today was my Sunday, and usually I just ramble for a paragraph or two about nothing. But go and read and check out posts from my fellow authors, too. Enjoy your holiday if you have one, guys.

Now all that was left 'neath the bad-smelling sky
was my big empty factory...

the Lorax...

and I.

The Lorax said nothing. Just gave me a glance...
just gave me a very sad, sad backward glance...
as he lifted himself by the seat of his pants.
And I'll never forget the grim look on his face
when he heisted himself and took leave of this place,
through a hole in the smog without leaving a trace.
And all that the Lorax left here in this mess
was a small pile of rocks, with one word...

UNLESS

Happy birthday, Dr. Seuss. Plz let the record state that The Lorax has been my fave Dr. Seuss story for many years, long long long before they decided to make that horrible looking movie.

I panicked.

Up until a couple of months ago, I'd been going to the same nail salon for over 15 years. The same girls have been doing my fingers and toes forever. Sweet, Vietnamese ladies who are just about my age and we talk about their kids, they know I'm a teacher, I helped out one of them with a credit card issue they were having, blah blee. The salon wasn't anything special and actually didn't keep very up to date on the latest nail techniques because they're smack in the middle of a big senior retirement community and they don't actually need to keep that up to date. Show me a senior citizen who wants a shattered manicure. (Or pedicure, like I currently have.)

So they've been giving me a gel manicure for a while, and the first time it stayed on fine. The second time, it peeled off my nails after a week. The third time, four days. I finally said something about it and my manicurist promised to do a better one. Nope, it peeled in less than a week. At $40 a manicure, I want my nail polish to last, dude. My mom recommended a place she likes, so I gave it a try. It's comparable in price, MUCH closer to my house, and my polish didn't budge from my fingers for a full two weeks. Hooray! I switched over and haven't looked back.

Except my old nail place LOOKED UP MY PHONE NUMBER IN THE PHONE BOOK and called me last night, wanting to know where I was. I've never given them my phone number since they don't ever call to confirm appointments or anything. There was no reason for them to have my number. BUT THEY FOUND IT.

I panicked and lied and said I'd moved. And said I'd try to come in once in a while, even though they aren't close to my new house. Because I am too nice to say "You aren't giving me what I'm paying for and I really like you as people but not as nail technicians." My husband says they're a business and they need to know. I say a white lie never hurt anyone.

BUSTED.

Ink

Yummmmm, I have a new short story out. I love this one, because it's boys with tattoos. So delicious.

Ink

Cade Tomlin wants nothing more than to tattoo people. He’s been drawing on himself with markers since he was little, but it can’t compare to the feel of a tattoo machine in his hand. When he finally discovers an artist who is willing to take him on as an apprentice, Cade learns more secrets and details about tattooing than he thought existed. However, his first real client, Kip Parker, teaches him much more about what a meaningful tattoo can say.

It was a beautiful picture. It would be tricky and challenging and Cade wasn’t sure if he had the ability to do true justice to it, especially his first time, but the artist in him simply could not turn down the opportunity. Cade knew that this needed to be his first real tattoo. “Where do you want it?” he asked. Maybe it was somewhere innocuous, like on Kip’s forearm.

“On my chest. The opposite side of the one I got last time.”

His chest. That meant Kip would have to take his shirt off and sit there, and Cade would have to touch him. The thought was terrifying and exhilarating.

“All right,” Cade finally said, looking up at Kip. “Have a seat on the couch behind you and give me twenty minutes to draw it up.”

“Thanks.” Kip nodded. “I’m sure you’ll do it justice.” He sat on the leather couch and smiled confidently at Cade.

Cade felt something stirring, but he was unsure if it was something complicated like gratitude for Kip’s trust, or something simple like pure lust. He decided it was both, and neither feeling had any place in the job he was about to do. He needed to concentrate.

Nearly a half hour later, Cade had a decent replica of Kip’s picture. He’d shown it to Graham for approval.

“Looks good, Cade. Look at it like a grid, not as a picture. You’ll be fine.” Graham smiled and went back to texting Jessica. Cade felt a tiny frisson of fear that Graham didn’t seem interested in sitting over Cade’s shoulder to watch him work, but that fear was soon outweighed by relief. One thing Cade didn’t need was the extra pressure.

Cade called Kip over and pointed to the chair that all of Graham’s clients sat in. “Go ahead and take your shirt off,” Cade said, and was pleased to hear that his voice sounded normal. Kip was even more attractive at close range, and Cade sent up a silent prayer that his body wouldn’t betray him. His dick was already twitching.

Kip did as he was asked and Cade’s mind registered that the man must have been in the sun at some point. Kip’s chest was a smooth brown color with a dusting of golden hair.

Uh oh. That meant Cade would have to shave him.

Ink available HERE from Torquere Press.

And I can't even ask if anyone else has this issue, BECAUSE YOU WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO COMMENT AND TELL ME.

I still love you, LJ.
new book!

New release this week! It's a short story for the bargain price of $2.99. A few years ago I wrote Keeping Karma, a novel about a vet tech and an animal control officer. Alex can hear the thoughts of animals, and none so clearly as his ferret Karma. Well, Alex, Dylan, and Karma are all back in Teaching Topaz! This is a sequel to Keeping Karma and revisits Alex and Dylan in their life together. Excerpt under the cut.

He made it home before Dylan’s shift ended, so Alex pulled out a jar of homemade pasta sauce and started water on the stove to boil. They took turns cooking, although Dylan’s meals tended to be slightly more gourmet than Alex’s. While the water heated, he went to check on Karma.

She was asleep in one of her hammocks, but as soon as Alex unclipped the latches on the cage door, she poked her little white head over the side.

Play.

“You haven’t changed,” Alex laughed. “Come on out. You can roam the house for a while.”

He wouldn’t have let her do it while Macavity was still alive, though Karma escaped with alarming frequency anyway. Now there was more freedom for her to slink around under the furniture and steal the drink coasters on the coffee table.

Karma stretched her long body out until she was dangling from the hammock, then she yawned again and just hung there, half-in and half-out. “Fine, take your time,” Alex informed her. He left the cage door open and went back to the kitchen. She’d shimmy down the ramp to the floor of the room.

Sure enough, before too long Alex caught a glimpse of her sniffing along the edge of the kitchen cabinets.

Food. Food. Play.

“You have a full food dish. I saw it.” Still, he reached into the cupboard for the box of raisins and dropped two on the floor. She sniffed her way to them and then stuffed both into her mouth at the same time.

Eat. Karma treat eat eat.

Alex had to admit that he was fond of the primitive way animals communicated their thoughts. No hidden agendas, no secrets. Animals had base urges and simple needs, mostly centering around food, playtime, and companionship. It was a refreshing change from the human race.

He was pouring the pasta into the colander when he heard the front door open. A moment later, Dylan was pressing up against him from behind, one arm circling Alex’s waist and soft lips touching the nape of his neck.

Goose bumps rose on his arms and Alex grinned. “I do love a man in uniform.” He left the spaghetti in the sink to drain and turned in Dylan’s arms. “Hi.”

Dylan kissed him gently and touched his forehead to Alex’s. “Hi. I’m starving.”

“Me, too. Do you want meatballs with this?” Alex was a vegetarian, but he wasn’t above cooking Dylan some meat once in a while.

“No. Leave that for a minute.” Dylan tugged on Alex’s waistband and began walking backwards toward the short hallway that led to the bedrooms.

Teaching Topaz is available HERE, and I'll even give you a coupon code for 15% off!
So much to hate.

I'm an advertiser's dream. I laugh at funny commercials. I tear up at sad ones. I buy the stuff they're selling. I memorize lines and parrot them back when the ad comes on TV. I sing the jingles. I'm basically their target market, and I'm not ashamed of this fact.

BUT. When a commercial misses the boat with me, I am overcome with an irrational loathing of it.

<lj-embed id="37" />

WHAT ARE YOU EVEN SERIOUS FRESH STEP. As a lifelong cat owner, I can tell you exactly what will happen if a cat can't find its litter box. Your house smells like cat piss, that's what. Your cat doesn't care where it pees. If it sticks to its litter box, it's doing you a favor. There will be no bloodhound detectives ringing your doorbell.

<lj-embed id="38" />

I really, really, REALLY hate commercials and/or shows that emasculate men, otherwise known as the Stupid Man Syndrome. This woman acts like a huge ballbuster and all this ad does is make me hate her and also never want to use AT&T. I'm sure that's not what AT&T had in mind.

(Conversely, though, I sort of love the other AT&T one where the couple tries to pick their favorite child. http://youtu.be/u-cKpTMGd1g Go figure.)

<lj-embed id="39" />

UGH, GOD. Thank God the man is RIGHT THERE to protect her from that horrible thunder and lightning like she's a frightened dog. I HATE YOU, KAY JEWELERS.

<lj-embed id="40" />

Not only does this commercial make me not want to buy the car, it also makes me not want to be a mom. If you're saying out loud "We're the cool moms!" because you drive that fucking car, and then you all get in your Ford Flexes after you drop your offspring at school and go to Starbucks for your mocha frappucinos, I have news for you. YOU ARE NOT THE COOL MOMS. You have no street cred in that car. And your kids probably hate you.

This post brought to you by capslock and hormonal rage.
